Hello, everyone, and welcome to Studio Classroom.
My name is Gabe.
And my name is Carolyn.
Yesterday we talked about spring, the warmth and sweetness of the season reminds
us to never give up hope.
And this is an important thing to remember but it's not always easy, especially
if you are suffering from depression.
I hope that you remember that after hard times, there is always a spring, a time
of beauty and growth.
Keep this thought in mind as we begin the third part of our series on
Depression: Walking Out of Darkness.
So open up your magazines and let's begin.
(Music).
Depression Part 3: Walking Out of Darkness.
Daily steps on the road to healing.
At one point, the shadow of depression hung over me almost constantly.
My moments of happiness became fewer and fewer.
Finally, I decided to seek help.
I began meeting with a counselor regularly.
She helped me realize that negative thoughts and wrong interpretations of
people's words and actions added to my depression.
For example, if someone refused an invitation from me, I wrongly assumed they
didn't really like me.
Once I recognized these wrong ideas, I could stop them.
(Music).
Hi, everyone. I'm Michelle.
(Chinese).
Thank you so much, Michelle.
Well, I'm glad that we are learning in our lesson today about walking out of
darkness or overcoming depression.
Yes. It is very encouraging.
At the very beginning near the title, we see: Daily steps on the road to
healing.
Now we've talked about the road to healing before.
We have.
And here we can see that you can't travel the road to healing quickly.
It takes a little bit of effort every day, daily steps.
You walk a little bit further each day.
Some days it might seem like you aren't making any progress, and it is too
difficult to continue walking.
But don't give up.
Take small steps every day until you come out of the darkness that is created by
depression.
And that is important to remember.
Now the next... or the text of the article opens with a phrase: at one point.
This is a good phrase to know when you want to talk about a certain time without
being very specific.
Right.
So what this phrase means is at one point in time or at some point in the past,
but you don't give a lot of details about when exactly that time occurred.
So you could say: I learned about the Great Depression at one point, but now I
don't remember much about it.
So you learned about it before, but you don't remember when, and you may have
forgotten some of the details.
You could also say: At one point, I thought about living in Europe, but that
never happened.
So we use this phrase to show that something was true in the past but it is not
true anymore.
And this is good news for people who suffered from depression at one point.
If it was at one point, that means it was in the past, and is no longer a
problem or at least not as bad.
Right. And that is great news.
No one wants to have negative thoughts all the time.
And let's look at those words: negative thought.
What is a negative thought, Gabe?
Well, it's exactly what it sounds like, a bad thought.
So if you have ideas that aren't happy or positive, you could call them negative
thoughts.
This could include many different emotions like sadness, anger and
disappointment.
And we know that our thoughts have a big impact on our actions.
If we have negative thoughts, then we aren't going to feel happy, and we will be
less likely to do well in life.
If you constantly think that people don't like you, then it will be hard for you
to make friends and discover that you are a very likable person.
Right.
But if you like yourself and think positive thoughts about yourself, your life
and the things that you do, you are more likely to make friends and be
successful.
Well, wrong interpretations of people's words and actions can add to a person's
depression.
And Liz wants to tell us more about that sentence in the Grammar Gym.
So let's join her now.
Hi there, friends.
Welcome to the Grammar Gym.
My name is Liz.
Here's today's Grammar Tip sentence from today's lesson:
... negative thoughts and wrong interpretations of people's words and actions
added to my depression.
Another way to say this would be: negative thoughts and wrong interpretations of
people's words and actions made my depression worse.
But in today's sentence, the writer uses the phrase added to.
So here's the pattern from today's sentence:
[Something 1] and [something 2] added to [something else].
For example:
Sara's boss' criticisms and her co-workers' lack of support added to her
dissatisfaction with her work.
We can also use this sentence pattern to talk about positive things.
For example: The balloons and lively music added to the party atmosphere.
Now it's your turn.
Think of two things that either make something better or worse, and practice
using this pattern.
And if you turn to today's Grammar Tip section in your Studio Classroom
magazine, you'll find more example sentences there.
That's it for today.
This is Liz from the Grammar Gym.
See you next time.
Thank you, Liz.
Now in our lesson we see a good example of how negative thoughts and wrong
interpretations can add to depression.
And we see a good phrase: wrongly assume.
If you assume something, that means you think something is true but you don't
really have any proof.
No one has told you that it is true but you believe it.
Sometimes you can assume things correctly.
But you can also wrongly assume things, which means that you thought something
was true but it isn't.
And our author wrongly assumed that people didn't like her just because they
didn't accept her invitation.
This can be a very common experience.
How many times have you made plans to do something, invited someone to go with
you, and that person told you no?
It happens all the time.
But usually it's because the other person is busy.
They have to work, study or maybe they already had plans.
Maybe they really don't want to... or maybe they really do want to go but they
don't have enough money.
There are a lot of reasons that they might refuse the invitation.
But if you wrongly assume that they refused your invitation because they don't
like you, that can result in very negative feelings about yourself.
And if those feelings aren't controlled, they can turn into something serious
like depression.
Well, I hope that you do not wrongly assume anything.
Try to get proof that something is true before you believe it.
Don't simply assume that it is true.
Good advice.
Well, once our author realized that her ideas weren't right, she could stop
them.
And that's a great sentence pattern for us to look at: once I could [something]
I could [something else].
For example, once I finished my homework, I could play computer games.
Or once I wash the dishes, I could relax and watch TV.
So this pattern is used to show that something needs to be done first.
After that first thing is done, you can do something else.
And the second thing is usually better than the first thing.
Right.
You could also say: Once I confirmed the time with my friends, I could make the
restaurant reservation.
Well, the next session... and the next section in our lesson is called Managing
depression.
We will learn a lot of different things that you can do to keep depression under
control.
Oh. Before we start discussing that section of the lesson, let's look at the
phrase you just used: under control.
What does it mean if something is under control, Gabe?
Well, that means something is being dealt with or that something is being
limited successfully.
For example, you can keep a fire under control.
That means that you limit where the fire can go so that it doesn't damage
anything.
You could also keep your emotions under control.
That means that if you are feeling a strong emotion like anger, you don't let it
take over.
You are able to keep calm.
So if you keep depression under control, that means that you limit the way
depression affects your life.
You don't allow it to take control or take over.
You stay in control.
And that is the goal in managing depression: to stay in control and not allow
depression to rule your life.
Well, we still have a lot to learn from our lesson right afterthis.
