Hello and welcome back.
Today we are learning about spring fashion.
There are many great things about spring, one of which is putting away our heavy
winter clothes and getting out the bright colors of spring.
So far we've learned about a few of the season's latest styles which are
inspired by older 70s fashion.
Open up your magazines as we continue learning about some of the other unique
styles for spring.
Spring Fashion 2014.
The cowgirl style.
Show off your inner cowgirl by including a few Western elements like extra-wide
belts worn low.
Don't forget cowboy boots that can be worn with anything from skirts to jeans.
Slogans for all.
Words and expression are showing up on everything from purses to shirts.
The more interesting the slogan, the better it is because you are, after all,
making a fashion statement.
Athletic becomes elegant.
During New York Fashion Week, athletic pants and jackets appeared on the runway
in luxurious materials and designs.
Global influence.
Updated Hawaiian prints and Latin American styles can be seen in stylish shorts,
dresses, pants and more this season.
(Chinese).
And now let's go to our teachers.
Thank you, Michelle.
We just read in our magazines about three more styles for spring, so let's learn
some more about them.
The first one is cowgirl style.
Gabe, what's a cowgirl?
Well, this is similar to a cowboy.
A cowgirl is a woman who works on a ranch and takes care of cattle or cows.
She does most of her work while riding on a horse.
And since she takes care of cows, she is called a cowgirl.
So if someone is a cowgirl, they need to wear clothes that are tough like boots
and jeans.
They also might have large belts.
And we see some of these items mentioned in our article.
Yes. We read: Show off your inner cowgirl.
And I think we should take a look at that phrase: show off your inner something.
That means you are going to take a special quality that people usually don't see
and put it on display.
For example, you could say he showed off his inner chef by making dinner for all
of his friends.
They didn't know that he was a good cook before, but he showed them his skill by
making dinner.
And now they all know how great he can cook.
You could also say: Show off your inner fashion designer by designing your own
clothes.
You never know.
You might have some really great ideas.
And you can show them off.
And if you want to show off your inner cowgirl, you can add some Western
elements to your clothing.
Now Gabe, Western can mean a few different things.
What does it mean here?
You're right.
Western can be used to refer to Western culture like the United States, or it
can be used to talk about something in the western part of a place.
But here it is actually talking about the clothing from a specific area of the
United States.
Right. This is the Wild West or the western part of America.
So here, Western clothing would include things like blue jeans, leather belts,
snakeskin boots and big hats,
things that you might imagine a cowboy or a cowgirl to wear.
So try to add some of these Western elements to your wardrobe this spring.
Also our lesson points out that cowboy boots can be worn with just about
anything, including blue jeans and skirts.
Well, you can certainly make a fashion statement wearing cowboy boots with a
skirt.
And let's continue to the next section: Slogans for all.
And that is where we run into the phrase: make a fashion statement.
If you make a fashion statement, that means you try to show your personality
through the things that you wear,
or that you wear a certain item to show people that you know a lot about
fashion.
Well, we want to make sure that you know a lot, so let's go see Liz in the
Grammar Gym, and see what she has for us today.
Hello, friends.
How are you doing today?
My name is Liz.
And thanks for joining me here at the Grammar Gym.
We see this sentence in today's lesson:
The more interesting the slogan, the better it is...
That's our Grammar Tip sentence.
Actually, what the writer means is the more interesting the slogan is, the
better it is.
However, if we look at the original sentence, we don't see the verb "is" in the
first part of the sentence, right?
This is something that many native speakers do.
Since it is understood that "more interesting" describes "slogan," the verb "is"
just doesn't get mentioned.
This is often the case in informal situations.
For example: Rob loves to climb mountains. The more difficult the climb, the
more exciting it is.
Or: This soup takes a long time to make, but remember: The longer the cooking
time, the tastier it is.
Remember, this pattern is best used in informal situations.
And if you'd like to see some more example sentences, they're available in
today's Grammar Tip section in your Studio Classroom magazine.
This is Liz from the Grammar Gym.
See you next time.
Thank you, Liz.
Well, moving right along in our lesson, we learn that athletic clothing has some
elegant elements added to it,
and that designers are being influenced by different styles from around the
world.
Yes. In the short section titled Global influence, we see that Hawaiian prints
have been updated.
But Gabe, what's a Hawaiian print?
That's a good question.
That's a specific pattern or print that is used on shirts.
It usually has very bright colors and bold floral or leaf designs.
Usually the flowers and leaves used in those designs are ones found in Hawaii.
And people like to buy those shirts when they go on vacation to Hawaii because
they are very comfortable.
But now you can buy them just about anywhere.
And with their popularity this spring, I'm sure they will be even more
available.
You know, I think you might be right about that.
But these might not be the traditional Hawaiian prints that you've seen before
because they have been updated.
This means that there have been some changes made to make them a little more
modern.
You can also see some Latin American influences in clothing styles this spring.
Wow! We've covered a lot of information today.
So let's take time to review with Linda in the Editor's Summary.
Our FASHION article tells us about some of spring's new looks.
Some popular trends include going back to the styles of the 70s with long,
flowing skirts and dresses.
They're even bringing back high-waist pants and bold patterns.
And that's not all.
The cowboy look with extra-wide belts in boots is back.
And if that look isn't for you, then perhaps you'd like the athletic look with
the new luxurious materials and designs on athletic pants and jackets.
Thank you, Linda.
Today we've learned about a lot of different collections of clothing that will
be popularity this spring.
Hmm, Carolyn, do you see yourself as a "that 70s girl" or "showing off your
inner cowgirl"?
Well, Gabe, I don't know that either of those looks are really my style.
But it would be fun to have a few pieces of clothing from each of those
collections.
Maybe I can have a big hat or a big belt.
And I do like high-waisted pants, though.
Yeah. You know, I think you could pull those off pretty well, that 70s girl or
that inner cowgirl.
You know, I do like the idea of wearing clothes from other decades or other
periods of time.
It's cool when those kind of things come back into style.
Kind of like bell-bottoms... I like the idea of people wearing bell-bottoms.
But I don't think that that's in style right now.
No, no. Those aren't in style now, although they did come back for a little
while in the 90s.
Well, that's all the time we have for today.
But be sure to join us again tomorrow as we continue learning about spring
fashion.
We'll see you then right here at Studio Classroom.
