Hey, everyone! Welcome to Let’s Talk in English Friday edition.
My name is Billy.
And my name is Andrea.
Now it’s Friday, so that means that we are On the Go.
Wooh! We are On the Go and having fun as we go shrimp fishing.
That’s right.
We’re going shrimping.
Now shrimping is a sport.
And it seems like it’s pretty fun.
And there are some good key words we can learn, so let’s start learning them
right now.
The first key word today is...
seafood.
seafood.
Austin loves seafood, especially fish.
shrimp.
shrimp.
Gabe doesn’t like shrimp.
He doesn’t like seafood.
live.
live.
Seeing live animals at a zoo is better than looking at animal pictures.
bait.
bait.
If you want to catch fish, you need to use good bait.
dish.
dish.
My mom made a big dinner with eight dishes.
fresh.
fresh.
This cake is fresh.
I just made it.
All right. Let’s say them together again.
Our first key word is...
seafood.
seafood.
shrimp.
shrimp.
live.
live.
bait.
bait.
dish.
dish.
fresh.
fresh.
All right.
Great job, everyone.
Now it’s time for us to go see Eddy, find out what Today’s Mission is.
Eddy, do you have it?
Yeah, yeah, but I don’t see food.
OK.
Eddy, Eddy, seafood is a type of food.
It doesn’t mean ”see” food.
It means uh, food that is in the wa... You know what, Eddy?
We just need Today’s Mission.
Uh, seafood.
Yeah.
OK. I see food. Ha. OK, OK.
You’re funny, Eddy.
All right. So Today’s Mission.
To go shrimping, what three things does a person need?
To go shrimping, what three things does a person need?
All right. Let’s watch our On the Go and we’ll find out.
Here we go.
Hey, let’s have seafood for lunch.
Do you know any good seafood restaurants?
Yes, I do.
Do you like to eat shrimp?
Mmm.
Shrimp!
I love shrimp!
Great.
Then we should go to (Chinese).
There are many great places to go shrimping.
Shrimping?
What’s that?
Shrimping is when people fish for shrimp.
Shrimp fishing - shrimping.
Oh, that sounds great.
Let’s go shrimping On the Go!
Visitors go shrimp fishing to experience the joy of catching live shrimp.
It’s a very popular activity for everyone - young and old.
Wow.
I’m excited to try this out.
Now where do we get our shrimping equipment?
Oh! Let’s go!
(Background Noise).
Hey, everyone!
We’re going shrimp fishing today.
Wow!
Was it fun to watch Daniel and Campbell start to learn about this fun and
exciting sport!
Well Billy, it’s great to see that you have your fishing pole.
You have your equipment, and you’re ready to get into shrimping.
I am ready.
I’ve got my equipment.
And we’ve also got some key words to learn.
Now our first key word is...
seafood.
seafood.
Seafood is food you eat.
The food comes from the sea or the ocean or a river - some body of water.
Seafood is delicious to eat.
You can cook seafood in many different ways.
Maybe you cook seafood at home or you can go to a seafood restaurant.
Now Andrea, tell us.
What is your favorite kind of seafood?
Mmm.
Ooh, well, my favorite kind of seafood is squid.
Ooh, squid.
Well, I like shrimp.
And hey! That’s our next key word.
shrimp.
shrimp.
Now shrimp is a type of seafood.
It’s something that you eat that comes from the water.
When you eat shrimp, you have to peel off its shell or skin.
Shrimp look like little animals that live in the water, usually in the ocean.
They have lots of legs and a hard shell.
So we’re going shrimping fishing today.
That means we’re going to a body of water.
It’s actually inside.
And we’re trying to get the shrimp out so we can eat them.
Mmm.
Yeah!
So we can say we’re going shrimp fishing.
Or another word is shrimping.
Shrimping is the name of the sport.
Our last key word in this conversation is...
live.
live.
Now something that is live is alive.
It’s still living.
So we’re trying to catch live shrimp - shrimp that are swimming around in the
water.
