Hi, everyone. Welcome to Let’s Talk in English on PTS and the radio.
My name’s Andrea.
Hey, everyone.
My name is Billy.
And today we are once again On the Go.
Woo-hoo! We are On the Go!
And we are going river tracing.
Now friends...
Wow.
This is exciting.
It’s a sport where you are swimming and walking and hiking and doing all of
these things at the same time.
So let’s get ready to learn some key words.
Our first one is...
safety.
safety.
When you do something dangerous, safety is important.
The next key word is...
helmet.
helmet.
Put a helmet on your head when you ride a bike.
float.
float.
The boat floated on the water.
waterfall.
waterfall.
Look at all the water going over that waterfall!
All right.
Look at you.
You’re learning key words.
Let’s do them again.
Here we go.
The first one is...
safety.
safety.
helmet.
helmet.
float.
float.
waterfall.
waterfall.
Thank you, everyone. Now let’s go see Eddy to get Today’s Mission.
We’re... we’re going... we’re going to the waterfall?
Well, yes we are.
On the Go we’re going river tracing.
On the Go.
Waterfall.
Wow.
I want to go there soon.
OK, Eddy. Maybe someday...
Today’s Mission! Eddy! Today’s Mission!
Ah! OK, fine.
Today’s Mission.
What do you have to wear to go river tracing?
What do you have to wear to go river tracing?
Well friends, we have to go On the Go.
Hey, Billy!
What?
Check this out!
Go! Campbell! Go!
Hey, everyone! Welcome to Ilan.
Today, we’re going river tracing.
Let’s go...
On the Go!
(Background Noise).
River tracing is a popular outdoor activity that combines hiking, climbing and
sometimes swimming in a river.
Safety is important for any outdoor activity, and river tracing is no exception.
Here, Billy. Put on this helmet and life jacket.
OK. The life jacket will help me float in deep water.
Yeah. And the helmet will protect your head.
Ow!
The last thing we will need before going up the river are special shoes.
These shoes are made of rubber and are light enough to walk in the water.
All right, Billy, are you ready?
I’m ready!
Let’s go in.
One, two, three! Ah! Hahahaha! Campbell! Campbell!
Great job, Billy!
Wow.
River tracing looks like a real adventure.
When you’re river tracing, you are hiking, climbing and swimming in a river.
Wow. That is exciting.
And it must be a good challenge too, especially if the river is really strong
and pushing against you.
And that’s why you have to remember that safety is important.
Our key word is...
safety.
safety.
Now when you think about safety, you want to make sure that you are safe.
You don’t want to do things that are dangerous.
Keep safety in mind.
Right.
It’s always important to keep safety in mind when you’re doing something that
can be dangerous, like in-line skating or river tracing.
That’s why you wear the right protection.
And that’s why you want to wear a helmet.
Our key word is...
helmet.
helmet.
A helmet is like a hard hat that you wear on your head.
A helmet protects your head.
Now something else you also might want to wear for safety is a life jacket.
Now I’ve got a life jacket right here.
You want to put it on, make sure it fits well, and it will help you to float if
you start to drown.
And we’re going to help you learn that key word:
float.
float.
Now when you float on water, that means your body is close to the top of the
water.
When you float, you’re not really doing a lot with your body.
You’re just kind of sitting there and allowing the water to move you around.
Now you saw Campbell floating in this On the Go section.
You saw him laying down in the water and the life jacket was holding him up.
He was floating on the water and then down the water.
So having a helmet, wearing a life jacket.
All of these things are important for river tracing safety.
Let’s learn more from Thomas.
(Background Noise).
(Chinese).
(Music).
Hey, everyone.
This is Tom.
Hi.
Tom is our guide.
He’s going to lead us in some stretches before we head up the river.
Let’s go.
I hate it in the water.
I hate it in the water.
Hey! Come on, guys!
Let’s go!
Billy, where are you going?
We’re going up stream, not down stream.
Follow Tom!
River tracing is a great way to enjoy nature and to keep active outdoors.
On a good day, you can see many different animals.
