We're continuing our lesson on hot pot today by learning about the more unusual
hot pot flavors.
You could try dry hot pot, which is spicy like Sichuan hot pot but everything is
pre-cooked.
You could also try cooking your food in a Japanese paper hot pot.
The paper helps to absorb some of the fat while you cook.
Just be careful since these pots only last for three hours.
There are even more unusual flavors available.
So let's continue our lesson with the next reading for today.
Then we'll join Michelle in the Language Lab.
(Music).
Everyone Likes Hot Pot.
Those looking for something different can try Vietnamese pigeon, snail or frog
hot pot.
Creative versions like bubble-tea hot pot try to surprise eaters.
If you're a dessert lover, look for ice cream hot pot.
If you're smart, you can figure out how to eat it without melting the ice cream.
Hot pot may just be the perfect meal for a group of friends or family.
And this is the perfect time of year to enjoy it with new appreciation.
OK.
(Chinese).
And let's continue with our lesson.
Thank you, Michelle.
Well, there are certainly some strange types of hot pots.
Uh, yes.
If you are looking for something different, you can find all sorts of unique
flavors and styles.
And the first sentence in this part of the reading has a great grammar pattern
that actually Liz wants to tell us more about in the Grammar Gym.
Well, let's go there now and see what she has to say.
Hello, friends.
Welcome to the Grammar Gym.
My name is Liz.
In today's lesson, the writer mentions:
Those looking for something different can try Vietnamese pigeon, snail or frog
hot pot.
That's our Grammar Tip sentence.
It's a shorter way of saying those people who are looking for something
different can try Vietnamese pigeon, snail or frog hot pot.
However, that's just longer and wordier.
Notice the pattern of today's Grammar Tip sentence: Those [verb1-ing] can
[verb2].
There are two parts to this sentence.
Part 1: There are people who are a certain way.
And part 2: They can do a certain thing.
Put these together and we get today's sentence pattern.
Here's an example.
Part 1: There are people who are waiting for their next flight.
Part 2: They can visit the duty-free stores.
Put these two parts together and we have:
Those waiting for their next flight can visit the duty-free stores.
Or, part 1: There are people following the news report.
Part 2: They can go to the lobby and watch the big screen TV.
Put the two together and we have:
Those following the news report can go to the lobby and watch the news on the
big screen TV.
If you'd like to see some more example sentences, they're available in today's
Grammar Tip section in your magazine.
That's it for today.
This is Liz from the Grammar Gym.
See you next time.
Thank you so much, Liz.
So Carolyn, if you're looking for something different, what kind of hot pot
could you try?
Well, if you like Vietnamese food, you can try pigeon, snail or frog hot pot.
Do any of those sound good to you, Gabe?
Uh... I think maybe... maybe pigeon hot pot would be fun to try?
What about snail or frog?
Uh... I don't know.
I mean, maybe if someone bought my meal and paid for everything and...
Well, if... if those flavors aren't to your liking, there are also very creative
versions like bubble-tea hot pot.
That one sounds like fun.
Yes. Wow! That would certainly surprise whoever was eating it.
There are other sweet hot pots as well, like ice cream hot pot.
Ice cream hot pot?
Well, I know a lot of people would love to eat ice cream hot pot.
But how do you keep the ice cream from melting?
Yeah, that's a good question, Carolyn.
But I'm sure your friends can figure it out.
Hmm, that's a good phrase: to figure something out.
That means that you are able to find the answer to something using your own
brain.
For example, she figured out the answer to the math problem by herself.
She didn't need anyone else's help.
Well, she must be very good at figuring things out.
You could also ask someone for help.
Can you help me figure out the best way to eat ice cream hot pot?
Well, Gabe, since you asked, when you eat this dessert hot pot, you should
quickly coat the ice cream with melted chocolate and let the chocolate harden.
Then you have chocolate-covered ice cream.
That sounds delicious.
