Hello again, friends.
In today's lesson we are learning all about what winter accessories to wear this
season.
When Old Man Winter blows in, we can still think about fashion and stay warm at
the same time.
Of the hot new looks that have been introduced this season, we've talked about
gloves.
Elbow-length gloves are one winter accessory that have become popular again
after not being popular for almost 50 years.
That's right, they're back!
Let's continue learning about gloves and other winter accessories with the next
part of the reading.
And then we'll learn some new words with Michelle in the Language Lab.

Winter Accessories.
They're being paired with coats, dresses and pants.
Leather and real fur are just a couple of the materials they are made of.
To update them, some gloves have been given long side zippers.
Scarves.
The popular new looks for scarves are flower designs, animal prints and exciting
winter colors.
Men and women alike will enjoy this season's scarves in fur and lightweight
wool.
If you can buy only one new accessory this winter, make it a scarf.
OK.

We are continuing to talk about gloves.
And they are being paired with all sorts of things, from coats to dresses to
pants, jackets, whatever you want.
Wait, wait, wait, Carolyn, I think that is a great fashion phrase: to pair
something with something.
That means to... that means that two things are put together and that they go
well together.
That's right. They kind of match.
And when it comes to fashion, it is fun to pair regular clothing with
accessories to make an outfit look more exciting.
You could try pairing a brightly colored pair of shoes with a different colored
paired... pair of pants.
Hmm, interesting.
I like these pairings here.
Some pairings go well, and other times it doesn't look so good.
But I think it's important to be creative.
Now since these long gloves have been out of fashion for a while, designers have
updated some styles with long zippers along the side of the gloves.
That's also a really great phrase to know when talking about fashion: to be in
or out of fashion.
Now this is a way to say whether or not something is popular.
You're right about that.
This season elbow-length gloves are in fashion.
But they have been out of fashion since the 1960s.
That's a long time to be out of fashion.
It is a very long time.
And usually when we use the phrase "out of fashion," we also use the word fall.
Something can fall out of fashion.
For example, bell-bottom jeans fell out of fashion.
Hmm, that's true.
I think those were popular in the 1970s or so, maybe 1960s.
Lots of people wore bell-bottom jeans, but they fell out of fashion.
Something that is in fashion this season, other than gloves, are scarves.
Now there are lots of new designs that can be enjoyed by both men and women
alike.
Oh, alike.
The word "alike" is a good word to know.
It is used to show that two different things actually have something in common.
In the article it says "men and women alike." Usually men's fashion and women's
fashion are very different.
But here they can both enjoy wearing scarves.
And I think it's true.
I think there are many different kinds of scarves that let... that look great on
men and women.
Now you could also use this word to bring people of different ages together.
For example, young and old alike will enjoy shopping at this new store.
Ah, well. Maybe they can all get scarves because...
That's a good idea.
... scarves are also a really great accessory.
You can wear them in many different ways with many different outfits.
They're very versatile when it comes to your clothing choice.
Hmm. Well, we've learned a lot about gloves, scarves and fashion phrases today.
And of course there is lots more to learn.

Has that ever happened to you, Carolyn, I mean, you buy something that is very
fashionable at one time,
but you hardly have any time to wear it and then it goes out of fashion?
Well, let me think.
Um... There was this one time I bought a pair of small, fashionable sunglasses.
But I only wore them for a couple of months during this summer because the
following year's style was completely different.
Everyone started wearing these large sunglasses that covered half their face,
and it was cool.
I hate when that happens.
You spend a lot of money on something because it's in style,
but then you only have a certain amount of time to wear it before the fashions
change.
Well, of course that's the way fashion goes.
And it can be kind of hard to keep up.
It can be difficult to keep up.
But we want to help you to stay with the latest trend and to know what things
are in fashion this winter season.
That's right.
Hey, something we talked about today is that some things can be worn and enjoyed
by both men and women.
Well, I have this really great jacket here that I'm wearing.
Carolyn, I'm wondering if this jacket would also look good on you.
Um, I think it's a little bit big, Gabe.
That's OK. Try it on.
Be careful about your microphone.
It's very... I don't... I don't know about this.
No? You don't think? Maybe... Yeah, good.
This color is great, Carolyn.
I love this color.
It... it's a great pair here.
I think it's a little manly, Gabe. Yes.

I guess, uh, some things just need to be worn by men and other things just need

women can enjoy, though perhaps not exactly the same thing. Yes.

styles for women as well.
And the same is true for gloves and a lot of other things that you need in the
winter.
