Welcome to Studio Classroom.
My name is Gabe.
My name is Carolyn.
Today we are continuing our lesson on Spring Fashion 2014.
Yesterday we learned about a few of the clothing trends for this season.
And today we will learn about other styles and colors that are popular this
spring.
So open up your magazine to the second day for Spring Fashion 2014 and let's
begin.
(Music).
Spring Fashion 2014.
Hairstyles.
Soft, flowing hair with natural-looking waves is popular and pretty this spring.
An older style, though, hit the runway in a big way: the braid.
With the braid wrapped around the head, this soft, pretty style is attractive on
everyone.
Warm it up.
Some of this season's hottest colors look like they've been picked straight from
the flower garden.
Vibrant shades of red, pink and orange are the trend, and yellow is one of this
spring's major colors.
Cool it down.
Moving from hot to cold, cool pastels are also popular this season with soft
shades of light blue, green and violet.
Hi, everyone. I'm Michelle.
(Chinese).
Thank you, Michelle.
Well, let's get started with our lesson by looking at this first section here on
hairstyles.
Different times of the year call for different hairstyles.
And after the long winter months when people might be a little reluctant to get
their hair cut, a fresh style for spring can be very nice.
So here we learn what's popular on the runway for spring.
Among those styles is soft, flowing hair with natural-looking waves.
OK. Well, now there are all sorts of things that we should talk about, so let's
start with flowing.
This word is usually used to describe water as it is moving.
So if you say that hair is flowing, then it is like saying the person's hair is
smooth and moves like water.
This is a great way to compliment someone's hair especially if they have long
hair.
So you could say that a girl has long, flowing hair or that her hair flows
gently down to her shoulders.
Now if you go back to the image of water flowing in a stream, the water usually
has waves in it.
Right. So "flowing" is also usually used to talk about someone with wavy hair,
not straight hair, which brings us to another word we should talk about: waves.
Here again we have a water image that is used to describe hair.
If someone's hair has waves in it, you could say that their hair is wavy or that
they have wavy hair.
This means that their hair isn't straight, but it also isn't curly.
Yes. There are many different types of hair and different ways that hair can be
styled.
Sometimes people like to have natural-looking hair while others enjoy having
hair that is obviously styled.
And I think we should talk about that as well.
If something is natural-looking, that means that it seems like it belongs.
There is nothing odd about it.
It looks natural.
There are several ways that you could use this phrase.
And you can use it to talk about a person's appearance.
You could say that they are natural-looking.
For example, you could say that a girl's makeup is natural-looking.
That means that it looks like she isn't wearing makeup.
And if someone's hair is natural-looking, that means that it doesn't look like
it has been dyed a different color or that it has been permed,
which is another word we should talk about when discussing hairstyles: perm.
This is actually short for the noun permanent.
If you get a perm, or a permanent, that means that you have your hair treated
with chemicals to make a certain hairstyle last a long time.
For example, you could get a perm to make straight hair curly.
This is usually just called a perm.
If you make curly hair straight, many people call this a straight perm instead
of just using the word perm.
You could also get a perm to make your hair wavy.
Either way, these hairstyles are long-lasting, which is why they have the name
permanent.
But they aren't really permanent.
You have to have you hair treated on a regular basis if you want to keep that
style.
Good point.
Well, natural-looking waves are popular for spring this year.
But there is also another popular hairstyle: the braid.
There are many different ways that people with long hair can style their hair,
and wrapping a braid around their head is one of them.
This reminds me of the style worn by Katniss in the Hunger Games.
She always wore her hair in a braid.
And now it's fashionable to braid your hair in many different ways this spring.
Carolyn, you just used a great word that we should talk about: fashionable.
If something is fashionable, that means that it is stylish or in style.
Now it is important not to get this word confused with the word fashion.
Right. Fashion is a noun while fashionable is usually an adjective.
If you want to say that someone has clothes that are current with fashion
trends, you would say that they are very fashionable.
Or if you want to describe a shirt that is in fashion, you would say that it is
a fashionable shirt.
Try using the word fashionable sometime today.
Well, we should continue on with our lesson.
Some of the colors this season look like they have been picked straight from the
flower garden.
And Liz wants to tell us more about that now.
Welcome to the Grammar Gym, friends.
My name is Liz.
Here's our Grammar Tip sentence.
Some of this season's hottest colors look like they've been picked straight from
the flower garden.
Our focus is on the phrase: straight from.
The writer is saying that the season's hottest colors look like they're directly
from the flower garden.
But obviously, no one can pick colors from a flower garden,
so this phrase, straight from the flower garden, is just an exaggerated way of
saying these colors are so bright and strong, they look like they're fresh from
a garden.
You can use this phrase, straight from somewhere, when you want to emphasize how
something is so much a certain way that it looks like it's from a certain place.
For example: Stuart's outfit was so dirty; it looked like it came straight from
a garbage dump.
Or: The wedding cake looks like it came straight from a wedding magazine cover;
it's absolutely beautiful.
So friends, give this phrase a try next time when you want to describe how
something is so strong or so much a certain way.
That's all the time we have for today.
Don't forget to check out today's Grammar Tip section in your magazine.
This is Liz from the Grammar Gym.
I'll see you next time.
Thank you, Liz.
The next two small sections talk about colors; one of them is Warm it up while
the other is Cool it down.
These are fun phrases to talk about temperatures, but they can also be used to
describe colors.
Right. Warm colors are things like yellow, red, orange and pink.
They are bright, vibrant colors that are generally happy and great for spring.
This is especially true because many times winter is filled with dark colors
like grey, black, brown and blue.
Now this spring, cool colors are also popular.
This might seem a little bit strange, but they aren't cold colors, they are
cool.
These are pastel colors that aren't quite as bright and are a little bit softer
than the vibrant reds and oranges.
There are actually many different ways to describe colors: warm, cool, cold,
vibrant, classic, bright, dark, soft, harsh, pastel, deep and many more.
These are all great adjectives for you to use when trying to describe the way
something looks.
So try to think of some other ways to describe colors.
Now one of the words that you just mentioned, Carolyn, was the word soft.
This is one listed in our lesson.
So what does it mean if a color is soft?
That means that it is pale or not bright.
It is very gentle and pleasant to look at.
Sometimes colors can be a little too bright, and we don't want to look at them.
But if it is soft, it is very nice to look at.
Great. So vibrant colors and soft colors are both in style this spring.
For this season, the vibrant colors are warm colors like red, pink and yellow.
Ah, yes. And the soft colors are cool ones like blue, green and violet.
I think it's a good idea since cooler colors could be too dark for spring if
they aren't soft.
I agree.
And we will continue learning more from our lesson right afterthis.
