Welcome back.
Today we are continuing to learn about Ariana Grande.
So far we've learned that despite her busy schedule, she still makes time for
others.
Whether it's raising money for charities, helping sick children in South Africa
or staying in contact with her millions of followers, she makes time in her
schedule for them.
Let's continue learning about this young star in the next part of our lesson.
Ariana Grande.
Staying sweet.
Many young artists allow fame to change them in a negative way.
But not Arianna.
She recently told Rolling Stone magazine, "I don't feel much pressure to fit in.
I have really good friends and good family.
And if I don't fit in somewhere else, I fit in at home." With that kind of
attitude, Ariana's star will shine brightly for years to come.
All right.
(Chinese).
And now let's see what our teachers are up to.
Thank you, Michelle.
Before the break we were talking about Ariana fitting in.
Now the opposite of fitting in is to stand out.
That means that something is clearly different from the other things.
Now this could be a good thing or a bad thing.
For example, Henry's good manners make him stand out from the rest of the
students.
So here the way that Henry stands out or is different from his classmates is a
good thing.
Right, but it could also be negative.
For example, the little boy stood out when he stopped dancing during the play.
Here it wasn't a good thing to stand out because he was supposed to be dancing.
Hmm, maybe he forgot or was distracted by something, but either way it made him
stand out.
Well, I hope that you stand out in a good way.
You can stand out at school or work by doing a great job or being kind to other
people.
And those are good ways to stand out, and they might also help you fit in and
make friends.
Right. Well, Ariana doesn't worry about fitting in because she already has great
friends and family.
So if she doesn't feel comfortable somewhere, she doesn't really mind.
Because she fits in at home.
And that's a wonderful way to feel - to know that you are loved for who you are
and that your friends and family will be there for you.
With that kind of attitude, I'm sure Ariana will go very far.
And that's a great phrase to use, Carolyn: with that kind of something.
You could say with that kind of thinking, you will be very successful.
That means that you have a lot of good ideas.
Right. But you could also say with that kind of attitude, you won't get very
far.
That means that you have a bad attitude and need to change if you want to
succeed.
Well, Ariana has a great attitude.
And our lesson says that her star will shine brightly for years to come.
Now Carolyn, I know that Ariana is a TV star.
But what does it mean if her star shines brightly?
Great question.
Here "star" is being used to represent her life.
If her star shines brightly, that means that she has a very wonderful and
successful life.
Interesting. OK.
So she will be happy and successful because of her sweet attitude.
And since she is a famous person, saying that her star will shine brightly makes
sense because that means that she will be a successful, famous person.
Well, we've learned a lot about Ariana.
And right now it's time for us to learn something else with Steve and Ken in the
Information Cloud about charities.
Then we'll watch a review skit and join Linda for the Editor's Summary.
The word charity can have different meanings, depending on how we use it.
In our lesson today, it's used as a countable noun meaning a charitable
organization.
Now in this usage, a charity is an organization with a charitable purpose such
as helping the poor, healing the sick and advancing education.
Charity can also describe an event that raises money to help a charitable group,
like a charity run.
People who participate in the race aren't running to get money for themselves
but to make money for a special group like the visually challenged.
And you can have a charity bike ride or a charity bake sale.
Hmm. But to understand the true meaning of charity, we need to look at its
original definition.
And that is charity the practice.
If you practice charity, you are being generous and have the habit of giving.
And in Christianity, charity is another term for love, which refers to an
unlimited loving kindness toward all people.
It's often mentioned alongside faith and hope.
And finally, there's the idiom: charity begins at home.
It means that you should be generous to your family before helping others.
It's a good reminder to show love to those closest to you, and then to others.
For example, Jennifer spends hours cooking food for the poor but often forgets
about her own family.
She should remember that charity begins at home.
(Chinese).
Oh! Oh! Oh!
Are you Whitney Houston?
Uh, no.
Mariah Carey?
No. I'm Ariana Grande.
I knew it! You sing, act, you write songs and produce music.
You are a sweet and talented young star.
Oh, thank you.
Yes, I'm a happy 20-year-old.
Oh, so young, and yet you've done so much.
Yes. I was eight when I started performing, and I've never stopped.
You must be tired.
Oh, I am, but music is my passion.
And it's your career.
Broadway, TV, albums, you keep so busy.
Yes, but I still find time to care for others.
I helped start Kids Who Care when I was ten.
Ten? Wow! And they've raised a lot of money, right?
Yes, that's right.
And I even traveled to South Africa to help sick children.
You're so busy and so sweet.
You must have a lot of fans.
Oh, I do, and I stay in contact with them through Twitter, Instagram and
Facebook.
Wow! Well, please, don't let fame change you in a negative way just to fit in.
Oh, I won't.
I don't feel much pressure to fit in.
You don't?
No. I have good friends and a good family.
I'll always fit in at home.
With that attitude, your star will shine brightly for years.
Well, nice to meet you.
Goodbye, Whitney.
Um... no.
Mariah?
No! I'm Ariana Grande.
Right. I knew that.
Bye-bye.
Even though she has a packed schedule, Ariana cares for others.
At 10, she helped Kids Who Care, a youth singing group, get started.
The group helps raise funds for charity.
And she has also traveled to South Africa to perform for sick children.
She has millions of followers on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.
But none of this fame has changed her sweet personality.
Thank you, Linda.
I hope you've enjoyed joining us the past two days to learn about Ariana Grande.
And of course we always have more to learn right here at Studio Classroom.
See you next time.
