(Music).
Hey, everyone.
Welcome to Let’s Talk in English on PTS and the radio.
My name is Billy.
And I’m Andrea.
Today is Friday, so that means that we are On the Go.
On the Go. We’re going kayaking and camping today.
And we’re going to start by looking at our key words.
The first key word today is...
kayak.
kayak.
Vicky likes to kayak.
She likes being on the water.
Our next key word is...
island.
island.
Japan is an island country.
The next key word is...
kayak.
It’s the noun.
kayak.
Christopher fell out of this kayak and got all wet.
rest.
rest.
I’m tired.
I need to rest.
tent.
tent.
Jeff and Jerry went camping last weekend and slept in a tent.
Now let’s review these key words together again.
The first one is a verb.
It is...
kayak.
kayak.
island.
island.
Now we have the noun:
kayak.
kayak.
rest.
rest.
tent.
tent.
All right.
Great job, everyone.
Now let’s go see Eddy.
Yeah, yeah.
Hi.
Are we going camping with Campbell?
That’s right.
Camping with Campbell, Eddy.
That’s funny.
Camping and Campbell.
Yeah, that is funny.
Eddy, you’re funny guy.
OK. So Today’s Mission, right?
Yes.
OK.
Today’s Mission is: What can Campbell use to help him find out where to go?
What can Campbell use to help him find out where to go?
I’m sure we’ll find out as we watch this On the Go.
(Music).
Hi, everyone.
For today’s On the Go, we’re going camping on the beach.
I am so excited.
My friend told me that the camping here in Penghu is great!
But where is my friend?
Hi, Campbell!
Hi!
Are you ready to go?
Sure!
Wait! Go where?
I thought we’re gonna camp here on the beach.
Yes, we are camping, but not here.
You will take a kayak to visit a couple of small islands of Penghu first.
Then we can decide which islands to camp on.
Whoa!
We’re going kayaking!
Yes.
That sounds like so much fun!
Let’s go On the Go!
(Music).
All right.
So we see Campbell on the beach.
He’s about to go kayaking and then he’s going to camp overnight.
Yes! He’s going to camp on an island.
Wow. This is a great adventure for Campbell.
And this is a great chance for us to learn some key words about kayaking.
Our first one is...
kayak.
kayak.
Now when you go kayaking, you get in a special kind of boat on the water.
It’s fun to kayak.
Kayaking is a sport.
That’s right.
When you go kayaking, you are in a special boat on the water.
And of course when you are kayaking, you need to use special paddles that look
kind of like this.
You use your arms to push the paddle through the water, so that your boat will
move.
That’s right.
Now you have to paddle on the right and on the left if you want to go straight.
So you can paddle back and forth.
Now our next key word is...
island.
island.
Now an island is a piece of land that is surrounded by water.
If you are kayaking, it’s great to kayak round islands or to different islands.
When you kayak, you can explore different places.
And of course we know that Campbell is going to go kayaking.
He’s first going to explore and then he says he’s going to camp.
And what does it mean to camp?
Well, when you camp, you sleep outside.
You don’t sleep in a house.
You usually sleep in a tent.
That’s right.
So he’s going to sleep outside on an island in this area.
It’ll be a fun adventure.
This will be great.
You know, I wish that we could go and join him.
Well, at least we can learn all about kayaking with him as he is On the Go.
Let’s learn more from Thomas.
(Chinese).
Hey, everyone.
This is a kayak.
This... is a GPS.
Oh, cool.
There is a GPS here.
Yes. And this is a compass.
Uh-huh.
This is a map.
OK.
We use these three to know our course.
Oh. So we’ll use the compass, the GPS and the map to help us find out where to
go.
Yes.
That’s great.
(Music).
All right.
So what do we need to do to get ready?
First, you’ll have to put on the spray skirt.
A spray skirt.
Yes.
Huh!
Well, what do we call the spray skirt in Chinese?
(Chinese).
(Chinese).
All right.
It’s on!
What next?