People say that seafood is always best if it’s live shortly before you cook it.
Right, because that’s when it tastes the freshest.
Mmm.
All right. Let’s go learn some more from Thomas.
(Chinese).
All right.
I’ve got a fishing pole and a hook.
Oh, wait. I think I’m forgetting something very important.
That’s right.
We need bait.
bait.
Like fishing, when you go shrimping, you also need to use bait.
The bait helps you catch the shrimp on your hook.
People usually use chicken liver as bait.
Well, I’ve got some bait on my hook.
Now I’ll try to catch something.
Catching shrimp can be tricky.
Beginners catch about three shrimp an hour while more experienced shrimpers can
catch about ten.
The record is one hundred shrimp in three hours.
Campbell!
Wow!
Take a look...
I hope we get more than one. I’m hungry.
(Background Noise).
Well, we just learned something that is very important.
When you go shrimping or shrimp fishing, you need to have good bait.
Well, you need to have bait at all.
And I don’t think Campbell had any at first.
But thank goodness, Daniel gave him some good bait.
Now what is bait?
Let’s learn our key word.
bait.
bait.
Bait is something that you use to catch fish or to catch shrimp - anything that
you want to catch when you’re using a fishing pole.
So when you catch something, you might need to use bait that the animal is
attracted to - something the animal wants to bite.
That’s right.
Something the animal likes and wants to eat.
You might use liver as bait.
At least that’s what Campbell and Daniel use.
Mmm.
Liver would not be good bait for me though.
I don’t like liver, so don’t use it if you’re trying to catch me.
OK, Billy.
Good to know.
Well friends, we also found the answer to Today’s Mission.
The question is: To go shrimping, what three things does a person need?
To go shrimping, a person needs a fishing pole, hook, and bait.
All right. Friends, do you have those three things?
Well, then you’re ready to go shrimp fishing.
Let’s learn more from Thomas.
(Chinese).
Check it out.
I caught five shrimp.
Wow!
I caught eight!
Oh! Great.
Great.
Uh, let’s go cook them. OK.
(Music).
Ten shrimp make a dish.
But the more the better.
If you want to eat more shrimp but don’t want to catch them, you can buy them
from the store.
Mmm.
Shrimp don’t get any fresher than this.
Ha, ha.
All that shrimping has made me hungry.
Let’s go eat!
(Music).
Mmm. My shrimp are delicious.
How are yours?
Mmm.
Well friends, I hope you had as much fun as I did shrimping today.
We’ll see you next time On the Go!
Hey! Who ate all my shrimp?
Daniel!
What?
Oh.
Oh, well, I guess I’ll have to go get some more.
See you later.
(Background Noise).
Wow. So Daniel caught five shrimp and Campbell caught eight.
Well, they caught a lot.
And now they can cook them and enjoy them.
Mmm.
That’s the one great thing about shrimping.
Yes, it takes a while to catch the shrimp.
But then you can enjoy them in a beautiful dish.
All right.
Now let’s learn our key words.
Our first is...
dish.
dish.
Now when you’re eating dinner or lunch or some meal, you’ll have different
dishes on the table.
Each dish is a food that you are eating, like shrimp.
So you might have a seafood dish and a vegetable dish, maybe a chicken dish.
All different kinds of food cooked in different ways.
Now the important thing is that you want fresh food cooked in different ways.
So let’s learn our next key word.
It is...
fresh.
fresh.
Something that is fresh is... is new.
A food that is fresh has just been cooked and it’s just been caught as well.
Well, the shrimp are definitely fresh.
We saw them catch them and cook them.
So they caught them and cooked them on the same day.
So the fish are very fresh.
Now fish are not fresh if you buy them in the store and they’ve been in the
store for maybe a week or even a month.
Well, then you shouldn’t eat them.
You should only eat fresh fish.
That’s very healthy.
All right.
Right now you should learn some more from Thomas.
Wow.
(Chinese).
