Today we're continuing our lesson on Winter Accessories by talking about warm
winter fashions.
Fur is in style once again.
But if you are concerned about the animals, fake fur can be just as nice.
We also learned about the different styles of hats that both men and women can
choose from this season.
With such a wide selection, there should be no problem in finding the right hat
for you.
Let's continue with the next part of our reading on Winter's hottest colors.
Then we'll join Michelle in the Language Lab.
Winter Accessories.
Winter's hottest colors.
During the winter months, nature often lacks color, but 2014's fashion colors
are rich and bright.
Shades of green, from dark to very light green, are popping up in fashion shows.
Deep blue, beautiful purple and rich red also make the list for exciting winter
colors!
This season, no matter what you wear, do it in style!
OK.
(Chinese).
And now let's go to our lesson.
Thanks a lot, Michelle.
Now when I think of winter colors, I don't usually think of light green, bright
purple, rich red or bright blue.
But those are exactly the colors that are in fashion for winter.
He... he's a little surprising.
Winter is cold, so green things turn brown, trees lose their leaves and there's
just a general lack of color.
If you live in an area with snow, then even the ground is turned a uniform white
color.
You can't really see anything else.
Yeah. So I usually see people wearing neutral colors like black, white, brown or
grey in the winter.
So it's really interesting to see so much color this season.
Well, if you have your magazine open, you'll see that these colors are popping
up in fashion shows.
Gabe, what does it mean if something is popping up?
Well, that means it is appearing, um, but it is sudden or kind of unexpected
like bright colors in the winter that just pop up in fashion.
That's right.
Well, something else that pops up is an advertisement when you look at a
website.
Maybe you're just online, and suddenly you see a pop-up advertisement for
clothes.
Interesting. OK, so this is a noun, a pop-up ad.
So no one really likes pop-ups.
I mean, I certainly don't like pop-ups.
But what else do we see here?
No one really likes pop-ups because they suddenly appear on the screen and
prevent you from continuing what you're doing until you close it.
That's why we don't like them.
It's true.
But fortunately, having color pop up, a verb, at fashion shows is a good thing.
And Ken and Steve have some more information for us on fashion shows.
So let's go to the Info Cloud and learn about the difference between a runway
and a catwalk.
Fashion is something hard to avoid these days,
especially with the popularity of fashion-themed TV series like Make Me a
Supermodel, Project Runway and America's Next Top Model.
From these shows, you'll know that runway, when mentioned in the fashion
industry, is not referring to the place where planes take off and land,
but the narrow platform used by models to demonstrate clothing during a fashion
show.
Now the question is, what is a catwalk?
How is it different from a runway?
Ken, I thought you'd never ask.
Catwalks, strictly speaking, are for public fashion shows that anyone can
attend.
Runways, on the other hand, are for private shows.
You might hear people refer to private fashion shows as runway shows.
But the two terms are used interchangeably in the fashion world, and they mean
practically the same thing.
You're quite a fashion expert, I see.
Ken, everything I know about fashion is what you taught me.
Oh, thanks for the compliment.
(Chinese).
Thanks, guys.
You always have the most interesting information in the Information Cloud.
Now the clothes we're talking about have been seen on both catwalks and runways
alike.
And I like the idea of wearing bright colors when it is dark and grey outside.
You know, I do, too.
Maybe the bright colors will help people to be happy during these cold months.
Bright, exciting colors can help people to have a more positive attitude.
I'm wearing a nice bright colored jacket today.
But sometimes it's difficult to feel confident wearing bright colors because
they do make you stand out.
That is true as well.
Since many people wear neutral colors during winter, wearing bright colors will
definitely make you stand out.
But this could also be a good thing.
You can feel more confident about your own sense of style while bringing
something warm or some warm positive feelings with those bright colors.
It's true. You could actually brighten someone's day.
If you brighten someone's day, that means you make someone feel better because
maybe they weren't having a very good day at all.
You're right.
So for example, receiving flowers while she was in the hospital really
brightened Katie's day.
Oh. That is a good way to brighten someone's day.
So try it.
Try to brighten someone's day by wearing bright colors instead of black, brown,
grey or white.
And I think that there are many ways to brighten someone's day.
Of course you can brighten someone's day by wearing nice bright colors.
But think about other ways to brighten someone's day.
You can make someone have a happier day.
Do something that maybe they didn't expect.
You can brighten their day.
It is good to brighten someone's day.
And of course, remember that no matter what you do or what you wear, do it in
style.
Wait a minute, wait a minute, Carolyn.
No matter what you do?
That's a great phrase, too: no matter what.
If you say "no matter what," then other things don't matter.
You don't care about other things that are happening because you still need to
reach a certain goal or do something.
So you could say: I'm going to finish this homework before 10 p.m. no matter
what.
So even if you have other things that you need to do, you will ignore them so
that you can finish your homework.
Or you could say: No matter what he does, I'm going to forgive him.
So even if someone does something mean to you, you decide to forgive them
anyway, just like what the Bible says to do.
No matter what.
I think that is great advice.
And well, no matter how hard it is, don't give up on studying English.
We have a fun way for you to review today's lesson, don't we, Gabe?
Wait. We do?
Well, of course we do.
We do at the end of every lesson a review skit.
That's right.
And after the review skit, we'll get to have the Editor's Summary with Linda.
So, let's go check out that review skit.
Ooh...
Oh, no! Old Man Winter just blew in.
And you know what that means.
Yeah, cold weather.
It's time for you to start looking for your warmest clothing.
That's right.
So you can forget about fashion.
Never!
In fact, the fashion industry has introduced beautiful accessories and colors
for this winter season.
Oh, no, I don't believe you.
Well, just look.
Elbow-length gloves.
They haven't been popular since the 1960s.
Well, they're back, made from leather and fur and updated with long side
zippers.
Huh.
Oh, and scarves.
Scarves!
Yeah, look at my scarf.
There's all sorts of designs, flowers, stripes, animal prints.
Exciting colors.
Oh, OK.
Some are fur, some are lightweight wool.
There are so many choices.
Oh, maybe you should think about a headband.
A what?
Yes. This year they're popular in fur.
You can wear it on your head, or you can wear it around your neck.
Well.
Oh! And what about hats? They're very trendy.
Well, there's berets and there's caps and there's turbans and there's knitted
hats and there's fedoras and more.
Well... What a large selection!
Yeah! Which one is right for you?
Well, uh...
You know, in winter, nature often lacks color.
Yes.
But this year, fashion colors are rich and bright.
Yeah... so... so how do you... how do I look?
Well, you look better.
This year, Old Man Winter, you should come in style.
Oh, yellow. That's nice.
A wide range of hat styles completes the winter accessory look.
So whether you are a turban, fedora or beret kind of person, you are sure to
find something to satisfy your look.
And don't miss the variety of colors that's in style this winter, from deep blue
to rich red to all shades of green.
There is no reason not to be in style this winter.
Thanks a lot, Linda.
Well, the past two days have been great for practicing our fashion vocabulary.
We've also been able to stay up-to-date with the latest in winter fashion.
Hmm. Carolyn, of the winter accessories that we have discussed here, which one
do you like the best?
I think my favorite would be the scarves.
They come in so many fun colors and patterns and can be paired easily with many
different outfits.
And they're great for keeping warm.
What's something that stood out to you, Gabe?
Well, you know, I actually really enjoy the idea of the colors that are
available this winter, the things that are in fashion.
I think it's very great to wear lots of colors, especially in winter or on cold
and rainy days.
I think that is great.
And we hope that you have learned something with us the past two days on Studio
Classroom.
And of course we'll see you again soon.