Life jacket.
OK.
Ooh. I know what this is called.
(Chinese).
Yes.
OK. So I’ll put on a life jacket.
This will help me float in the water in case I fall out of the kayak.
But I won’t fall out of the kayak.
(Music).
OK.
Yes.
Are we ready now?
Of course.
Great!
Well, then let’s go!
Let’s go!
There are more than one hundred small islands in Penghu.
They look like very small dots on the bright blue water.
The best way to see the beauty of Penghu and its islands is to kayak across the
ocean.
(Music).
Well, Campbell is ready to go.
He has all the equipment - everything he needs to go kayaking.
Right.
Before you go kayaking, you have to prepare all the necessary equipment.
This equipment is very important especially for your safety.
That’s right.
He’s wearing a life jacket that will keep him safe on the water.
And also a spray skirt.
Now this, he puts over the kayak, over the area where he’s sitting, and it will
keep him dry.
It will keep him dry and it will keep him warm.
You especially need this because the waters can get pretty cold where he’s going
kayaking.
Now friends, we already learned the verb:
kayak.
But now it’s time to learn the noun.
It’s our key word.
kayak.
kayak.
A kayak is a special boat that you use when you go kayaking.
Now we know that many words in English can be a noun and a verb.
Kayak is one of these words.
We have now learned the verb and the noun.
You can kayak somewhere in your kayak.
And a kayak is a long boat that is not very wide.
It’s quite narrow.
You can have a kayak for one person or a double kayak for two people.
Oh, now that sounds like a lot of fun.
But of course Campbell is kayaking in a single-person kayak.
That’s right.
Well, we also found the answer to Today’s Mission.
The question is: What can Campbell use to help him find out where to go?
What can Campbell use to help him find out where to go?
Well, he can use a GPS, a compass, and a map.
And what can you use to learn more?
Well, you can use some time with Thomas.
Let’s go!
(Chinese).
Wow. This sea cave really is a nice place to rest.
All right.
Well, I’m ready to go.
Where are we going now?
OK.
We are going to another island to camp.
Oh, great! Well, let’s go!
OK. Let’s go.
We’re finally here!
This is the island where we will be spending the night.
This island is called (Chinese) Island.
Now nobody lives here.
But tonight, this is where the (Chinese) and I will be camping.
So let’s go set up our tent.
OK.
(Music).
Well, our tent is set up.
We’re ready for tonight.
I am tired.
I’m gonna go get some sleep.
See you next time...
On the Go!
(Background Noise).
(Music).
All right.
So you do have to rest because kayaking can be a very tiring sport.
Now you’ve been kayaking, right, Andrea?
Yes, I have.
I enjoy kayaking.
Now does it make you really tired to do it?
Is it good exercise?
Well, it is great exercise.
But yes, you get very tired after kayaking, especially your arms, because you’re
always moving your arms when you’re in the kayak.
So you’ll need to rest.
Our first key word is...
rest.
rest.
Now when you rest, you take a break.
Maybe you’ve been working very hard or exercising, playing a sport.
You need to rest because then you’ll have more energy.
When you rest, you are not moving around and you are not active or working.
When you rest, you take a break.
So friends, what do you do to rest?
Well, some people rest by reading a book or they rest by watching TV.
But maybe you’re resting right now and learning English at the same time.
Well, our next key word is...
tent.
tent.
Now a tent, as Andrea said earlier, is something that you can sleep in when you
go camping.
A tent is very small.
It’s good to travel with.
But when you get to a place where you want to rest or stop, you can put up your
tent.
That means you open it up and get ready to sleep inside the tent.
It is very important to have a tent when you’re camping because it will protect
you from the rain.
And it might also protect you from wild animals.
Wooh!
Wow, the animals?
Oh.
Do you think there are wild animals on the island?
There might be.
I hope Campbell is OK.
I think he’ll be fine.
OK. OK.
Well, right now we know Thomas is OK and he’s ready to teach you some more.
(Background Noise).
(Chinese).
