Welcome back.
You are joining us for our final lesson in March on Cutting-Edge Clothing.
Earlier we learned that fashion designers had been using 3-D printers to make
clothes for the runway since 2010.
Now that 3-D printers are gaining in popularity, more and more designers are
starting to use them to create their collections.
That's what's happening in the professional fashion world.
But what about the amateurs?
Let's learn about them now in the next section - Design your own.
(Music).

Design your own.
But professionals aren't the only ones designing 3-D printed clothing.
The company Continuum allows anyone with an Internet connection to design
dresses, shoes and bathing suits.
The company then prints out the material according to the design, sews it
together and sends the finished product to the customer.
3-D printed clothing is still quite expensive, and the technology to create it
is still developing.
But soon you might be creating - and wearing - your own fashion masterpieces.
You may even buy a 3-D printer and create clothing in the comfort of your home.
In the words of Continuum founder Mary Huang, "Everyone has access to
creativity.".

And now let's get back to our teachers.

There is so much potential for 3-D fashion, and professionals aren't the only
ones designing these clothes.
You're right, Gabe.
And we want to look at that phrase: not the only one.
This is just a useful phrase to know.
The meaning is very clear.
If you are not the only one, that means you are not alone.
There are other people like you.
Or if something isn't the only one, then there are other things like it.
Here is an example to use this to talk about people.
Perhaps someone says that they are very stressed because of all the work they
need to get done.
If you feel the same way, you could say: You're not the only one.
That lets the other person know that they are not alone in the way they feel.
And that can be very helpful in comforting people.
But you want to be careful how you use this phrase.
If you say it with a negative tone, "You're not the only one," then the person
will think that you are making fun of them.
And that's not a nice thing to do.
Now Gabe, can you give us an example using an object?
Sure.
I ate the most delicious cookie last night.
But don't worry, it wasn't the only one.
There are still more cookies for everyone to try.
Oh, that's very nice of you, Gabe.
I know.
So there was more than one cookie.
And maybe the cookie you ate last night wasn't the only one.
Yes, maybe I ate a few more.
Maybe that's true.
But back to our lesson.
We learn some very interesting things about how people are using 3-D printers to
design their own clothing.
This is very interesting.
There is an online company that allows you to design dresses, bathing suits and
shoes.
Entering your size measurements, and then they print out your clothes, put them
together and send them to you.
That is so cool, talk about custom-made.
That's a great idea, Gabe.
Let's talk about custom-made.
If something is custom-made, that means that it is specifically made for an
individual person.
Some men like to buy custom-made suits because they fit perfectly.
Well, if it is made just for you and no one else, then it should fit perfectly.
You could also have other things that are custom-made, like computers.
If you have specific computing needs, you could order a custom-made or
custom-built computer.
You could also get a custom-made musical instrument, like a custom-made guitar.
That means that it was made specifically for a certain person or purpose.
And if you want custom-made clothes, you can order them online.
However, it won't be cheap.
3-D clothing... or 3-D printed clothing is still pretty expensive.
Especially if you want 3-D printed fashion from top designers.
But even the design-your-own option is quite expensive.
A simple bathing suit could be over $200.
All right. Well, now it's time for us to join Liz in the Grammar Gym.

In today's lesson we see this sentence:
You may even buy a 3-D printer and create clothing in the comfort of your home.
That's our Grammar Tip sentence.
And our focus today is on the phrase at the end of the sentence: in the comfort
of your home.
It's an expression native speakers use to talk about being at home and enjoy the
privacy and freedom to do whatever you want.
So in the case of today's sentence, the writer is saying that it's possible to
buy a 3-D printer and create clothing with freedom and privacy at home.
Here are some more example sentences.
Would you rather go to a theater and enjoy a movie on a big screen or watch a
DVD in the comfort of your home?
Or: Online shopping has grown popular because many people prefer looking and
buying things in the comfort of their homes.
So give this phrase a try.
What is something that is far easier to do at home, and practice talking about
using this phrase.

At the end of our lesson, we see the phrase: in the words of.
This is helpful to know when you want to quote what someone says.
So you could say: In the words of Albert Einstein, a person who never made a
mistake never tried anything new.
Because I used the phrase "in the words of" at the beginning, you know that I am
quoting someone else.
Right. So those aren't your words, those are Einstein's.

I don't believe it.

Well, you design the clothing on a computer.
And?
And you input someone's measurements.

Transmit the pattern to a 3-D printer.

Well, it's not.

Well, the technology is still developing.

Oh, that's too bad.
Yes. But one day I will buy a 3-D printer, and I'll create clothing in the
comfort of my own home.
And... and become a fashion designer?

I can't believe it.
We've been hearing a lot about 3-D printing, and today we find out that it is
even gone into the fashion industry.
3-D fashions were found on the runway back in 2010.
Many say they look like they came out of science fiction.
But now it is not only professionals that are 3-D fashion designers, but anyone
with an Internet connection can join in.
It is still pretty expensive, and the technology is still developing.
But who knows what the future holds?
We may all be designing our own clothes sooner than we think.