Carolyn, I'm so glad you figured this out for me.
OK. So for ice cream hot pot, you don't actually put the ice cream in soup, you
put it in melted chocolate.
Right. And you know, hot pot is a great meal to share with friends and family.
And right now is the perfect time to enjoy it.
Right now is the perfect time to enjoy it.
Well, it sounds great, Carolyn.
I'm... I'm going to leave right now and get some ice cream hot pot.
Oh, well, not... yet, Gabe.
We... we still have more to talk about... um... yeah.
Oh! Right.
Well, um, with all of your new knowledge about hot pot, perhaps you will have a
new appreciation for this food.
That's another great phrase, Gabe: to have a new appreciation for something.
You could say: After traveling to Sichuan, he had a new... appreciation for
spicy hot pot.
Or learning how to cook your own food can help you have a new appreciation for a
chef's skill.
You know, I think that is very true, Gabe.
And you know, we've had a really great lesson the past two days about hot pot.
It's true. And you know what, Carolyn?
After talking about hot pot for so long, especially that ice cream hot pot, I'm
starting to get hungry.
So let's go and get some hot pot.
You know, Gabe, that sounds like a really great idea.
But we still need to watch a review skit.
And then we have the Editor's Summary with Linda, so we can't leave quite yet,
Gabe.
OK. Um, you know what, maybe after we do these things, can we then get some hot
pot?
Uh, yeah. I think that would be all right, Gabe.
But first, let's watch a review skit.
And then enjoy our Editor's Summary.
Today we are making hot pot.
One of the hottest meals around.
Yes. The hot pot had big beginnings.
Yes, if the legends are true.
Just before a battle, a Mongolian ruler ordered mutton from his cooks.
They were in a big hurry.
So they sliced the meat and boiled it in helmets to save time.
Helmets! That's right.
Strengthened by the meal, the ruler led the army and defeated the enemy.
Hooray!
And that was the beginning of hot pot.
Well, maybe.
Anyway, most agree that hot pot began in Mongolia.
Yes, I agree.
From there, it spread out into China and took on local characteristics.
Like Sichuan?
Yeah, Sichuan.
Uh, the damp weather there resulted in the use of chili oil.
Oh. Now that's a hot hot pot.
Ha... Well, Beijing's hot pot is cooked with coal with a chimney in the middle.
And northeastern China?
They use a sour soup.
Thai hot pot uses tom yum.
And Japanese shabu-shabu is a saltier soup.
There are so many hot pot recipes to enjoy.
And that's not all.
There's dry hot pot and Japanese paper hot pot and Vietnamese pigeon, snail and
frog.
And creative versions like bubble-tea and ice cream hot pot.
That's right.
Oh, look! Our hot pot's ready.
Let's eat!
Did you bring a bowl?
In addition to traditional forms of hot pot, we looked at some special kinds
today.
Dry hot pot, which has the flavors of Sichuan but are all pre-cooked.
And Japanese paper hot pot absorbs some of the fat so those eating it don't get
so much.
And there's even a more creative version like bubble-tea hot pot.
It is a perfect meal for friends and family to eat together.
Thank you so much, Linda. All right.
Carolyn, which kind of hot pot from today's lesson would you like to have next?
Well, hmm... I'd like to try the Japanese paper hot pot.
You know, that sounds really good.
I was thinking the same thing.
I think you must really like Japanese hot pot, Carolyn.
Yesterday you said your favorite kind was shabu-shabu.
Now you want to try the Japanese paper hot pot.
Well, I do like to try interesting things, and eating hot pot from a paper pot
is pretty unique.
True.
So after we eat that, we can get ice cream hot pot for desserts.
Great idea.
Well, what kind of hot pot do you want to try?
Be adventurous, try something new.
And thank you so much for joining us for this month's lessons.
We'll see you again as we begin a lesson for February next time right here at
Studio Classroom.
See you.
