(Music).
Hi, everyone. And welcome to The Mall.
Let’s Talk in English.
My name is Andrea.
And this week we are learning how to talk about relationships.
Yesterday we learned about Jason’s life.
We learned that he is trying to be independent.
And that is not always easy.
We also learned a bit about his relationship with his aunt.
And today we will learn even more together.
So stay with us.
I have something for you to find.
Please listen for the answer to this question.
I know that you can find it.
What can Tom teach Jason?
What can Tom teach Jason?
Well, I know that Christina has many things to teach you.
So let’s go to the Information Desk.
Hi, friends.
Welcome to the Information Desk.
(Chinese).
I hope you will understand it better.
And now let’s watch.
Here are your noodles.
Thank you.
Jason, talk to your aunt.
Tell her your feelings.
I can’t.
Why not?
That’s not polite.
She is my aunt.
You can tell her your feelings and be polite.
That is very hard.
In this conversation, we see that Emma brought Jason some noodles.
We know that Jason is hungry.
So I’m sure that these noodles will help him.
Emma also tries to encourage Jason.
She says:
Talk to your aunt.
Tell her your feelings.
Now your feelings are how you feel about something.
Right now Jason is in a new place.
So I’m sure he has many interesting feelings that he is trying to understand.
So he can talk to his aunt about it.
But Jason isn’t sure about this.
He says:
That’s not polite.
She’s my aunt.
Well, I think that we are learning about different cultures here.
And Emma is trying to help Jason.
Now I want to try to help you understand this key word.
It is...
polite.
polite.
Now when you are polite, you say things in a nice way or you do things that are
nice.
For example, it’s always polite to tell people nice things.
It’s not always polite when you say things that are mean or bad to people.
For example,
if you are hungry and you would like something to eat, you shouldn’t just say:
I want food!
That’s not very polite.
Now how can you say that in a polite way?
Well, you can say:
I would like something to eat, please.
That is very polite.
Using words like ”please” and ”thank you” is polite.
And sometimes you talk to different people about different things.
Sometimes it’s not easy to talk to your family about things.
And Jason thinks that it’s not polite for him to talk to his aunt.
But Emma says:
You can tell her your feelings and be polite.
Jason says that that is very hard.
It can be hard to tell people your feelings or how you feel.
But you can do it in a polite way.
Well friends, this key word is not very hard.
I know that you can learn it.
It is...
hard.
hard.
Now if something is hard, that means it is not easy.
Kevin’s homework is hard.
He doesn’t know the answers.
Karen thinks it’s hard to learn a new language.
It’s not easy.
Well friends, learning English can be hard.
I know that.
But it can also be fun.
And sometimes we have to work harder to learn something when it’s not very easy.
Well, I think that we can review these key words.
Now that’s not hard.
You just say them with me and also practice the key word sentence.
The first one is...
polite.
polite.
Say thank you and be polite.
Thank you for saying that with me.
Now please practice the next key word with me.
I hope that I was polite.
The next one is not hard.
But the key word is the adjective:
hard.
hard.
This homework is hard.
I need help.
Well, it’s nice that Jason has friends to help him.
Let’s continue with Conversation B.
Hi, Emma.
Hi, Jason.
How are you?
Jason has a problem at home.
Really?
What’s wrong?
My aunt doesn’t take care of me.
Why is that a problem?
My mom doesn’t take care of me either.
Why not?
I don’t live at home.
I live in an apartment with a friend.
Do you cook and clean?
Yes! But not very well!
In this conversation, Tom comes into the tribal store.
Now Tom wants to help Jason with his problem,
but Tom doesn’t think it is a problem.
Tom says my mom doesn’t take care of me either.
Now why doesn’t Tom’s mom take care of him?
Well, we learned that Tom doesn’t live at home.
He lives in an apartment with a friend.
So Tom doesn’t live at home.
Well, here we see the word live and it is a key word.
When you live somewhere, that is the place that you call home.
You can live in an apartment.
You go home to that apartment when you are done school or done work.
So you can live in a place like I live in an apartment or I live in a house.
We also use this word to talk about the city or the country that we live in.
I used to live in Canada.
But I don’t live in Canada anymore.
Today I live in Taipei.
So when you asks someone this question, you can find out the place that they
live and the city or the country that they live in.
Well, Jason lives in a new place.
He lives with his aunt and he is learning many different things.
Now where does Tom live again?
Tom tells us that he lives in an apartment.
Now friends, apartment is also a key word.
And an apartment is a place where you live.
An apartment is usually a set of rooms that are together in one place.
Maybe you see an apartment building.
That is a building with many apartments inside.
Where do you live?
Do you live in an apartment or in a house?
Now let’s review our key words from this conversation.
The first one is...
live.
live.
Karen lives on First Street.
The next one is...
apartment.
apartment.
Nick lives in an apartment on the tenth floor.
Well done, everyone.
Well, let’s continue with Conversation C.
Jason, Tom can teach you.
Then you can be independent!
Can you cook eggs?
Sure!
Can you teach me?
Of course!
But talk to your aunt.
She can understand.
She can help too.
All right.
But Tom can tell me first.
Then I can cook my own breakfast!
Well, Tom doesn’t live at home anymore.
So he has learned to be independent.
He has learned how to cook and clean.
And now he is going to help Jason become more independent.
Now what does Jason want to learn?
Jason wants to learn how to cook eggs.
Can Tom cook eggs?
Yes, he can.
So Tom is going to teach Jason how to cook eggs.
And friends, in this conversation, we found the answer to our FIND IT question.
I’ll say the question again.
What can Tom teach Jason?
What can Tom teach Jason?
Tom can teach Jason how to cook eggs.
Now do you know how to cook eggs?
Well, maybe you can teach someone that too.
Now I hope to teach you the key word in this conversation.
Our key word is...
understand.
understand.
In our conversation, Emma says:
Talk to your aunt.
She can understand.
Now when you understand someone, in this conversation, we’re talking about
knowing how someone feels.
When you understand someone, you know how they are feeling,
you know that they are having a hard time with someone,
or you know that they need some help.
As a friend, we want to try and understand what our friends are going through.
Now we often use this verb ”understand” when you’re learning a new language.
Oh, I... I can’t understand.
Can you say it again?
But here we’re using the verb to talk about feelings like, I understand how you
feel.
I understand that you need help.
I understand that you’re going through a hard time.
And when we care for people, we want to try to understand how they feel.
Well friends, I do understand that it’s a good idea to practice our key words.
So let’s do that together.
understand.
understand.
Paula understands John’s problem.
She can help him.
Great job.
Now let’s take a break and then we will be right back.
