Thank you for joining us as we continue our lesson on Sri Lanka.
Today we learned that this island is a shopping heaven or a shopper's paradise.
You can find just about anything here.
Do you want to try local fruit, vegetables, fish, snacks or spices?
Then head to the Pettah Bazaar in Colombo, the island's capital.
There are so many things to buy.
Now let's continue with the next section and learn about how to relax.
(Music).
Sri Lanka.
Relax.
It's time to relax after a long, busy day.
Why not check out one of Sri Lanka's beautiful beaches?
Head south to find Unawatuna Beach.
It's known for its calm waters and cafes beside the beach.
Or go farther to discover Mirissa Beach, a quieter spot.
Haven't had enough adventure?
Mirissa is also the place to go in search of a blue whale.
There's no limit to the things you can see and do in Sri Lanka.
Take time to enjoy them all!
All right.
(Chinese).
And now let's go to our teachers.
Thank you, Michelle.
Well, we've done a lot in Sri Lanka.
I mean, we've learned a lot about this island, and now it's time to relax.
And since this is a beautiful tropical island, relaxing shouldn't be too
difficult.
But if you spend all of your time going out to see, do, eat and buy, you
definitely want to make time to relax.
After all, it's not a real vacation if you don't have some downtime.
Now that's an interesting word, Gabe.
What does downtime mean?
Well, this word is used to talk about the time when you can relax and not worry
about doing work or other activities.
It's important to make time for downtime.
I agree. So you could say:
After finishing all of her exams, Sara took some downtime and watched movies for
two days.
She relaxed by watching movies after all of the stress of taking exams.
So for different people, downtime can mean different things.
Maybe you relax by watching movies, playing games, spending time with friends or
traveling.
And there are many ways that you can spend your downtime.
The most important thing, though, is that it is relaxing.
You should feel like you have more energy after your downtime, not less.
You are right, Carolyn.
Sometimes we take vacations but feel even more tired after the vacation because
we spend so much of our time going places,
doing activities, trying new things and shopping, and we forget about relaxing.
But at the end of the day, everyone needs to have some time to relax.
So what does our lesson recommend we do to relax in Sri Lanka?
Go to the beach, of course!
And we can head south or go south to one of the many beaches on the island.
Of course some beaches are more popular than others and could be a little bit
crowded.
But you can try going to one of the less popular beaches if you want a quieter
place to relax,
although you might also enjoy the cafes and beautiful scenery at the more
popular beach areas.
Well, that's true, too.
But if you truly want to relax, you might consider staying at a special beach
resort.
And a resort is a place that people go to relax or to participate in a certain
activity.
For example, many people like to go to ski resorts in the winter.
Those resorts are specially designed to allow people to enjoy beautiful ski
slopes and relax during the winter months.
While some people might like snow and enjoy going to a ski resort, other people
like the beach and warm weather.
If that's you, you can go to a beach resort.
And Sri Lanka has many wonderful beach resorts that specialize in different
things.
Some of them are very affordable while others are quite expensive.
One resort I saw offered yoga and surfing lessons to its guests.
Now that would be a great place to relax.
Well, once you've finished relaxing, you might be ready for another adventure.
If that's true, you could go whale-watching.
Whale watching is a special activity where you take a boat out into the ocean
and search for whales.
And there are a lot of places around the world that are great for whale
watching.
Canada, Hawaii and Alaska all are for great whale-watching opportunities if you
go at the right time of the year.
Now something very special about whale watching in Sri Lanka is that you can see
blue whales.
Now we want to spend some time with Liz in the Grammar Gym.
She has something she wants to share with us.
Hello, friends.
How are you doing today?
My name is Liz.
And thanks for joining me here at the Grammar Gym.
Here's our Grammar Tip sentence from today's lesson.
Mirissa is also the place to go in search of a blue whale.
Our focus today is on the phrase: in search of.
It's a fancier or a nicer way of saying looking for.
So what the writer is saying is if you want to go look for a blue whale, Mirissa
is the place to go.
Use "in search of" when you're describing, in a formal situation, what a person
or a group of people are looking for usually in a very big place.
For example, maybe on a travel show, you might hear:
Helen travels a lot, so she is always in search of the best coffee available
wherever she goes.
Or, on a history program on TV, you might see this:
The team of scientists are in search for clues as to what had happened to the
old abandoned city in the mountains.
So friends, give this phrase a try.
Think of something that people are looking for, and practice using this phrase.
And if you want to see some more example sentences, then check out today's
Grammar Tip section in your Studio Classroom magazine.
That's it for today.
This is Liz from the Grammar Gym.
I'll see you next time.
Thank you, Liz.
Well, there is certainly no limit to the number of things you can do and see
when you visit Sri Lanka.
And there is no limit to the things that you can learn here at Studio Classroom.
Now let's take some time to enjoy a review skit.
Then we'll join Linda for the Editor's Summary.
Let's do that now.
Ah, Sri Lanka.
This is an island of endless possibilities.
Yes. And now, it's time to relax, after a very busy day.
Busy day? Oh, you're right about that.
The jungle here covers the mountains.
And we were there.
White sandy beaches stretch for miles.
And we were there.
Century-old churches and other old buildings.
Yes, we were there.
The ancient cities and the National Museum.
We were there, too.
I really enjoyed the cricket match.
It's the most popular sport here in Sri Lanka.
I enjoyed the biking, especially through the hill country.
I loved those tea plantations.
Me, too.
And the jungle safari was amazing.
I got a glimpse of so many wild animals.
Yeah. Oh, what about the old villages?
They were great.
We learned about the local culture.
Yes. And don't forget...
The food.
I really loved all those spicy meals, curries, fishes and bread... oh.
And don't forget...
The shopping.
Oh, Sri Lanka is shopping heaven.
I love that bazaar.
Each street sells something different, spices, jewelry and more.
Oh, and high-end shopping, too.
Crafts, clothes and much, much more.
We found everything we were looking for.
Yes, we did.
Well, we've had enough adventure for one day.
Right. And now it's finally time to sit and relax.
Yes.
Oh, no.
Wait, we can't relax.
We have to search for the blue whales.
The blue whales! Let's go.
Let's go.
You can't leave Sri Lanka without visiting one of the many street bazaars.
The Pettah Bazaar sells everything you can think of.
And if you want something a little nicer, there are also high-end shopping areas
all over.
And we mentioned beaches on the first day, so don't forget to check out the
Unawatuna Beach.
Or relax or search for a blue whale in the Mirissa Beach area.
You know, I think I want to go.
Thank you, Linda.
So Carolyn, we've spent the last three days learning about Sri Lanka.
What was your favorite part of the lesson?
Well, I love nature, so being able to take a bike tour through the hill country
and see the native wildlife or going on a whale tour would be great.
Well, I think that is a wonderful thing to do.
And I am interested in whale watching as well.
That's something that I would like to do if I visit Sri Lanka, especially to see
that big blue whale, the biggest animal in the world.
That would be pretty amazing.
And you know, I wouldn't mind going shopping and trying some of the food...
I know.
Maybe going to UNESCO World Heritage Sites, you know.
Too many things to see.
There are really so many things to see.
We could have spent more than three days talking about Sri Lanka.
So be sure you do get a chance to visit sometime.
Well, thank you for joining us here today.
And we'll see you next time right here at Studio Classroom.
See you then.
