Hello, everyone.
My name is Gabe.
My name is Carolyn.
And welcome to Studio Classroom.
Today we are welcoming the season of spring by learning about spring fashion.
So it's time to put away the winter clothes and wear something a little lighter.
And after our lesson, perhaps a little bit more fashionable.
So open up your magazine to Spring Fashion 2014, and let's begin.
(Music).
Spring Fashion 2014.
Welcome the season by wearing some of the cute new styles.
Spring is in the air!
It surrounds us with fragrant smells, bright colors and new life.
Nature's cold and damp have been replaced by sunshine and warm weather.
Similarly, it's time for people to exchange winter's heavy clothing for spring's
lighter fashions.
Popular trends.
That 70s girl.
Older styles are appearing this season as blouses with bow-tie collars return.
Other 70s looks include long, flowing skirts and dresses, bold patterns and
high-waist pants that make you look taller.
Hi, everyone. I'm Michelle.
(Chinese).
Thank you, Michelle.
It's always interesting to see what fashion designers put out for each season.
And while they always try to start new trends and keep things interesting in the
fashion world, there are some things that are always in style.
Like floral prints. But what does that mean?
The word "floral" is related to the word flower, and print is a pattern or
design.
So what are floral prints?
Flower patterns!
And these are very common to see people wearing in spring.
With all of the flowers blooming outside, people also like to make that beauty a
part of their wardrobe.
You can find floral prints in many different designs and styles.
Right.
You can have just about anything in floral print: jackets, shirts, pants, socks,
shoes, hats, blouses and skirts.
Really, if you can wear it, you can probably find it in floral print.
You can also get floral prints in a variety of colors, not just the natural
colors of the flowers.
Right. So you could have a shirt with pink daisies or purple roses on it.
Those aren't the natural colors for those flowers, but they still look nice.
Aside from floral prints, fashion designers have many new trends that were
displayed on the runway.
So let's continue with our lesson.
It's springtime, so that means that nature's cold and damp have been replaced by
sunshine and warm weather.
And that's a great pattern to know: something has been replaced by something
else.
You could use this to show that a change has been made, and something new is now
where something old used to be.
For example, warm winter clothes have been replaced by lighter spring fashions.
People put away their heavy clothes and take out their lighter, brighter
clothes.
Or last year's fashion trends have been replaced by a new line of styles.
So there are all new styles to choose from for 2014.
Gabe, you just used a great fashion word: line.
Now there are so many words that are specific to fashion, and we've already
learned a few.
In fact, we learned a word similar to "line" last month: collection.
Collection is used to talk about specifically... or to talk specifically about a
group of clothing that is made available at a certain time of the year.
Line, on the other hand, has a broader meaning.
It can be used to refer to any set of products that a company produces.
For example, that company is famous for its perfume line.
Or they want to expand their product lines to include new items.
But line can also be used to refer to a clothing collection.
So you can ask: What do you think of the new spring line?
That means you want to know someone's opinion on some of the new styles for
spring.
Well, let's learn about these spring fashions.
Wait, wait, Carolyn.
Before we do that, we should look at the word fashion.
Should we say fashion or fashions?
What's the difference?
Good question.
Both of them are nouns.
And really, "fashions" is just the plural form of the word fashion.
But how do you know when to make fashion plural or singular?
If you are talking about different clothing styles, you should use fashions.
There is more than one style, so fashion should be plural.
For example, she always wears the latest fashions.
You could also say she always wears the latest styles.
But if you are talking about fashion as a larger idea, you should not add an S.
For example, fashion is a very important part of her life.
She loves to know what is in style.
Here style is singular, so fashion should also be singular.
So a good way to know whether or not to use fashion or fashions is to try using
the word style.
If style should have an S on the end, then fashion should probably have an S as
well.
Great. Well, I think it's time for us to talk about our first fashion trend -
That 70s girl.
And from the title of this section, we get the idea that women's fashion will
feature some styles that were worn during the 70s.
And that's exactly what we find out in the first sentence.
Older styles are appearing this season.
Many different clothing features that were common during the 70s were seen on
runways.
Yes. The first of those styles listed here is the blouse with a bow-tie collar.
So instead of having a round or pointed collar on these blouses, there is a
ribbon that goes around the neck that can be tied.
And another style taken from the 70s fashion are bold patterns and high-waisted
pants.
Let's take a moment to look at these terms.
If something is bold, that means it is easily noticed.
It can be used to describe many different things.
For example, you can say that colors or patterns are bold.
But you can also say that the words written on a page are bold.
That means that words are written darker and thicker than other words on the
page.
You can also use "bold" to describe a person.
If you say that a person is bold, that means that they are confident, they're
not afraid of people.
For example, Jim was very bold when he told his boss that he didn't like the
company policies.
Or Jamie was very bold when she told her friend that she doesn't like her new
haircut.
That can be a very dangerous thing to do.
Well, we still have several more fashion trends to talk about today.
In the next part of the lesson we see a section titled Slogans for all.
Steve and Ken have something they would like to share with us in the Information
Cloud about knowing the message before you wear it.
So let's join them now.
Some people like to wear T-shirts with English words or phrases on them.
Now there's really nothing wrong with that.
But before you put on such a shirt, you really should know what kind of a
message that shirt is conveying.
We usually buy a shirt because we like the way it looks, and shirts with English
words on them can look pretty cool.
However, when you wear a shirt with a slogan on it, you're telling others you
agree with that slogan that that's what you believe in.
For example, if you wear a T-shirt that says "Save the rain forests," people
will assume that you care about the rain forests.
And a shirt's slogan will also tell people what kind of a person you are.
If your shirt says "Bat from hell," then you're telling others that you are a
bat from hell.
So if you're a boy, you probably wouldn't want to put on a shirt that says
Sissy.
Or if you are a middle-aged housewife, wearing a shirt that says "Juicy American
Princess" is probably not such a good idea.
Also, you need to watch out for nonsensical English on T-shirts, especially here
in Asia.
Phrases like "evil rubber" or "a moose milk" just don't mean anything to
Westerners.
And as an English teacher, I often see spelling mistakes and grammatical errors
on people's T-shirts.
So unless you want to leave people scratching their heads, don't wear a shirt
that displays questionable English.
And more importantly, don't wear a shirt that carries a message you don't
understand.
(Chinese).
