Hey, everybody. Welcome to Let’s Talk in English on PTS and the radio.
My name is Billy.
And I’m Andrea.
Today is Friday, so that means that we are On the Go.
On the Go.
Today we are playing ice hockey.
Now come on, Andrea. Let’s show them how to set up for the ice hockey.
OK.
You’re just gonna stand like this.
Make sure you put your butt out a little bit, right?
Butt out.
Right.
OK.
And then you skate like this, right?
And you have to have a hockey stick.
Of course.
And we don’t have all of that, but we do have today’s key words.
OK. Let’s start going over them right now.
The first is, of course, hockey.
hockey.
Hockey is a very popular sport in Canada.
Our next key word is...
ice rink.
ice rink.
The ice rink is only open in the winter.
That’s when most people play hockey.
pad.
pad.
Simon wears pads on his knees when he goes in-line skating.
ice skate.
ice skate.
Make sure you have your ice skates before you go to the ice rink.
goal.
goal.
Our team got a goal!
Now we are winning!
penalty.
penalty.
Ken got a penalty at the soccer game.
He kicked another player.
Well friends, let’s say these key words again.
The first one is...
hockey.
hockey.
Our next key word is...
ice rink.
ice rink.
pad.
pad.
ice skate.
ice skate.
goal.
goal.
penalty.
penalty.
OK. Great job, everybody.
Now let’s go see Eddy for Today’s Mission.
Yeah, OK.
Hey, Eddy.
So if hockey has a lot of ice, then that makes it the coolest sport in the
world.
Oh, OK.
That’s right, Eddy.
Because ice is cool.
I got it.
And you’re the coolest meerkat in the world, so...
Well, of course. Ha, we all knew that.
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah. Can you give us the mission?
OK. Yes.
Today’s Mission.
What happens when a hockey player gets a penalty?
What happens went a hockey player gets a penalty?
All right.
We’ll find out as we go On the Go.
(Music).
Wow! Look at this.
Ice hockey in Taiwan! Come on! Let’s play!
Andrea.
Ha, ha, ha.
You shouldn’t play hockey.
You might get hurt.
I might get hurt?
I challenge you to play a game of ice hockey.
OK. Let’s see if girls really can play ice hockey.
Let’s go...
On the Go!
Wooh!
(Music).
Ice hockey is a winter sport.
It is very popular in countries that have a lot of snow and ice.
So having an ice rink in Taiwan is very special.
Brrr! It’s cold in here.
Oh!
Ouch.
That must have hurt.
Are you scared?
No, of course not.
It just looks uh... a little dangerous.
Well, that’s why we have to wear hockey equipment.
Now where can we get some equipment?
Hey! Over there!
(Music).
Wow, Andrea. So you and Daniel are going to face off.
You’re going to play each other in a game of hockey.
That’s right.
I like to play hockey.
We’ll see how good Daniel is.
Well, we know that Andrea is from Canada.
So she must be a great hockey player.
Now where’s Daniel from?
Uh, Daniel is from America.
Oh, not such a great hockey player, maybe.
We’re going to find out.
But first we’re going to look at our key words.
Our first one in this conversation is...
hockey.
hockey.
Now hockey is a sport that is usually played in winter.
You play hockey on ice.
You can play hockey indoors or outdoors.
Now hockey is a fun sport, but it can also be dangerous.
You have to be careful.
You have to make sure you have all the hockey equipment.
Right.
Now there are different things you need.
You need a hockey stick.
Is it called a stick?
Yes, you need a hockey stick.
And a hockey puck.
Is that the little black, round thing?
Yep. We’ll be learning about that.
Now that hockey puck could fly up and hit you in the face if you’re not careful,
right, Andrea?
That’s true.
So you want to be careful when you’re playing hockey or when you’re watching
hockey at an ice rink.
OK. Our next key word is...
ice rink.
ice rink.
Now an ice rink is a place where you play hockey.
You go into a building and you see a big place with ice on the ground, and
that’s where you go and skate and play hockey.
An ice rink is a cold place.
You can go there to play hockey or to go skating.
Well, I have a place we can go right now.
Let’s go see Thomas and learn some more.
(Background Noise).
(Chinese).
(Music).
