Hi, everyone.
And welcome to The Mall.
Let’s Talk in English.
My name is Andrea.
And we have a new week of lessons just for all of you.
This week we are learning how to talk about relationships.
And this is something everyone needs to learn about.
We all have different relationships.
I also have something for you to find in today’s lesson.
Here is our FIND IT question.
Why didn’t Jason eat breakfast?
Why didn’t Jason eat breakfast?
Well, listen carefully.
Now let’s go to the Information Desk.
Hi, friends.
Welcome to the Information Desk.
(Chinese).
Let’s visit the tribal store now.
Hi, Jason.
How are you?
I’m hungry.
I can bring you some food.
What would you like?
Noodles, please.
I’ll go and get some for you.
Did you eat breakfast?
No.
Why didn’t you eat breakfast?
My aunt was not home.
She didn’t make breakfast for me.
Can’t you make your own breakfast?
I can’t cook.
Well, we just saw Jason and Emma.
They are in the tribal store at the mall.
Well, Emma comes into the store and asks Jason:
How are you?
Now what does Jason say?
Jason says:
I’m hungry.
I’m hungry.
Well, I think that all of us have said this before.
I’m hungry.
Now friends, when you are hungry, that means you want something to eat.
Your body is telling you that it needs food.
So you say:
I’m hungry.
Hungry is also a key word in this conversation.
Let’s use it in a sentence.
Simon was hungry.
So he went to a restaurant to get some food.
Now what do you do when you’re hungry?
Well, you try to find some food to eat.
Maybe you buy food or make food or cook food that you can eat.
Now why is Jason hungry?
Well, we find out that Jason didn’t eat breakfast.
He didn’t eat breakfast.
Now why didn’t he eat breakfast?
Well friends, that is the answer to our FIND IT question.
I’ll say the question again.
Why didn’t Jason eat breakfast?
Well, his aunt wasn’t home so she didn’t make breakfast for him.
Hmm.
I guess his aunt usually cooks breakfast for him.
He... She cooks breakfast for Jason.
Breakfast is a meal.
Breakfast is the first meal that you eat in a day.
And many people say that breakfast is the most important meal.
Maybe you wake up and you are hungry.
Then you can eat breakfast.
Well friends, now let’s review this key word together.
Please say it with me and also practice the key word sentence.
hungry.
hungry.
What’s your lunch?
I’m hungry.
Great job, everyone.
Well, let’s also find something else in this conversation to talk about.
We also find out that Jason can’t cook.
Now when you cook, that means you get food ready to eat.
Jason can’t cook.
I guess his aunt usually cooks for him.
Well, let’s keep learning.
And let’s join our friends at the tribal store again for Conversation B.
You don’t have to cook.
Eat cereal.
I don’t like cereal.
I don’t like cold food for breakfast.
Then make hot cereal.
I don’t know how.
I never cooked at home.
Did your mom do everything for you at home?
Yes.
She took good care of me.
When did you come to America?
Five months ago.
Well, we know that Jason can’t cook.
But Emma tries to help him.
She says:
You don’t have to cook.
Eat cereal.
Eat cereal.
If you are hungry, you can eat cereal.
Well friends, cereal is a key word.
Cereal is something that you eat.
Most people eat cereal for breakfast.
But you can eat cereal whenever you are hungry.
Now cereal is made of wheat and rice and other things.
There are many different kinds of cereal.
You could have cereal that is very sweet and has different colors in it.
Or you can also eat cereal that is very healthy.
Usually you put cereal in a bowl and then you add milk.
You eat cereal with a spoon.
Now I love to eat cereal.
I eat cereal every morning for breakfast.
You can eat cold cereal or you can eat hot cereal.
We find out in this conversation that Jason doesn’t like cold food for
breakfast.
So Emma says:
Then make hot cereal.
So you can have cold cereal or hot cereal.
Well, Jason also tells us that when he was at home, his mom did everything for
him.
She took good care of him.
Now when you take care of someone, you make sure that they have everthing they
need.
A mother takes care of her children.
She makes sure they have enough food to eat and everything that they need for
their day at school.
Who do you take care of?
Well, you can take care of a person, people or people in your family.
We also take care of other things.
If you have a pet, maybe you take care of an animal.
Or if you have plants in your house, you can take care of plants.
Maybe you water your plants every day to take care of them.
Well, Jason does not live at home anymore,
so now he has to learn how to take care of himself.
Maybe he will learn how to cook.
It’s nice that he have... has friends like Emma who can help him.
Well friends, now let’s review this key word together.
cereal.
cereal.
Many people eat cereal for breakfast.
What about you?
Do you eat cereal for breakfast?
Well friends, let us continue with Conversation C.
And you live with your aunt.
Yes.
When did your aunt come to America?
About twenty years ago.
Is she pretty Americanized now?
Yes, she is.
Then she expects you to do things on your own.
So she doesn’t help me at all.
She is helping you to be independent.
That’s a good thing.
It doesn’t feel good to me.
Well, Jason is learning how to be independent.
But he says that it doesn’t feel good right now.
Sometimes learning to be independent can be difficult,
but it is something that we need to learn.
And we also need to learn this key word.
It is...
independent.
Say it again.
independent.
Now when you are independent, that means you can do things on your own.
A baby is not independent.
A baby needs help, a mother and father and people to help the baby.
But as you grow up, you learn to be independent.
Jason does not live at home anymore.
So he is learning to be independent or he needs to learn to be independent.
How do you feel?
Are you independent?
Or do people still help you with many things?
Well, even when we are independent, when we grow up and do things on our own,
we still always need people to help us sometimes.
But learning to be independent is not always easy.
We find out in our conversation that Jason’s aunt expects him to do things on
his own.
She expects him to do things.
I’m sure that you expect to learn this key word.
It’s the verb:
expect.
expect.
Now when you expect something from another person, that means you think that
they will do something.
For example,
if you tell your mother that you will be home at five o’clock, well, then she
expects you to be home at five o’clock.
Now why did she expect that?
Because you told her.
A teacher expects her students to finish their homework.
That is something that a teacher expects you to do.
And friends, I expect you to practice these key words.
So why don’t we do it together.
And then you can also do it on your own.
The first one is... expect.
expect.
Don’t be late.
Tim expects you to be on time.
The next one is...
independent.
independent.
Janice is very independent.
She can do lots of things on her own.
Great job.
Now let’s take a break.
And then we will be right back.
