If you are just now joining us today, we've been enjoying a little dialogue
between two friends Christopher and Shelly.
They disagree about one thing: the importance of vitamin pills in your diet.
Christopher doesn't think they're necessary, but part of his problem is that he
doesn't like making the decision of what vitamins to take.
He thinks going to have hamburgers for lunch is great because they are a good
source of protein.
What do you think?
Let's continue with this conversation now.
And then we'll join Michelle in the Language Lab.
(Music).
Don't Forget Your Vitamins.
Burgers don't contain many of the necessary nutrients for your body.
OK, then let's go and eat salad.
Just take vitamins.
That's easier.
And vitamin pills are more concentrated, too.
You get lots of each vitamin in a pill.
But too much of one kind of vitamin isn't good for you.
True. Too much of some vitamins can cause problems.
But the amounts in multi-vitamins are just fine.
Maybe. But I'm still hungry.
Let's get something to eat at the Salad Palace.
OK, but I'm still going to stop at the drugstore first.
OK.
(Chinese).
And let's get on with our program.
Thank you, Michelle.
Well, just before our break, Christopher was talking about how burgers are a
good source of protein and our bodies need that.
What does Shelly say to that?
Burgers don't contain many of the necessary nutrients for your body.
Christopher is OK with that.
He's OK changing his plans to have a salad instead.
But Shelly still thinks it may be easier just to take vitamins.
That's right.
She says: Just take vitamins. That's easier.
And vitamin pills are more concentrated, too.
You get lots of each vitamin in a pill.
Now I think it's important to talk about the difference between vitamins and
vitamin pills as you see here.
Sometimes when we talk about taking vitamins, we really mean vitamin pills.
Good point.
Even our title Don't Forget Your Vitamins really has the idea of taking vitamin
pills.
Right.
And the argument is not about whether or not vitamins are beneficial.
Of course they are.
We need vitamins.
Yes. The argument is whether or not the pills are really necessary.
Christopher thinks we should just get vitamins naturally through the food we
eat.
And Shelly thinks we need vitamin supplements or vitamins in the form of pills.
All right. Well, Shelly says vitamin pills are more concentrated.
Now when I hear the word "concentrate," I think of focusing on something.
Concentrate, concentrate, concentrate!
That's right.
You should concentrate in class, on your homework, on your classwork or
concentrate on things that you need to do.
But here in our lesson about vitamins, if something is concentrated, that means
there is more of a pure substance there.
Have you ever gone to the store and bought a drink that you had to mix with
water before you could drink it?
Oh, yeah.
Sometimes fruit... fruit juices come like that.
You can't just drink it like it is.
It's too thick and too rich.
Exactly. So that is fruit juice concentrate.
And you need to add water for it to taste just right.
Well, vitamin pills are more concentrated than the vitamins you would get in
regular food.
But that's a good thing.
Scientists know how to put the right amount of concentration into each pill.
That's a great point.
And that's one of the pros of going with vitamin pills.
You can get the right amount of vitamins.
But Christopher is still worried about something.
He says too much of one kind of vitamin isn't good for you.
"Too much of some vitamins can cause problems," Shelly says.
And I think that could be said about many things.
Too much of anything can be bad.
Salt is good for you, but too much salt can kill you.
Sugar is also good for you, but too much of that...
Yeah, too much of sugar, and you go crazy, or at least be really hyper for a
while.
Hey, did you know that too much water can kill you, too?
That's right.
Too much too quickly can certainly be harmful for you.
So don't join any water drinking contests.
Right. Well, you don't want to have too much of anything.
But Shelly says here amounts in multi-vitamins are just fine.
I like that phrase: just fine.
It's really another way of saying simply fine.
How was that definition, Carolyn?
Uh, it was just fine, Gabe.
Thanks.
If someone asks how your day is, you can say it's just fine.
Gabe, how is your family these days?
Oh, thanks for asking.
They're just fine.
So friends, as you can see, this is a common phrase.
Use it sometime today.
Anyway, it seems like Christopher and Shelly didn't really succeed in convincing
each other, did they?
I guess not.
But it's OK because right now we get to enjoy a review skit.
And then we'll join Linda for our Editor's Summary.
Ah... let's eat. I'm hungry.
Me, too.
Here are my vitamins.
Vitamins?
You don't need those. You're wasting your money.
I am not.
Vitamins play a vital role in good health.
Hey, you should take them, too.
I don't need vitamins.
But they can provide nutrients for people that don't eat a healthy diet like
you.
Me?
Yes, you. Your diet consists of fast food.
You drink soft drinks.
Even if I wanted to take vitamins, how would I know which ones to take?
There are too many to choose from, A, B, C, D.
And the list goes on.
Well, check with your doctor to figure out exactly what you need.
But I don't want to take too many pills.
Well, then you can take multi-vitamins with minerals.
Multi-vitamins? Aren't those for kids?
Well, yes, because kids don't eat right.
Which brings me to an important point.
People need a healthy diet, and vitamins and supplements are not a good
substitute.
I know. But people don't always eat what they should.
I eat burgers.
They're a good source of protein.
But they don't contain many other nutrients.
I can eat salads, too.
Taking a vitamin pill is easier.
And vitamins are more concentrated.
No, thanks. I'll just eat food that's healthier.
And I'll just take vitamins.
Shelly and Christopher continue their discussion of vitamins today.
Christopher again points out that eating right is better than taking vitamins.
And Shelly comes back with people don't eat what they should, so how can they
get the nutrients they need?
One thing they do agree on, and that is that they are both hungry.
So they decide to get a salad instead of a burger... after Shelly gets her
vitamins.
So, who is right?
Thank you, Linda.
Well, Christopher and Shelly had quite a long conversation here while they were
thinking about going to get something to eat.
Yeah, they did.
And they said many useful things to each other, some of those things being great
English tips for us.
And now, it's time for dessert.
Don't forget your vitamins.
I know, I know.
Well, thank you for joining us today.
And we'll see you next time right here at Studio Classroom.
See you.
