Hello, and welcome to Studio Classroom.
My name is Gabe.
And I'm Carolyn.
And your English will improve today, and so will your hockey skills.
We're going to talk all about the popular sport - hockey.
Carolyn, have you ever played hockey before?
Oh, sure. I often play that at the arcades.
You play against one other person on a big table.
And this table blows air out of tiny holes on the surface.
And that air keeps the puck going.
Ah, right. And you try to score by getting the puck into the hole on the other
end of the table?
Exactly.
Carolyn, that's air hockey.
Today we're talking about ice hockey.
Oh.
Yeah. I don't need to dress like this for air hockey.
Well, you could, but I guess you don't really need to.
Well, today we're going to learn a little bit about the cold sport, ice hockey.
So I hope you have your magazine open, and we'll get started with the first
reading for today.
Then we'll join Michelle in the Language Lab.
Ice Hockey.
Some describe hockey as the fastest game in the world.
It can travel at speeds up to 160.9 kilometers per hour.
Men, women and children wear skates and chase it around the ice.
They try to hit it with sticks.
What is it? A hockey puck!
The puck is made of rubber and isn't very big.
It takes a lot of skill to move it around the ice.
But that's what the game of ice hockey is all about.
Players hit the puck and try to get it into the other team's goal.
(Music).
Hi, everyone. I'm Michelle.
(Chinese).
Thank you so much, Michelle.
So that's hockey... basically.
Of course there's a lot more to it than we could write.
If you really want to know a sport, you need to play it, not just read about it.
Right, Carolyn?
Right, Gabe.
And I have never played ice hockey.
Uh, Gabe, have you ever played this sport?
Nope. I've played a different kind of hockey.
Air hockey.
No. Well, no. I've played that, too.
But I was thinking about field hockey.
I played field hockey in high school during PE class.
As you can see, the hockey sticks are a little different from those in ice
hockey.
And since we are talking about ice hockey today, let's get back to ice hockey.
Some describe hockey as the fastest game in the world.
I've never played, but I know some... of some pretty fast sports like table
tennis.
That's a fast sport.
Yeah. Actually, I always thought table tennis was the fastest sport.
Sometimes that little ball moves like lightning.
You're right.
But hockey involves the whole body moving around, and the puck can go over 160
kilometers per hour.
So I can understand why it's considered the fastest sport.
Now our article begins with the word "it." And we see that word repeated a few
times in the first couple of sentences.
"It" is the subject, but we don't even know what "it" is until the fifth
sentence.
That's right.
And of course, "it" is a hockey puck.
That's the thing that hockey players are always pushing around in the ice rink.
So our author was doing something there that we call building or creating
suspense.
She did that by describing something but waiting a little while to say what it
actually is.
Actually, it's a good skill to have in writing.
Or in speaking.
Learning how to create suspense for your audience will make your speech very
interesting.
People will think: What's coming next?
I can't wait to hear what she has to say next.
Well, what is coming next?
Oh, I know. It's a word we want to talk about.
What word is that?
It's something you use during a hockey game.
Yes?
It's something you put on your feet.
Well, what is it, Gabe?
You're keeping me in suspense.
OK, OK. I'm talking about the word "skate." People wear ice skates when they
play ice hockey.
They use their skates to skate around the ice.
So this word can be a noun or a verb.
You can skate with your skates.
And you can skate with ice skates like in ice hockey.
Or you can use something called roller skates if you are just skating on the
ground.
It has four wheels, kind of like on a car, two in the front and two in the back.
Now Carolyn, there's another kind of shoe with wheels, and they form a straight
line.
What's that called?
Ah, good question, Gabe.
Those are roller blades.
Roller blades are more similar to ice skates.
And you might wear roller blades when you are playing another kind of hockey,
street hockey.
Well, I've never actually played that before, either.
But it always looks fun when people are playing any kind of hockey.
Anyway, let's get back to that puck.
The lesson says it takes a lot of skill to move it around the ice.
That means you must have a lot of skill to do that.
It takes a lot of something to do something else.
I think we can use this phrase in other ways.
Right. For example, it takes a lot of time to prepare for a good speech.
That's right.
Or it takes a lot of money to go on a trip around the world.
And as we read here, it takes a lot of skill to move the puck around the ice.
But that's what ice hockey is all about.
It's all about moving that small puck around the ice and trying to score goals
with it.
That's right. That's what ice hockey is all about.
Well, we have much more to learn about hockey.
So please don't go away. We'll beright back.
