Welcome back.
Today we've been talking about hairstyles and colors that are fashionable this
spring.
Flowing, wavy hair looks natural and beautiful, and braids are also very
popular.
Since it's spring, and there are lots of beautiful flowers blooming, bright,
warm vibrant colors are also in style.
However, cooler pastels are also popular.
Let's learn about some other classic styles that never seem to go out of
fashion.
Spring Fashion 2014.
Classic white.
White is a favorite every spring and summer, but this year the new
white-on-white styles will provide a striking appearance.
Opposites attract.
Once again fashion designers have made the classic black and white combination
one of the year's top 10 trends.
Pretty in pink.
Hints of pink in varying shades are being used with popular athletic styles to
soften the effect.
Pack away your heavy, drab winter clothes, and make room for this season's great
new looks.
(Chinese).
And now let's go to our teachers.
Thank you, Michelle.
Well, we have more colors in this section.
And the first one we learn about is classic white.
Carolyn, what does it mean if white is classic?
When talking about fashion, if you say that something is classic, that means
that it never goes out of style.
It will always be popular.
And white is a classic color especially for spring.
That's right.
We see in our lesson that it is actually a favorite every spring and summer.
And we should take a look at that phrase: a favorite.
If something is a favorite, that means that it is something that is liked best.
Usually we say that something is my favorite such as my favorite color is blue.
But here we place the word "a" in front of it to make it more general instead of
personal.
For example, the card game Go Fish is a favorite of many children.
So children in general like to play that game.
It is a favorite.
And white is a favorite for spring and summer.
We also learn that there are white-on-white styles.
Now this might sound a little bit odd, but it means that you pair one piece of
white clothing with another piece of white clothing, white-on-white.
In winter, many people like to wear black-on-black.
They wear a black shirt with black pants.
So you can use this type of phrase with other colors.
You can also use it to talk about combinations of different colors.
For example, you can have blue-on-white.
That means that the base or bottom color is white, and the color that is on top
is blue.
Black and white are great colors to combine with other colors because black and
white are neutral.
This is true.
They go with just about anything, including each other, which is what we see in
the next section: Opposites attract.
Well, we've talked a little bit about black and white.
And now I think it's time for us to join Steve and Ken in the Information Cloud
to learn about the new black.
If you're a woman, the color of dress you should always have in your wardrobe is
black.
Why?
Because the color black, in women's fashion, has long been considered a classic
color for any occasion.
Since black is always in style in the fashion industry, saying "something is the
new black" means that it is the hottest new thing.
So if we want to describe a situation in which something new has replaced
whatever was popular before, we can say that thing is the new black.
For example, if brown all of the sudden becomes a popular color, we might say:
Brown is the new black.
This expression can also be used in other context outside the fashion industry.
For example, AIDS is the new leprosy.
Which simply means the effect AIDS has on modern society is similar to that of
leprosy when leprosy was an epidemic several centuries ago.
Hey, Steve, I was just reading an article in this magazine which is pretty
interesting.
It's titled Forty Is the New Thirty.
Ooh, I like the sound of that.
"Forty is the new thirty" means a lot of 40-year-olds look and act like they're
still in their 30s.
Hey, can I see that after you're done?
Sure thing.
(Chinese).
Thank you, gentlemen.
Hmm, I wonder what the new black will be next year.
I remember for a while that orange was the new black.
People were wearing orange with everything.
Yes, they were.
Well, maybe the new black will be pink.
It has been pink in the past, and the last section of our lesson is called
Pretty in pink.
This is a great phrase that is simply used to say that a girl looks nice and is
wearing the color pink.
I would probably use this when talking to a little girl.
I could tell her that she looks very pretty in pink.
And in our lesson we see a phrase: hints of pink.
If there are hints of something, that means that there isn't really a lot of it.
But there is enough of it for you to notice.
If you give someone a hint, then you give them a small piece of information.
So if there's a hint of color, then there is a small amount of color.
You could say there was a hint of blue in his suit jacket.
The suit may have been black, but there was a little bit of blue.
Well, right now it is time for us to enjoy a review skit, and then join Linda
for the Editor's Summary.
Fragrant smells, bright colors and a new life.
Yes. Spring is in the air!
Yeah.
So what should we wear?
Oh! Well, this spring there are so many choices.
How about the 70s look?
Oh, bow ties and flowing skirts.
Or we could wear the cowgirl's style.
Oh, wide belts and cowboy boots.
Or how about slogans?
You know, they're showing up everywhere there.
The more interesting the better.
Of course we could dress athletic.
It's popular now, too.
Yeah! Luxurious materials and designs are so elegant.
Wait, wait, wait! Let's go global with Hawaiian prints and Latin styles.
Oh, there are so many choices!
What about hairstyles?
That's easy - soft, flowing hair with natural-looking waves.
Or the braid.
It's an older style, but it's back in a really big way.
Yes. And the braid is attractive on everyone, even you.
Hey!
So what colors are hot this season?
Well, vibrant shades of red, pink and orange are the trend, and yellow.
It's a major spring color.
Yeah. And I heard pastels are also cool, soft shades of light blue, green and
violet.
White-on-white provides a striking appearance.
Oh! And black-on-white is a classic combination.
And pink!
Uh, spring is in the air.
Yeah. So what should we wear?
There are so many choices.
No, it's not only clothing that has a new fashion look, but hair with
natural-looking waves is in also.
And the look that goes way back - braids that wrap around one's head are in.
And what about colors?
Well, there's a wide variety that is sure to suit everyone.
Everything from white-on-white to vibrant shades of red, pink and orange are in.
And don't forget yellow - a major color for this spring.
So put away those dark winter clothes and bring out the color.
Thank you, Linda.
We've spent the last two days practicing our English while learning all about
what is in style this spring.
There are a lot of unique and interesting items that are popular right now like
Hawaiian prints, 70s looks and white-on-white combinations.
So do any of these styles interest you?
Would they help you to make a fashion statement?
Talk about it in English.
And we will see you next time right here on Studio Classroom.
(Music).
