Hello, again.
Well, today we're learning more about awesome winter festivals around the world.
So far we've discussed the Holemenkollen Ski Festival in Norway.
Do you like skiing?
Then maybe this is for you.
You can ski or just be an enthusiastic spectator next to this 60-meter high
jump.
Well, we have another great winter festival to talk about now: the Snow Village
in Finland.
So let's go and read something about it first.
And then we'll spend time with Michelle in the Language Lab.
(Music).
The World's Best Winter Festivals.
Snow Village.
In December Finland created its 13th annual Snow Village, which will remain open
until April, or even later, if the weather permits!
Snow Village lies nearly 200 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle.
The village is designed and assembled by builders skilled in working with snow
and ice.
Visitors can take a tour of the village, eat in a restaurant made of ice or go
dancing in the disco igloo.
They can also spend the night in a hotel made of snow.
There's even an ice chapel for couples who want to get married in Snow Village.
If you can't get to one of these festivals, check out the winter activities in
your own area.
(Music).
OK.
(Chinese).
And now let's go to our lesson.
Thanks, Michelle.
Well, now we're learning about the last of the best winter festivals in our
lesson: the Snow Village in Finland.
And if you want to travel sometime soon but you're not sure where yet, this
festival will remain open until April.
So maybe you can go to Finland.
Not a bad idea.
The festival will remain open until April, or even later, if the weather
permits.
The weather needs to be cold enough for this snow to survive, of course.
We could also say if the weather allows.
And actually this phrase reminds me of a Christmas song.
Have you heard of this?
Have yourself a merry little Christmas...
Uh... what part of the song, Gabe?
Oh. Later in the song it says, um: Someday soon we all will be together if the
Lord allows.
Oh, yes. I remember now.
So we use phrases like "if the weather permits" or "if the Lord allows" to talk
about things we hope will happen in the future but we're not sure.
Well, we read here that Snow Village lies nearly 200 kilometers north of the
Arctic Circle.
That's right.
And we have a little globe here.
This lies in a place called Lapland, which is in Finland.
It lies there, which means it is located there, just 200 kilometers north of the
Arctic Circle.
We can use the word "lie" to talk about a place, uh, here on Earth.
You can use a map or a globe like this.
It lies here.
That's right.
And that place is 200 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle, so it's way up
there.
And we do have a globe here, so Snow Village would be right about here because
there's Lapland.
I found it.
Yep. There it is.
There is Lapland in Finland.
See if you can find it on a globe or a map at home.
Well, Lapland is there, and that is where the Snow Village is.
Now we read that the village is designed and assembled by skilled builders.
They put the village together to make it what it is.
And they start in November, with lots of snow to work with.
That's right.
Over 1,000 truckloads of snow are brought in for them to make the village with.
If you have a chance to visit, you'll get to see all kinds of icy buildings from
restaurants to discos.
Whoa... a disco in an ice building?
Yes, a disco igloo, as a matter of fact.
Have you ever been inside an igloo, Gabe?
Uh, no. I mean, not yet, anyway.
It sounds really cold.
I find it amazing that people can stay warm inside of something made of ice and
snow.
But then again, lots of things are possible.
Well, igloos come in all shapes and sizes.
And many people actually live in them for months at a time.
You know, I would like to check out this igloo, this disco igloo, if I ever get
the chance.
And you could spend the night in a hotel made of snow.
Imagine that!
Actually, this whole place sounds really cool.
Cool, or cold!
There's even an ice chapel in this village.
Now a chapel is a building for religious services and is usually smaller than a
church building.
Well, I think right now it's time for us to enjoy a review skit.
And of course, then we'll enjoy the Editor's Summary with Linda.
Winter's here, and you know what that means.
Yeah, bracing ourselves for the cold weeks ahead.
Coats and mittens and...
And in some cities winter is the hottest season of all.
Really?
Yes. So let's travel somewhere that's awesome.
Like Harbin in northeast China.
Harbin?
Yeah. Tourists flock there to experience the famous Ice and Snow Sculpture
Festival.
Really?
Yeah. It has elaborate sculptures illuminated with colored lights and indoor ice
and snow art museum, sports competitions and fairs.
Oh, there is plenty to see.
But I was thinking about going...
Japan! Of course!
Every year 2 million people enjoy the winter festivities there.
Oh, it's internationally renowned.
Really!
Yes. And they have snow sculpturing. It's a contest.
It draws competitors from all over the world.
There's snowshoeing and ice skating and...
But I... I was thinking about somewhere else.
Of course! Carnaval de Quebec.
Huh?
Canada has lots of ice and snow.
And the festival's mascot is a cheerful snowman.
There's an ice palace. Oh, and sleigh rides.
Oh, and spas!
No. I was thinking how about...
The Ski Festival in Norway with huge jumping hill, 30,000... 30,000 enthusiastic
spectators watch a handful of valiant skiers.
No.
Finland? Uh, Snow Village?
Just north of the Arctic Circle, you can eat at a restaurant made of ice.
Oh, and dance at a disco igloo.
No, no, no! I'm not thinking of any of those places.
You're not? Well, then where in the world are you thinking?
I'm thinking of Hawaii.
Oh, Hawaii.
Aloha.
Yeah.
We are going way north to Norway and Finland today.
Both countries host snow activities.
In Oslo, Norway, visitors will find the oldest ski museum in the world right
under the ski jump,
where the International Ski Federation Nordic Skiing World Cup is held.
While in Finland, visitors can tour Snow Village, which is located north of the
Arctic Circle.
Talk about being at the top of the world and in winter!
There is a restaurant, a hotel and a disco.
And there's even a chapel for couples who want to get married there.
Who says snow isn't fun?
Thank you very much, Linda.
Well, Carolyn, which one of these winter festivals would you like to visit most?
Well, they all sound really cool... or cold.
But uh, I think I really like to go to Harbin.
I've heard very good things about it.
You know, I'd like to travel there as well.
But I'd like to go see all of these places.
I really would like to go and check out an igloo for once in my life.
That would be cool... and cold.
Well, thank you for joining us.
And we'll see you next time right here at Studio Classroom.
See you then.
