Welcome back.
Today we are continuing our lesson on depression, and we are talking about
walking out of darkness.
It is important to seek help and not allow negative thoughts to control our
lives.
We shouldn't wrongly assume things.
And if we do, we should find a way to recognize those wrong thoughts and work to
stop them.
Let's continue learning with the next part of our lesson on Managing depression.
(Music).
Depression Part 3: Walking Out of Darkness.
Managing depression.
Physical health affects your mood, so eat a healthy diet, and exercise
regularly.
Choose an enjoyable exercise that won't increase your stress.
Get enough sleep.
If your depression interferes with sleep, go to bed and get up at regular times,
and limit your caffeine consumption.
Participate in activities, even when you don't feel like it.
This will take your mind off your depression and give you a sense of
accomplishment.
Share your feelings with someone you trust.
Have realistic expectations for yourself.
Focus on your successes, not on mistakes or problems.
(Music).
(Chinese).
And now let's go to our teachers.
Thank you so much, Michelle.
Now our first point on managing depression mentions eating a healthy diet.
And Steve and Ken want to tell us more about diets and dieting in the
Information Cloud.
So let's join them now.
The word "diet" is seen and heard a lot these days.
Many people go on a diet because they would like to lose weight.
But be careful with this word.
Diet is the food we eat.
If we eat a healthy diet, we're eating food that's nutritious and good for us.
If we watch our diet, we're careful about the kinds of food we eat.
Only when we say "go on a diet" does diet mean to limit the amount of food we
eat or eat only specific foods.
And when we want to lose weight, a lot of us choose to go on a diet.
And when we say someone is going on a diet, we're saying that person is starting
to diet properly.
But if a person is on a diet, he or she is maintaining a diet.
Right. There's a slight difference.
Also notice that diet can be used as a verb.
To diet is to eat only certain kinds of food to lose weight.
A lot of people have to diet to stay slim.
(Chinese).
Thank you, gentlemen.
We shouldn't just go on a diet to lose weight.
We should try to have a healthy diet all the time.
And having a healthy diet can help improve your mood.
If you are healthy, it is easier to be happy because you have fewer concerns
about your body.
Another important part of being healthy is to exercise.
Yes, exercise is very important.
Something else that is important, though, is the type of exercise.
If you decide that you are going to run every day but you hate running, you
aren't going to look forward to exercising.
So you should pick exercises that you enjoy.
If you don't like running, maybe you could try biking or swimming.
There are so many great ways to exercise.
You just need to find some that you enjoy.
Right. The point of exercising should be to make you happier and healthier, not
make you more stressed.
And doing an exercise that you enjoy is a great way to relieve stress.
It sure is.
Another thing you can do to help manage your depression is go to bed and get up
at regular times.
So you set a schedule for your sleep time and stick to it.
That is a good phrase, Carolyn, to stick to something.
If you stick to something, that means that you are not going to give up.
You continue to work on it until you finish.
So you could stick to studying a language.
Don't give up when it gets difficult.
Stick to it and continue trying to learn.
Once you get past that challenge, you will be very proud of yourself.
Yes, you will.
You can also say: I need to stick to my commitment.
I promise to do something, and I need to stick to... my promise.
It's very important to stick to your promises.
That way, people will know that they can trust you.
Right.
Well, we should stick to our lesson and continue talking about ways to manage
depression.
The article mentions five major ways to help manage depression, but these aren't
the only things you can do.
This is true.
There are many other things that you can do to manage depression.
One simple thing you can do is prioritize.
That means that you decide what things are the most important and do them first.
So you may need to prioritize tasks every day.
For example, you can prioritize which homework assignments you will do.
Maybe you have too much homework and you know you can't get it all done, so you
do the most important assignments first.
Or if you have a long list of things that you need to do at work, you can decide
which ones are the most important, which ones need to get done first.
You can make these tasks a priority and ignore other things until those tasks
are done.
So what are some things that you need to prioritize, or what are some things
that you prioritize?
Do you make your family a priority?
Or is work or school the priority in your life?
Talk about that in English.
Great.
Another thing you can do when you are facing depression that isn't in our
article is to postpone or delay important decisions.
Some decisions are very serious, and you should wait until you have the
depression under control before making a final decision.
One thing that doctors recommend people wait to decide is divorce.
Divorce is a very serious situation, and people should not give up on their
marriage due to depression.
Doctors recommend that you talk to other people about these major decisions so
that you can have a better idea of what is really going on.
You want to avoid negative thoughts and wrongly assuming things.
OK. So if you are going to make a very big decision in your life but you are
suffering from depression, take some time to think about that big decision.
Another example of a big decision is maybe making a big purchase or buying
something very expensive, spending a lot of money on something.
You want to take some time to consider it before you make that purchase.
Well, right now what's the time for us to do, Carolyn?
Well, you made some very good points, Gabe.
And right now it is time for us to review our lesson with Linda in the Editor's
Summary.
So let's join her now.
Today our writer gives us some good tips for managing depression.
With the help of her counselor, she realized that she was making some wrong
assumptions and she should look carefully at things.
More tips she gives are to eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly.
Go out and do things even if you don't feel like it.
Share your feelings with someone you trust, and focus on your successes and not
your failures.
These are just a few of the tips to offer hope in this kind of situation.
Thank you, Linda.
Well, we've had a great lesson about walking out of the darkness of depression.
We hope that this lesson has been helpful for you in getting a better
understanding of this illness.
We've spent a lot of time talking about depression over the past three months
because it is a serious illness that many people suffer from.
So it's important to understand it.
And something I really liked about today's lesson was the point about not
wrongly assuming something.
I understood what our author was writing about when she wrote about inviting
people over but then they refused.
There are reasons people refuse.
Sometimes I also get a little bit sad if someone refuses an invitation, but I
shouldn't wrongly assume.
Well, tomorrow is the first day of spring, and we leave the dark cold winter
behind, so.
Join us again tomorrow as we learn how we can respond to people with depression.
We'll see you then right here at Studio Classroom.
