(Music).
Hello, everyone.
And welcome to Studio Classroom.
My name is Gabe.
And my name is Carolyn.
Today we are entering into the world of fashion.
Gabe, uh, you're a pretty fashionable guy.
Do you try to follow the world of fashion and keep up with the latest trends?
Uh... well, you know, I missed out on watching Fashion Week this season, so I
guess I don't follow it that closely.
But I do like to know what's in style sometimes.
Well, it's good to know what's in style, but it's a shame you missed Fashion
Week.
Yeah.
It's OK, though. You are in luck.
We're going to learn all about winter fashion for the next two days.
The next two days? Great!
Then I can go out and update my wardrobe.
Well, before you do any shopping, we should probably read our lesson today -
Winter Accessories.
OK. And then we'll join Michelle in the Language Lab.
She always has good stuff for us there.
Let's begin.
(Music).
Winter Accessories.
Discover this season's hot new looks.
When Old Man Winter blows in, we often start looking for our warmest clothing.
But in our effort to stay warm, we shouldn't forget about fashion.
In fact, the fashion industry has introduced some beautiful accessories and
colors for the 2014 season!
Gloves.
This season's gloves not only keep your hands warm but also can be a beautiful
winter accessory.
Elbow-length gloves haven't been popular since the 1960s, but they're back.
Hi, everyone. I'm Michelle.
(Chinese).
Today we are looking at the return of some great winter fashions, and we are
focusing on accessories in particular.
OK. Well, that is quite a long word, Carolyn, accessory.
But don't let it worry you, friends.
It just means something extra or in addition to the main thing.
So accessories for clothing are things like belts, hats, gloves or jewelry like
earrings.
That's right, just like in this picture.
Now in our lesson we're going to discover this season's hot new looks, which
means, well, this includes a lot of accessories.
That's right.
And it's funny that the author used the word "hot" to talk about winter fashion.
But here she's not talking about temperature, right, Gabe?
You're right about that.
In this case, "hot" means that something is popular, not that it is very warm,
although it's important to have warm clothes during the winter.
That is true.
And if you look at the beginning of the article, you will see an interesting
name used for this cold season: Old Man Winter.
Wait a minute, Carolyn, who is Old Man Winter?
Oh, well. Let me tell you, Gabe.
It's a name for the season winter.
And it helps a person to imagine a cold, blue, white old man blowing cold air in
snow, causing the weather to change from fall to winter.
Ooh... I'm certainly glad I have my coat on today.
I do like this image of winter as an old man, though.
The article also says that Old Man Winter blows in.
This goes along with the image of cold air blowing into a place during winter.
So Old Man Winter doesn't just arrive by walking up.
He blows in on a cold gust of wind.
And when that happens, we need to make sure to get out our warmest clothing.
You are right, Gabe.
The word clothing, though, can be a little bit confusing.
Why don't we learn more about the difference between clothes and clothing with
Steve and Ken!
That's a great idea.
Let's see what they have to say in the Information Cloud.
Our lesson today mentions that this is the time of year when we start looking
for our warmest clothing.
Of course we can also use the word clothes.
So what's the difference?
Clothes is countable.
Clothing is uncountable.
If you are a regular Info Cloud listener, I'd expect you to respond as fast as
Ken did.
That's right.
Clothes is countable.
Clothing is uncountable.
So we should say there are many clothes.
And for clothing, we should use "much." You're wearing too much clothing.
Also, "clothes" is always used in the plural form like scissors and pants, but
we should never put a number in front of it.
So we don't say five clothes, say five items or articles of clothing.
Here's another way to avoid using a number - just use "a lot of." You don't need
to bring a lot of clothes.
You can just bring some light clothing.
(Chinese).
Thank you, guys.
Now we'll be sure to say much clothing and many clothes.
Yes, much clothing, many clothes, much clothing, many clothes... OK.
If you're following along with your magazine, you'll see the next sentence has a
great grammar pattern.
In our effort to do something, we shouldn't do something else.
And when we see sentences like that, you know what it means.
That's right, I do!
Time to learn more about it with Liz in the Grammar Gym.
Let's join her now.
Hi there, friends.
Welcome to the Grammar Gym.
My name is Liz.
In today's lesson, the writer mentions:
But in our effort to stay warm, we shouldn't forget about fashion.
That's our Grammar Tip sentence.
It just means we shouldn't forget about fashion as we try to stay warm.
Notice the sentence pattern: In our effort to..., we shouldn't...
Part 1, "In our effort to," this is where we talk about what it is that we are
trying to do.
Part 2, "We shouldn't," this is where we want to remind our readers or listeners
what else is important.
So let's have a look at some example sentences.
In our effort to encourage people to save trees and use less paper, we shouldn't
be printing too many leaflets and flyers ourselves.
Or: In our effort to meet the deadline, we shouldn't compromise the quality of
our work.
Now it's your turn to practice using the sentence pattern.
For part1, think of something that should be done or is important.
And then for part 2, the reminder - what is something that shouldn't be done
while part 1 is going on.
And be sure to check out today's Grammar Tip section for more example sentences.
That's it for today.
This is Liz from the Grammar Gym.
See you next time.
Thanks so much, Liz.
OK. Now it's time to learn about our first fashion accessory of the lesson - and
that is gloves.
Gloves.
Gloves are great because they not only keep your hands warm but they are also
very fashionable.
I think I should get a pair of gloves, Gabe.
My hands are feeling a little chilly.
Um, yes. Actually if your hands are feeling kind of chilly, maybe you could get
gloves or mittens.
We did talk about that earlier this month.
Well, something else that you can use, another great sentence pattern here is:
not only... but also...
This pattern is used to show that there is more than one good or bad thing about
something or that there is more to say about something.
For example, not only did I buy a new pair of gloves but also a hat.
So I bought two things: one that I was planning to buy, the gloves, and one that
was extra, a hat to match.
OK, not only the gloves but the hat.
You could also say that store is not only having a sale on coats but also on
boots.
In this example, you emphasize that there is more than one item on sale.
And in the article, the author emphasizes that gloves can do more than one
thing.
They keep your hands warm and can be a beautiful accessory.
That's right.
Not only do they keep your hands warm but they also look great, too.
OK. We also learn that elbow-length gloves are back, which means that they are
popular again after not being popular for a long time.
Well, we'll be right back but not after a long time, just a short time, to learn
more from our lesson, WinterAccessories.
