Hello, everyone, and welcome to Studio Classroom.
My name is Gabe.
My name is Carolyn.
And today we are continuing our lesson on Ariana Grande.
This young singer has been compared to Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston for her
amazing singing skills.
We learned yesterday that she is always working and performing.
But today we will learn about how she makes time for others.
So open up your magazine and let's begin with the first reading for today.
Ariana Grande.
Making time for others.
Even with Ariana's busy schedule, she finds time to care for others.
When she was 10, she helped start a youth singing group called Kids Who Care.
The group raises funds for charities, and in 2007, they raised over $500,000.
In 2009, Ariana traveled to South Africa, where she performed and taught music
to sick children.
Ariana's fans love her kind and friendly manner, and she appreciates them.
She stays in regular contact with more than 10 million Twitter followers and
over 7.5 million Instagram followers.
Ariana also has millions of Facebook likes.
Hi, everyone. I'm Michelle.
(Chinese).
Thank you, Michelle.
Wow, I wonder when Ariana sleeps.
How is she able to find time for others in her busy schedule?
That is a great question.
But we will have to wait to discuss it because Liz wants to tell us more about
this opening sentence in the Grammar Gym.
Then let's go see what she has to say.
Hello, friends.
Welcome to the Grammar Gym.
My name is Liz.
In today's lesson we see this sentence:
Even with Ariana's busy schedule, she finds time to care for others.
That's our Grammar Tip sentence.
What the writer is saying is even though Ariana has a busy schedule, she is
still able to have time to care for others.
But notice the sentence pattern in today's sentence: Even with..., [subejct]
finds time to...
This is a nice and simple sentence pattern to use when you want to talk about
how someone has something or a situation going on and yet is still able to have
time to do something.
OK. Here are some example sentences.
Even with three part-time jobs, Joseph finds time to do his homework.
Or: Even with her three little children to look after, Melody finds time to bake
a cake every day.
Now it's your turn.
Think of something that someone is still able to find time to do even though
they might have other things to do, and practice using this sentence pattern.
If you want to see some more example sentences, you can check out today's
Grammar Tip section in your Studio Classroom magazine.
That's it for today.
This is Liz from the Grammar Gym.
See you next time.
Thank you, Liz.
So even with her busy schedule, she finds time to care for others. Amazing!
It really is amazing.
And we learned that this isn't anything new.
It's been a part of her life almost as long as she's been performing.
You're right.
She actually helped to start a youth singing group to raise money for charities
when she was only 10 years old.
And I really like the name of her group: Kids Who Care.
Well, why do you like that name, Carolyn?
Because it sounds like the name I gave you "Car-car"?
No. No, not that nickname.
Because of the way it sounds; "kids" and "care" start with different letters but
the same sound.
It's also nice that they are caring for other people and trying to raise money
for charities.
That is a really good thing to do: help people in need.
And she didn't stop with just this children singing group, she went to South
Africa to perform and teach music and sick children.
She seems like a very caring person.
We also learn about how much she appreciates her fans.
She has millions of them, but she manages to stay in regular contact with them.
Oh. Hey, let's look at a couple of things there.
First, to stay in contact.
What does it mean to stay in contact?
That means that you talk to someone often.
If you are in contact with something, that means that you are touching it.
But if you are in contact with a person, that usually means that you talk to
them and know what they are doing.
So it's good to stay in contact with our family if we live far away.
Or even if we live nearby, we should still stay in contact with people who are
important to us.
Right. But if you haven't spoken with someone for a while, you could say that
you lost contact with that person.
If you lose contact, then you don't really know what they are doing now because
it's been a long time since you talked to them.
Right.
But Ariana stays in regular contact with her fans.
This means that she talks to them often.
So if you do something often or in a dependable way, you can say it is regular.
For example, the trains are on a regular schedule.
They arrive every five minutes.
Now I also hear this word used a lot with the word basis.
So you can say that you do something on a regular basis, which means that you
have a habit of doing something.
For example, you could say: I clean my room on a regular basis; or I call my
family on a regular basis.
You might also say: I buy groceries on a regular basis; or I eat at that
restaurant on a regular basis.
Maybe you are even a regular at that restaurant.
Ah, very good, Gabe.
We've talked about that use of the word regular before.
Well, Ariana stays in regular contact with her followers.
Wait, why are people following her?
That's a little creepy.
I don't think I'd like that very much, Gabe.
Carolyn, no. People aren't really following her around.
It's a term we use with social media like Twitter or Facebook.
But let's look at that word: follower.
If you are a follower, that means you pay attention to or follow what someone
else is doing.
Ah, I see. So far example, you could ask someone if they follow anyone on
Twitter.
And they could say they follow five movie stars on Twitter.
Right. You can also follow people on Instagram, Facebook and other types of
social media,
so each time a person you follow writes something online or post a picture, you
know about it.
Great! Is there anyone you follow?
Are you interested in following someone using Facebook, Instagram or Twitter?
Talk about it in English.
That's a great idea. And I have another good idea.
Let's continue learning about Ariana in our lesson.
If you look at the next section in your magazine, you see the title Staying
sweet.
Now I know that things like candy and cake and ice cream can be sweet, but what
does it mean when a person is sweet?
If a person is sweet, that means he or she is a very nice person.
They are kind to other people, and in return, people think that the person is
lovable.
And from what I've seen of Ariana's interviews, she is very sweet.
She likes to laugh and smile and has very kind reactions to the questions she's
asked.
That's true.
Last year she won an award for New Artists of the Year at the American Music
Awards.
And her reaction was very sweet.
She was so surprised.
Yes, she was.
And she was very nervous.
She could hardly believe that she won and was in shock.
But she still made sure to quickly read off the list of people she wanted to
thank before getting off the stage.
And that wasn't the only time she was on stage that night.
She also gave a wonderful performance.
Her song was very soulful, and she had a beautiful range.
Oh, that's a good musical word to look at: range.
When we talk about someone's vocal range, that means we are talking about the
lowest note a person can sing to the highest note they can sing.
And Ariana has a wide range and can hit low notes, but she can also sing very
high, like Mariah Carey.
Now this isn't just used to describe the human voice.
It can also be used to talk about instruments.
Right.
You could ask, "What is the range for this instrument?" which means what are the
lowest and highest notes.
Do you know what your own vocal range is when you sing?
Well, try to find out, then talk about it in English.
But for now, we should continue talking about how sweet Ariana is.
In the second part of our lesson today, we see a quote from Ariana that talks
about fitting in.
What does it mean to fit in?
Well, if you fit in, that means that you are like everyone else.
There isn't anything really different about you, so you are included with the
rest of the group.
If someone wants to fit in, that means that they want to be like the other
people who are there.
For example, if a student moves to a new school, they want to be able to fit in
so that they can make new friends.
So they might try to wear stylish clothes to fit in with the other people there.
Well, we will continue learning about Ariana right afterthis.
