(Music).
Hey, everyone. Welcome to Let’s Talk in English on PTS and the radio.
My name is Billy.
And my name is Andrea.
Welcome, everyone.
Today, we are going on a bike ride.
Oh, that sounds like fun.
You know, it’s good to get outside, enjoying nature and take a bike ride.
It’s also good to learn English, so let’s start right now with our key words.
The first is...
ride.
ride.
I like to take a ride on my bicycle when it’s warm outside.
outdoors.
outdoors.
We shouldn’t be inside.
The weather is nice.
We should go outdoors!
explore.
explore.
Let’s go to Europe.
I want to explore all the countries there.
tire.
tire.
A car has four tires.
They are black.
bell.
bell.
That’s the bell!
It’s time for the next class.
scenery.
scenery.
Look at the scenery.
It is beautiful!
Now friends, let’s look at these key words again by saying them together.
Our first one is...
ride.
ride.
outdoors.
outdoors.
explore.
explore.
tire.
tire.
bell.
bell.
scenery.
scenery.
All right.
Great job, everyone.
Now it’s time to go see Eddy.
Eddy, what do you have for us today?
Uh... well, it’s uh... it’s Friday, right?
That’s right.
OK. All right. That means it’s... it’s On the Go!
It’s On the Go!
Wooh!
But Eddy, day every! It doesn’t matter if it’s Friday. Every day you give us
Today’s Mission.
OK. All right. All right.
So Today’s Mission is... oh, yes! Today’s Mission.
How do Daniel and Steve get back home?
How do Daniel and Steve get back home?
Hmm.
Well, let’s find out as we go On the Go!
Hey, everyone.
My name is Daniel.
And this is my friend Steve.
And today, we’re going to go on a bike ride.
So let’s hit the road On the Go!
Bike riding is a great way to exercise and enjoy the outdoors.
Today I’m riding my bike or bicycle along one of the rivers of Taipei.
Riding here is easy because there are many paths made for bikes.
So Steve, what do you like about bike rides?
Well, I think it’s a fun and healthy way to explore Taipei.
And it’s cheap.
I don’t have to pay for gas.
That’s true.
Bike riding is very popular around the world.
From the United States to Europe and Asia, people love riding bikes.
Every weekend you will see many different kinds of bike riders, from
professional athletes to families with children.
Hey, everyone.
Well, this is exciting.
Steve and Daniel are going on a bike ride.
Now of course, that’s fun, but it’s also healthy for you.
It is.
Going on a bike ride is a great way to explore the outdoors.
Now we have three key words in this section, so let’s go ahead and start
learning them.
The first key word today is...
ride.
ride.
Now when you ride something, you sit on it or stand on it and it takes you
somewhere.
You can ride a bicycle.
You can also ride a bus or you can ride a horse.
So you ride something that is moving.
When you ride it, it takes you to a place.
That’s right.
So they’re going on a bicycle ride or a bike ride.
That’s the title of our On the Go.
A Bike Ride.
And where are they going?
Well, they are going on a bike ride in the great outdoors.
The great outdoors.
All right.
Let’s look at that key word.
outdoors.
outdoors.
Now if something is outdoors, it’s outside.
Right now are we outdoors, Andrea?
No, Billy, we are not outdoors.
We are indoors.
When you are outdoors, you are outside in the fresh air with the sunshine.
That’s right.
When you’re outdoors, you can go exploring; you can explore nature.
You can see mountains and trees and rivers.
And where are Steve and Daniel?
They’re in a park.
Yes. And they are exploring with their bicycles.
Now what does it mean to explore?
Let’s look at our last key word.
explore.
explore.
Now when you explore something, you look around and learn more about it.
You can explore a new area.
If you’re traveling to a new city, you can explore all around to learn about it.
All right.
Now let’s go learn some more from Thomas.
(Background Noise).
(Chinese).
(Music).
I’m going down the steps.
Steve, what are you doing?
Stay on the bike path.
Uh-oh.
This is not good.
My front tire is flat.
