(Music).
Hi, everyone. Welcome to Friday right here on Let’s Talk in English on PTS and
the radio.
My name’s Andrea.
Everyone, my name is Billy.
And today we’re watching On the Go and we’re learning about rock climbing On the
Go.
Yes. Today we will see Campbell On the Go and he is going rock climbing.
Now have you ever been rock climbing, Billy?
Me? Well, I mean I’ve climbed a tree before, but I’ve never climbed a really big
rock wall.
Wow!
Now let’s learn our key words to help you with today’s On the Go.
Our first word is...
professional.
professional.
Thomas is a professional writer.
He writes really well.
Our next key word is...
climber.
climber.
The climbers climbed up the mountain.
equipment.
equipment.
To play baseball, you need a bat, a ball and other equipment.
require.
require.
My boss requires me to get my work done.
route.
route.
What is the fastest route to the hospital?
mountain.
mountain.
You’re going up the mountain?
Bring a coat.
It’s cold up there.
All right. Let’s say our key words one more time.
The first is...
professional.
professional.
climber.
climber.
equipment.
equipment.
require.
require.
route.
route.
mountain.
mountain.
Thanks for saying those with us.
Now let’s find out what our On the Go Mission is.
Hello, Eddy.
Eddy!
What’s this On the Go thing?
Well, it’s something fun and exciting and different.
Wow. So... so who goes On the Go?
Well, today it’s Campbell’s turn.
We’ll see him rock climbing.
Wooh!
OK.
All right. This is something new.
OK.
All right. Well, Today’s Mission.
It’s also new.
Today’s Mission.
How does Campbell get down from the top of the wall?
How does Campbell get down from the top of the wall?
Let’s find out On the Go!
Wow. Hi, everyone.
Are you ready for an adventure?
I hope so.
Welcome to the world of rock climbing.
Let’s go On the Go!
Indoor rock climbing is popular in places where climbing outdoors can be
difficult because of bad weather or locations.
Today, people can experience the world of rock climbing in the city or a gym.
Now you don’t have to be a professional climber to go indoor rock climbing.
It’s easy to learn.
Some kids are learning when they’re only four years old.
Now I’m not four, but I’m still young.
So I can give it a try too.
When climbing, you should wear comfortable clothes.
You want to move easily.
And you get to wear special rock wall shoes.
They’ll help you climb.
(Background Noise).
Welcome back, everyone.
Now let’s take a look at some of the key words you just saw in that On the Go
section.
Our first key word is...
professional.
professional.
Now a professional is someone who is very good at what they do.
A professional sports player gets paid for playing sports.
So Campbell is not a professional.
He’s not very good at what he’s doing.
But he’s learning how to climb walls.
And it’s exciting.
It is exciting.
If you’re professional at something, it’s usually your job.
Right.
So it’s not Campbell’s job to climb walls, but he is having fun.
And we’re having fun learning key words.
And Campbell is learning more about how to be a good climber.
Our next key word is...
climber.
A climber is someone who climbs up something.
A climber can go up a mountain.
Or a climber can go up a ladder.
Right. You can climb up something.
You can also climb down something.
Now climbing up and climbing down is not easy, so that’s why rock climbing is a
sport.
That’s right.
Rock climbing is an exciting sport, but it also takes a lot of hard work.
Now let’s learn more about this from Thomas.
(Chinese).
Hey!
All right.
I’ve got my special climbing shoes on.
(Background Noise).
I’m ready to climb.
Come on.
Hey, (Chinese), I’ve got my shoes on.
Can I go climbing now?
(Chinese).
Huh? More equipment?
Safety equipment is required for all climbers.
Besides climbing shoes, all climbers need to wear a special harness.
This harness is very important.
It attaches a climber to the ropes.
Now why are ropes important?
Well, first, the ropes are here to keep me safe.
These ropes will keep me from falling and hurting myself.
This is called belay.
(Chinese).
The ropes are also there to help me climb back down.
The process of descending or climbing down with the help of a rope is called
rappelling.
(Background Noise).
Hey, (Chinese).
Am I ready to climb now?
Oh, yeah.
I have to do some warm up stretches and exercises first.
(Background Noise).
Wow. So rock climbing does require a lot of different equipment.
Campbell didn’t know about that, but he’s finding out.
Yes. You need to wear special equipment to make sure that everything goes well
and that you are safe.
equipment.
equipment.
Now equipment is things you need to do something.
Now when you’re playing a sport, you need equipment.
Now let’s see, if you’re playing baseball, what kind of equipment would you
need?
Well, you would need a baseball bat.
That’s one kind of equipment.
And a ball.
That’s right.
You’d also need cleats, which are shoes.
You’d need a helmet.
These things are equipment.
Now let’s look at our next key word. It is...
require.
require.
Now something that is required is needed.
Now if you are going to the beach, a bathing suit is required.
Without a bathing suit, you can’t go swimming.
Well, that’s for sure.
If something’s required, it’s something you must do.
Students are required to wear uniforms to school.
Or students are required to take tests if you want to go on to the next grade.
And equipment is required when you want to go rock climbing.
All right. And now we require you to go learn some more from Thomas.
Wow.
(Chinese).
All right. I’m ready to go.
What do we do next?
(Chinese).
Oh.
Each route has a different color.
Each color is a grade or level of difficulty.
Green is for beginners and red is for professionals.
OK. Well, green is the easiest, so I think I’ll pick green since it’s my first
time.
Well, let’s see how this goes.
Climbing!
While climbing, a climber should take his time.
He should think carefully which hand and foot grip will get him closer to the
top.
Once on the top, it’s time to come down.
A climber will need to trust the staff member and his rope by leaning back.
The staff member will help you rappel back to the ground.
Whew!
That was a great experience.
It was a little scary looking down from the top.
But I made it.
I can climb a real rock wall now.
I can climb a mountain.
Hey. That wall looks like it’s a fun one to climb.
Let’s try it!
(Background Noise).
Thanks for joining me on this climb.
I hope you had fun.
See you next time On the Go!
Bye!
Whoa!
Whew!
Whoa! Well, that looks like a lot of fun.
It was great to see Campbell on top of the rock wall.
Wow. He was on top of the rock wall.
And it was... it was so big.
It looked like a big mountain.
And before he climbed it, he had to choose a route to take.
Now let’s learn our key word.
It is...
route.
route.
Now a route is the way you get from one place to another place.
You can choose a short route or a long route to get somewhere.
Let’s say you’re driving in your car and you’re taking a long trip.
Someone might ask you:
What route are you taking?
You can plan your route on the Internet.
Well, Campbell as a climber had to decide what route to take.
He had to choose what color.
Green, of course, is for beginners.
And red is for professionals.
So Billy, what color did he choose?
I’m... Did he choose green or red?
Because I’m thinking he should have taken the red route because that would be
very challenging.
Well, yes, but I think he is still a beginner.
Our next key word is...
mountain.
mountain.
A mountain is a very big hill.
Many places have beautiful mountains that you can look at or climb.
Right. It’s fun to climb a mountain.
And you know, sometimes when I climb mountains, I like to take a picnic with me
and eat lunch at the top.
All right.
We also found the answer to Today’s Mission in this segment.
The question is: How does Campbell get down from the top of the wall?
How does Campbell get down from the top of the wall?
He gets down by rappelling.
And we are going to learn more from Thomas.
(Background Noise).
(Chinese).
