Hello, everyone. And welcome to Studio Classroom.
My name is Gabe.
And I'm Carolyn.
And your English will improve today.
We will be discussing Food Remedies today.
And what is a remedy?
It's relief or a cure for something.
It's healing of some kind.
Food doesn't just taste good, but it can help us with different kinds of
problems that we experience.
So let's get started with the first reading for today.
Open up your magazine to Food Remedies, and let's read together now.
Food Remedies.
Find solutions for your problems in certain foods and drinks.
We eat to satisfy our hunger and to provide necessary nutrition for our body,
but there are other reasons to reach for particular foods.
Research shows that there are times when certain foods may provide possible
solutions for various problems.
When you can't sleep:
Try a few almonds for a late-night snack.
Almonds contain magnesium, an essential nutrient that helps relax the muscles
and promote sleep.
When you have bad breath:
Drink a cup of black, green or oolong tea, which contains a compound that stops
the growth of the bacteria that causes bad breath.
(Chinese).
Thank you, Michelle.
Well, this is a very nutritional lesson indeed, and one with very good advice.
I think I'm going to try some of these things.
Oh? Why?
Do you have bad breath, Gabe?
Oh, I hope not.
I was actually thinking about the problem of not being able to sleep, Carolyn.
Ah. Well, let's discuss that in more detail in a minute.
For now, let's look at the word in our title: remedy.
As we mentioned earlier, it can be a cure for something.
So a food remedy is a food that helps cure or solve a problem.
Right. But this word is very interesting.
You can also say it after the thing that you want to cure.
For example, if you say you need a headache remedy, that means you need
something to cure you of your headache.
Ah. Or if you need a pain remedy, you are looking for something to make your
pain go away.
So what word is before remedy?
If it's negative, then we know you want to make it go away.
If it's positive, like food, then we know you will use it to make something else
go away.
And we can use food to make body problems go away.
Remedy can also be a verb.
You can use this word to talk about more than just body problems.
Right.
For example, let's say you own a business, and your business is losing more
money than it makes.
What can you do to remedy the problem?
How will you solve that problem?
Or maybe you really hurt somebody, and you need to remedy the situation by
apologizing to them.
Use "remedy" in many ways.
And we read that you can find solutions for your problems in certain foods and
drinks.
Now it's true that we eat for other reasons: to satisfy our hunger and to
provide necessary nutrition for our bodies.
Yes, we eat to live.
Hey, that reminds me of a fun question that people sometimes ask me: Do you eat
to live or live to eat?
If you eat to live, that means you eat just because you need to.
What does it mean to live to eat?
If you live to eat, that means you really enjoy eating and you can't wait for
your next meal.
When people say they live to eat, it usually doesn't mean that they are
overweight.
It just means that they love eating delicious food for more than the purpose of
surviving.
And most people are somewhere in between eating to live and living to eat.
For me, I like delicious food, but I don't think about it unless I'm hungry. So
I eat to live.
My sister, on the other hand, always talks about delicious food.
She lives to eat more than I do.
Well, what about you?
Do you eat to live or live to eat?
We read here that research shows that there are times when certain foods may
provide possible solutions for various problems.
And we face various problems or many different problems.
One problem some people face is that they can't sleep.
Well, that's not a problem.
It's great when you can sleep.
Oh, I said can't sleep.
Oh? It sounded like you said can.
You know, maybe it did.
And I think Steve and Ken have something to say about the words "can" and
"can't" in the Information Cloud.
OK, everyone, ready to fine-tune your English?
How good are you at distinguishing between the words can and can't?
These two words often sound exactly the same because people don't make the
effort to enunciate that T sound at the end of can't.
Of course the ability to correctly distinguish between these words is really
important.
It could save you from some serious misunderstandings.
So here are two ways to help you determine whether someone just said can or
can't.
OK. First, listen to the pronunciation.
Most Americans would pronounce can as if it was spelled k-en, as in I can do it.
I can do it.
But when saying can't, the short A is properly enunciated.
I can't do it.
I can do it.
I can't do it.
Hear the difference?
Secondly, in relation to the sentence's verb, can't will often receive more
emphasis than can.
For example, I can't play baseball. I can't play baseball.
And I can play baseball.
I can play baseball.
Hear the difference?
We should know, however, when can or can't fall at the end of a sentence, these
two tips don't apply.
Still we hope they help.
Friends, practice listening, and soon you'll be able to distinguish between can
and can't like a pro.
(Chinese).
Thanks, guys.
Well, what should you do if you can't sleep?
We read some advice here.
Try a few almonds for a late-night snack.
Really! Almonds?
Yeah. Do you need some?
No. I just thought that almonds did the opposite for us.
I thought almonds were good for giving you energy when you need it.
In fact, I eat almonds when I need to do some creative writing.
I think it does more for me than coffee does.
Well, food is interesting that way.
One thing may accomplish different purposes at different times.
For almonds, they give you energy when you need it, and help you sleep when you
need it.
Wow! I knew there was a reason I love almonds so much.
You should go advertise for an almond company.
Yeah, I should.
Not right now... Let's talk about that phrase: late-night snack.
It makes me think of midnight snacks.
Do you ever have midnight snacks, Gabe?
Yeah, I do.
Sometimes I get hungry late at tonight, but not always at midnight, Carolyn.
Well, a midnight snack isn't always eaten at 12 midnight.
It could mean a snack you have late at night or after midnight sometimes.
So late-night snack could also be called a midnight snack.
Well, we see another issue here that some people have: bad breath.
Do you have bad breath?
If you do, perhaps you need to drink more tea.
Black, green or oolong tea can help to fight bad breath.
I did not know that.
Well, there's a certain kind of bacteria that causes bad breath.
The tea contains a compound that stops the growth of that bacteria.
So if you have bad breath, drink more tea.
And of course we have more to learn about Food Remediesright after this.