How did that happen?
A flat tire is a big problem for bike riders.
Without air inside the tire, the wheel will break.
And a bike without two good wheels, it’s not going to take you anywhere.
So having an air pump with you is important.
Here.
I always bring an air pump just in case.
Good thinking.
There. I’d better check the back tire just in case.
You should take good care of a bike just like a car or scooter.
While checking your bike, look at the brakes.
Most bikes have front and back brakes.
The flectors and even your bell should also work at all times.
All right, Daniel.
I think I’m ready to keep going.
Good, good.
Lead the way.
(Music).
Well, going on a bike ride looks like a lot of fun, but you do have to be
careful, right, Billy?
That’s right.
And Steve, you should stay on the bike path.
Steve is riding his bike down the stairs.
And what happens?
Well, he gets a flat tire.
Let’s learn our key word together.
It is...
tire.
tire.
Now a tire is part of a wheel.
Your bicycle tire is what keeps the bike on the road.
And if you don’t have air in your tire, then your tire is flat.
It doesn’t have enough air.
It’s not big enough to be able to ride on.
And what happens if you have a flat tire?
Well, you can’t ride your bicycle anymore.
You have to put air in the tire with an air pump to pump it up again.
That’s right.
Now there are other things on a bike.
There are bells on bikes so you can warn people that you’re coming.
You can warn them.
You can let them know you’re right behind them.
And bell is a key word.
Let’s learn it.
bell.
bell.
A bell is something that you ring.
A bell usually tells you something.
For example, if you’re at school and you hear the school bell, ding ding ding
ding ding, you might know that it’s time for class.
Or if you’re at home and you hear the doorbell, you know someone has come over
to visit.
Go to your door, open it and find out who.
And if you’re riding your bike and you hear a bell, that might mean that there’s
a bike behind you.
So keep listening as you’re riding.
That’s right.
All right.
Now let’s listen some more to Thomas.
(Background Noise).
(Chinese).
So Steve, where are we right now?
Well Daniel, right now we’re riding along the Danshuei River, which runs right
into the ocean.
Wow.
Steve and I are going to Bali, which is across the river from Danshuei.
Bali is known for its beautiful riverside scenery and for its architecture
museum.
That is where our bike trail ends.
Steve, are we there yet?
I’m getting so tired.
Well, the good news is, Daniel, yes.
We finally made it to the end.
Really?
We are in Bali?
Yep.
We have finished the bike tip?
Well, I wouldn’t say ”finished”.
Remember, we still have to bike back home.
Oh, no, no.
Don’t worry.
We can take the MRT!
Really?
Well, thanks, everyone, for joining us today on our bike trip.
And maybe we’ll see you on the path too someday.
See you next time On the Go!
(Music).
So Daniel and Steve are taking a bike ride along the Danshuei River, and they’re
going to Bali.
Now Andrea, have you been to Bali before?
Is it a nice place?
Yes, Billy, I have been to Bali and it is a great place.
The scenery is beautiful.
Hey! And you just said a key word.
scenery.
scenery.
Now scenery is something you look at and you think it’s beautiful.
What a nice picture or scenery.
When you are in the outdoors, you can see beautiful scenery.
Maybe there are trees and water, a river or a lake.
All of these things are part of the scenery.
So Steve and Daniel go to Bali.
There’s beautiful scenery there.
But how do they get back?
We know they take a bike ride there, but they’re probably pretty tired.
Well, let’s look at Today’s Mission for that answer.
The question is: How do Daniel and Steve get back home?
How do Daniel and Steve get back home?
Well, they take the MRT.
The MRT.
And that is the subway in Taipei.
It’s very convenient.
It is.
Especially after a long bike ride, I can understand why they’re tired.
So now they can just relax on the MRT.
Well, if Steve and Daniel had so much fun, Andrea, maybe we should do this too.
Yeah, Billy, we should take a bike ride.
But right now we should learn some more from Thomas.
(Background Noise).
Hey. So they are riding along the Danshuei River.
(Chinese).
