Hello again.
Today we are learning about some food remedies for common problems that people
face.
So far we've talked about how almonds can help if you can't sleep, and how
black, green or oolong tea is good for getting rid of bad breath.
Speaking of bad breath, if your friend had bad breath, would you tell him?
It can be hard to know how to tell a friend about that problem.
Hi, Carolyn.
Is that oolong tea? For me?
That's nice. Thanks.
Mmhm, very nice.
Well, let's get started with the next part of our program.
Food Remedies.
When you feel irritable:
Reach for a chocolate bar!
Chocolate makes most people happy, not only because it tastes good,
but also because it increases the production of serotonin, which affects
peoples' moods.
When you have joint pain:
Eat strawberries, oranges or other foods loaded with vitamin C.
Eating two oranges daily gives you 120 milligrams of vitamin C, which may help
slow the wear and tear on your joints.
When you don't have much energy:
Drink ample amounts of water.
When you don't drink enough water, oxygen and nutrients can't reach your brain
in an efficient manner, leaving you tired and less able to concentrate.
The next time you have a problem, remember to check your kitchen first for a
solution.
(Chinese).
And now let's go to the teachers.
Thank you, Michelle.
The first issue we see in this section is when we feel irritable.
Now if you are irritable, that means you get irritated easily or you become
upset easily.
OK, Carolyn, can you just stop talking?
Whoa! Gabe, what's going on?
I don't know, I just... I really don't like noise right now.
And all of this English is just giving me a headache.
So... Gabe, you seem really irritable right now.
I know what you need - chocolate!
Huh? But I am not irritable.
Here. Just... just eat this.
Carolyn, I'm not... listen, I'm not...
What happened?
I'm happy again!
That, my friend, is the magic of chocolate.
I feel like I just woke up from a bad dream.
I feel like... I feel like a nice, big bowl of flowers.
Well, the reason you feel like a bowl of flowers is because chocolate increases
your body's production of serotonin, which affects your mood.
I like serotonin.
Well, it's not a word we use every day, but yes, serotonin can make us happier.
OK, let's look at some other English from that section.
Reach for a chocolate bar.
Of course when you reach for something, you are using your arms and hands to
grab something.
Yes. But "reach for" can also simply mean to try to attain your goal.
If your goal is that chocolate bar, then reach for the chocolate bar.
If your goal is to get 100 percent on your test, you will try to reach for a
high score.
Some people say: Reach for the stars.
That means dream big and try your best to achieve your dream.
And if you can't reach for the stars, you can at least reach for a chocolate bar
to make you feel better.
Now we read about another issue here: joint pain.
Your joints are where two bones connect.
Some people have joint pain.
One condition that some people have is arthritis, where some of their joints are
inflamed and it causes them a lot of pain.
Do you or anyone you know have arthritis?
Did you know that strawberries can help?
Right. Actually, anything loaded with vitamin C can help.
If something is loaded with vitamin C, that means there's a lot of vitamin C
inside.
How else can we use that phrase?
Maybe a meal is loaded with calories.
That hamburger meal is loaded with lots of calories, so I'm going to eat
something lighter with fewer calories.
Or my bag is loaded with chocolate bars.
So whenever I get irritable, I can just reach for a chocolate bar.
Or if you're a busy student, you could say: My schedule is loaded with classes.
I have no time to relax.
Well, we don't want you to feel overloaded with homework.
You do need time to rest.
But back to joint pain, if you experience that or arthritis, you should eat
plenty of vitamin C.
This may help slow the wear and tear on your joints.
And I like that phrase there: wear and tear.
Let's learn something more about that with Liz in the Grammar Gym.
Hello there, friends.
My name is Liz. And thanks for joining me here at the Grammar Gym.
Here's our Grammar Tip sentence for today:
Eating two oranges daily gives you 120 milligrams of vitamin C, which may help
slow the wear and tear on your joints.
Our focus today is on the phrase: wear and tear.
This phrase is an expression native speakers use to talk about the kind of
damage that happens to a thing when that thing is being used a lot.
In the case of today's sentence, the writer is talking about how if you use your
joints a lot,
the damages that happen actually to your joints can be slowed down by 120
milligrams of vitamin C.
We can use "wear and tear" to describe the damages that can be found on all
sorts of things, especially things we wear like shoes.
For example: After seeing the wear and tear on his shoes, Scott knew he needed
higher quality shoes.
We can also use "wear and tear" to describe relationship problems.
For example:
Mr. and Mrs. Lee got some counseling after they realized there was some
emotional wear and tear in their relationship.
And that's all the time we have for today.
Be sure to check out today's Grammar Tip section for more examples.
This is Liz from the Grammar Gym.
See you next time.
Thank you, Liz.
Well, we do hope that you have enough energy for a review skit, and then of
course the Editor's Summary.
If you need a little bit more energy, maybe you can reach for a chocolate bar or
some almonds.
You can snack on those while we enjoy these next features.
Here we go.
What are you doing?
Doing what? What do you mean?
Why are you eating?
Everybody eats.
Food provides nutrition.
And besides, I'm hungry.
But did you know that certain foods also provide solutions for various problems?
Eating can solve problems?
Yes.
Do you have trouble sleeping?
Well...
Try a few almonds for a late-night snack.
Almonds, huh?
Yes. They relax the muscles and promote sleep.
I'll give it a try.
What should you do for bad breath?
Hmm, brush your teeth?
You can also drink tea.
Tea?
Yes. Tea contains a compound that stops bacteria.
I had no idea.
Strawberries and oranges can help joint pain, too.
Really!
Yes. They're loaded with vitamin C, which slows down the wear and tear on your
joints.
That's good to know.
And drinking ample water is good, too.
Water, huh?
Yeah. It helps your brain, so you won't be so tired.
You'll be able to concentrate.
OK, so the right food is important for everyone.
Yes. Now let's see, can I have some of your food?
In today's lesson we see that besides giving us nutrition, certain foods may
help with some problems we may be having.
For example, eat some almonds if you can't sleep.
Of if you're feeling irritable, have chocolate.
And did you know that if you feel like you are running out of energy, maybe a
glass of water is just the thing?
There are various kinds of nutrients in foods that help different conditions.
So check it out.
Thank you, Linda.
Well, today's lesson has been a simple one, but it's very helpful.
Do you suffer from any of the problems mentioned above?
I hope not.
But if you do, there are remedies in food.
So don't go directly to the hospital.
First, check what's in your kitchen.
And we hope that you come back next time for another lesson right here at Studio
Classroom.