Crabs, fish, frogs, and even snakes.
Snakes!
Did someone say snakes?
Campbell! Wait!
When river tracing, it is important to take your time and walk carefully in the
water.
Moving too fast is dangerous because you might slip.
Campbell, how much further?
Ha, ha! We still have a long way to go.
We’re going to a big waterfall.
(Chinese).
Wow. Well, this really is exciting, Andrea.
You were right.
River tracing is exciting, challenging and fun.
And it’s neat to see people helping each other.
That’s right.
River tracing is a team activity.
You have to work together with others to make it a good experience.
Now we know we’ve got Campbell there, and then I’m there.
But we’ve got another person too.
His name is Tom, and he was kind enough to help us.
That’s right.
Tom is your guide.
And he helps you move up stream to the waterfall.
Ooh, the waterfall.
Let’s learn that key word.
waterfall.
waterfall.
Now a waterfall is a place in a river where the water goes straight down.
Now usually in a river, the water just kind of going along.
But then if there is a place where the water goes straight down for kind of a
long way, that is called a waterfall.
Now a waterfall is something beautiful to look at.
It’s fun to watch the water fall down over the falls.
Now I’m from Canada.
And in Canada, we have a beautiful waterfall called Niagara Falls.
Oh, I’ve never heard of Niagara Falls.
Where is that?
Well, it’s in a city that’s called Niagara Falls.
Niagara Falls are beautiful and they’re falls that are shared by Canada and the
U.S.
Andrea, I was just kidding you.
I’ve heard of Niagara Falls.
They are huge, aren’t they?
They’re so big and you see the water coming down.
And then what do you see coming up?
Some mist or steam?
Yeah. It looks kind of like steam or mist.
It’s fun to look at the falls and also kind of get a little shower.
All right. It’s also fun to answer the question in Today’s Mission.
The question is: What do you have to wear to go river tracing?
What do you have to wear to go river tracing?
Well, you have to wear a wetsuit, special shoes, a helmet and a lifejacket.
All right. If you wear all those things, you can go river tracing.
Right now you can learn some more from Thomas.
(Background Noise).
(Chinese).
(Music).
River tracing is a lot of fun, and it’s a great way to learn how to be a good
team.
But in some places the current is really strong.
So you have to help each other.
Right. But you need to help each other in a special way.
You can’t just hold hands.
You need to hold each other’s wrists.
Let’s go, Billy.
All right. Gotta go.
(Music).
Hey, Billy, look!
We’re here. There’s a waterfall.
Yeah! High five!
Wooh!
All right!
So we can go home, right?
Uh, no. We have one more thing to do.
What?
We gotta jump from the top of the waterfall!
All right, Billy.
While we jump, you have to make sure the water is deep enough.
OK.
Hey, Tom. How does the water look? OK!
Go! Go! Go! Go! Go!
Are you ready, Billy?
I’m ready! OK! Bye, everyone!
See you next time...
On the Go!
(Music).
Wow. Now Billy, tell us.
What it was like to jump off the waterfall?
OK. Now when you’re... when you’re looking at it, you know, on the On the Go
thing, it doesn’t look like the waterfall is that high up there.
But yes, it is a pretty big waterfall.
And right before we jump, I admit there was a little nervousness.
I was a little scared.
I wasn’t sure if I was going to do it.
But I did it three times.
Wow.
And how did you feel after you jumped and you came up out of the water again?
I felt like a new man.
I felt different inside.
I felt like I had just jumped off the waterfall and it was so exciting.
Fantastic, Billy.
Thank you for sharing that.
Now we also find out some other important things in river tracing.
It is a team sport.
You have to work together with others.
We also find out that you have to help your partners.
But you don’t hold the other person’s hand.
Billy, what do you hold?
You don’t hold the hand. You hold the wrist just like this.
It’s a stronger grip.
Now your wrist W-R-I-S-T is, of course, the part between your arm and your hand.
Right here. Look, you can put your fingers around your wrist.
Well friends, we have more to learn.
So let’s go see Thomas.
(Background Noise).
(Chinese).