Ice hockey is a fun sport, but it can be dangerous.
That is why players need to wear protective pads so they don’t get hurt.
Each player will need shin guards, pants, shoulder pads, elbow pads, skates, a
jersey and, of course, a helmet.
Well, I’m ready if you are, Andrea.
Yep.
Wow, with all those pads on, I’m... sure that you uh, definitely won’t get hurt.
After the players put on their protective gear and ice skates, they will need
hockey sticks.
Hockey sticks can be made of wood, aluminum and fiberglass.
(Music).
All right. Well, we are getting ready to play hockey.
One important thing to remember is to wear hockey pads.
That’s right.
As I told you in the last conversation, you can have this black hockey puck
coming straight at your face or your legs or your arms.
And if it hits you, it’s going to hurt unless you’re wearing pads.
So let’s learn that key word.
pad.
pad.
A pad is something that you wear on your body to protect yourself.
When you play sports, you can wear pads.
So pads are usually thick but kind of soft, so if something hits you, it won’t
hurt you.
Now I told you that a hockey puck could hit you.
But something else that could hit you and really hurt is an ice skate.
Now if someone took off their ice skate and start hitting you with it...
Oh, oh, Billy, yeah, no, no, no.
That would really hurt.
That would really hurt.
That’s why you want to wear a pad.
Exactly.
That’s true.
But let’s first learn that key word, OK?
It is...
ice skate.
ice skate.
An ice state looks kind of like a boot.
You put it on your foot.
But it has a blade at the bottom to help you move across the ice.
So it’s a shoe with a blade at the bottom.
The blade is usually made of metal and very sharp.
Yes, so you want to be careful.
Wooh, all right.
Just kidding.
Let’s keep learning more from Thomas.
(Background Noise).
(Chinese).
(Music).
You ready to lose to a girl, Daniel?
Ha! We’ll see about that.
To play hockey, you need to be a good ice skater, passer and shooter.
The object in hockey is simple.
Get the puck - a rubber disc - into the other team’s net.
Once it’s in the net, it’s called a goal.
Like most sports, the team that scores the most goals wins.
Another big part of the game are penalties.
A penalty is given when a player breaks a rule.
For punishment, the player must go into the penalty box.
Yeah! Oh, yeah! We’re winners.
Nice drop, Andrea.
Maybe next time we can have a rematch.
Sounds good, Daniel.
Thanks for playing with me today.
And thank you for joining us today On the Go - hockey style.
Now uh, since I won the hockey game, Daniel has to buy me dinner.
Oh, no, no, no, no...
Uh... What... What?
Daniel! Hey!
(Music).
Oh, yeah, Andrea.
You won and you get a free dinner because you scored a goal.
That’s right.
I won the hockey game.
Now I just have to find Daniel for the dinner.
Right. Well, he’s trying to get away, but I think you will catch him because he
doesn’t look like a very good skater.
Well, I guess I’ve had a little bit more practice.
And you are Canadian.
OK. Well, we’re trying to learn English, so let’s look at our first key word.
It is...
goal.
goal.
Now when you’re playing a sport, the goal of the game is to score goals.
So in ice hockey, when you hit the pop into the net, you have scored a goal.
And when you score a goal, usually everyone on your team is very happy, very
excited.
People who are watching the game will also get excited when you score a goal.
Now if Andrea scored a goal, if we were playing together, I might get really
upset, sad and angry.
So as Andrea was celebrating, ”Oh, yeah, I scored a goal!”.
Woo-hoo! I’m winning. I’m winning.
If I walk over her and go like this.
Bang! Bang!
Billy!
That would be a penalty.
Let’s look at our next key word.
penalty.
penalty.
Now a penalty is something given to a player in the sport when they do something
wrong.
Yes. When you do something wrong while playing a sport, you get a penalty.
Now usually when you get a penalty, you have to stop playing.
Maybe you have to sit outside or you have to go in the penalty box.
Oh! And Andrea, that’s the answer to Today’s Mission.
The question is:
What happens when a hockey player gets a penalty?
What happens when a hockey player gets a penalty?
He goes in the penalty box.
All right.
Right now we’re going to go and see Thomas.
(Background Noise).
(Chinese).
Bye-bye!
