Hello, everyone.
My name is Gabe.
And my name is Carolyn.
Welcome to Studio Classroom.
Today we are continuing our lesson on Spectacular Sochi.
Yesterday we learned a few things about the sights in and around Sochi.
Like the beaches, the Park Arboretum and the Matsesta Tea Garden.
You heard that right, friends.
Sochi is subtropical and has beaches and a tea garden.
Well, today we have a lot more to learn.
Let's begin with the first reading for today on The Experience.
So open up your magazines to the second day of the article Spectacular Sochi,
and let's get started.
(Music).
Spectacular Sochi.
The Experience.
The region of Russia along the Black Sea is known for its spas and resorts.
Here you can experience the famous Russian banya.
Sweat your troubles away in a sauna, and then take a dip in a pool of cold
water.
Take a break, drink some tea, and then go back into the sauna!
If you bring a friend along, you can take turns beating each other with tree
branches to stimulate blood circulation.
The most famous of these spas is Matsesta Sulphur Springs.
The Food.
This is your chance to sample some ethnic foods you won't find anywhere else.
Besides Russian dishes, you can try foods from surrounding countries and beyond.
(Music).
(Chinese).
Thanks, Michelle.
Wow, Gabe, I think this Russian sauna called the banya sounds like a great place
to relax.
I agree.
The Russian banya is very special, indeed.
It has several different rooms, and the sauna is a wooden room filled with wet
steam.
It sounds like you would sweat a lot.
In fact, our author writes that you can sweat your troubles away.
And that is a good phrase: to something your troubles away.
Maybe you are tired and don't want to deal with any of the problems that you are
facing.
You could say: I just want to sleep my troubles away.
Well, that sounds like a good idea.
Unfortunately, you'll have to take care of things when you wake up, though
having a fresh mind could certainly help in solving those problems.
You could also use this phrase this way:
You can wish your troubles away, or you can't wish your troubles away.
Hmm, yes. That may be true, but you can always relax in a sauna and allow your
troubles to leave your body as you sweat.
Maybe that's why this tradition has lasted for centuries.
This also reminds me of the hot springs found around Taipei.
They are a great place to go to relax, especially during the cold winter months.
Hot springs are a great place to sweat your troubles away and relax.
Now after you get nice and warmed up in the sauna, you can step outside and take
a dip in a pool of cold water.
Or if you're in Siberia, you can jump in the snow.
That sounds really cold.
I don't know if I'd want to take a dip in icy water.
I think it sounds like fun.
And we just used a great phrase there: to take a dip.
We use this phrase when we talk about going into the water.
So if it's summertime and you are hot, you might want to take a dip in the
swimming pool.
Or if you are at the beach, you could take a quick dip in the water, and then
lay out on the sand to dry off.
Or if you are at the hot spring, you can take a dip in the hot pool, and then
take a dip in the cold pool.
Right.
Lots of people enjoy going to the hot spring, so I can see why people would love
to go to the banya as well.
Well, something very interesting that they do at the banya is take a bath broom
made of a small bundle of leaves and branches that had been dipped in cold water
and hit it against their bodies.
This is such a common part of the banya that they usually have a special person
that works there.
And it's his job to hit people with the branches.
Hmm, though most people just go with a group of friends and hit each other.
Uh, this sounds a little bit scary.
Why would they want to hit each other with cold, wet branches?
I don't think I like that very much.
Well, they're not trying to hurt each other.
They smack the branches quickly over the body to increase blood flow and remove
the bad things from the body.
Oh, how interesting.
Well, that explains the Russian proverbs:
The bath broom at the banya is worth more than money.
And Vanya has recovered from sicknesses thanks to the banya.
Wow! Those are some great and unique proverbs.
Well, we need to move along in our article to the next section: The Food.
There are lots of different ethnic foods that you can try.
There sure are.
And we learn that this is your chance to try them, so let's look at that phrase.
If this is your chance to do something, that means that you might not be able to
do it again in the future, and you should try to do it now.
Right.
For example, your boss asks you to work on a very important project, and your
co-worker tells you:
This is your chance to show how valuable you are to the company.
So you should do your very best and not waste the opportunity to impress your
boss.
And maybe after that, you would have the chance to ask for a raise.
Another example would be if you are competing in a speech competition, your
teacher might say:
This is your chance to use the English you've spent so much time learning.
Well, I certainly hope that you take the chance to use your English.
And you don't need to talk to a native speaker; just talk to one of your friends
that watches Studio Classroom.
And we'll be right back to learn more afterthis.
