Hello, everyone, and welcome to Studio Classroom.
My name is Gabe.
And I'm Carolyn.
And today we're going to talk about how to care for your hair.
Yes, hair.
That doesn't sound very exciting.
Well, maybe it doesn't sound exciting, but it's very important to know how to
take care of your hair.
Besides, these are all easy tips, Gabe.
Well, I don't have that much hair.
But if they're easy, then let's learn some simple ways to take better care of
our hair.
Good attitude! And you do have enough hair to want to take care of it.
So open up your magazines to the lesson on Hair Care, and let's start with the
first reading.
(Music).
Hair Care.
Easy tips for great-looking hair.
What is one of the first things people notice about us?
Our hair!
That's why most of us try hard to keep our hair healthy and attractive.
But we all have bad hair days sometimes.
What can we do to avoid them?
Keep your hair clean, but don't wash it too often as it will dry out.
When you do wash it, use conditioner.
Before getting your hair wet, comb out any tangles with a wide-toothed comb.
Hi, everyone. I'm Michelle.
(Chinese).
Thanks, Michelle.
I really like this article.
I think it's very helpful since everyone wants to have great-looking hair.
Yes, I suppose that is true.
And the article opens with a question.
What is one of the first things people notice about us?
And of course the answer is our hair.
And that is a good way to begin a conversation with the question: What is one
something?
You could ask: What is one place you would love to visit?
Oh. Can I answer?
Oh, sure, Gabe.
I'd love to visit Russia.
OK. You could also ask: What is one thing you like about your appearance?
Oh. Hmm, I like my smile.
When I smile, I can spread happiness and make other people smile, too.
And of course in the article, we learn that one of the first things people
notice about us is our hair.
Do you think that's true, Gabe?
Um, yeah.
Well, when you first look at a person, you look at their face.
Since hair is on the head and surrounds the face, you probably see what it looks
like first before you really notice the person's face.
Ah, yes. Those details are too small, so you look at the hair first.
And I think that's true.
So of course we want to make our hair look attractive, but sometimes we have bad
hair days.
Another great phrase, Carolyn.
So this phrase can mean that your hair looks really bad or it can mean something
else.
Yes, it can.
If someone says that they're having a bad hair day but their hair looks fine,
they probably mean that they are having a bad day.
Everything is going wrong, and it probably started from the time they got out of
bed.
So, even though I don't have much hair, not as much as you, I can still have a
bad hair day.
Maybe I only get a small amount of sleep, wake up, my hair is a mess.
I spilled coffee all over my clothes.
I'm late for work because I had to change.
Oh. Then I could ask you why you were late, and you could say...
... that I'm just having a bad hair day.
So I don't think I look very good that day, and everything seems to go wrong.
Well, I hope you aren't having a bad hair day.
But even if you are, we have some helpful tips that can at least make you feel
better about your hair.
Well, that's certainly a good start.
But there are other things you can do when you have a bad hair day.
How can you overcome a bad hair day, Carolyn?
Well, if I'm having a really bad day, and everything seems to go wrong, I'd like
to stop and just take time to pray.
God is always there and is ready to listen and help us when we are facing
troubles.
Well, that sounds like a great way to get more focused and face your problems
instead of getting upset over the things that are going wrong.
Exactly. But it's time to move on to the first point of our lesson: Keep your
hair clean.
Ah. But you shouldn't wash it too often as it will dry out.
Ah, that is a good point and an interesting grammar point that Liz wants to tell
us more about in the Grammar Gym.
Welcome to the Grammar Gym, friends.
I hope you're all doing well today.
My name is Liz.
In today's lesson we see this statement:
Keep your hair clean, but don't wash it too often as it will dry out.
That's our Grammar Tip sentence.
Notice the phrase at the end of the sentence: as it will dry out.
The word "as" here means because.
So we can say:
Keep your hair clean, but don't wash it too often because it will dry out.
For many native speakers, using "as" to mean because is more often in formal
situations.
Also, for some native speakers, the use of "as" is in situations where the
reason is not the main focus while the use of because puts more emphasis on the
reason.
But basically, "as" can mean because.
Here are some example sentences.
Mr. Walter didn't stop to get coffee as he was already late for his appointment.
Or, Karen didn't call her friend back as the movie was about to start.
If you want to see some more example sentences, you'll find them in today's
Grammar Tip section in your Studio Classroom magazine.
That's it for today.
This is Liz from the Grammar Gym.
See you next time.
(Music).
Thank you, Liz.
Well, we certainly don't want our hair to be dried out, so what can we do?
Well, we learn from our lesson that when you do wash your hair, you should also
use conditioner.
I see. That is a good idea.
But that sentence is a little confusing.
It says when you do, shouldn't it say when you... when do you, Carolyn?
Ah, good point, but no.
We often see the question "When do you do something?" But here it is being used
as a statement that might come true in the future.
So we say "when you do" because we expect the person to perform a certain
action.
I see.
And we certainly do expect that most people will wash their hair eventually, so
when they do that, they should use conditioner as well as shampoo.
Right. Well, we also want to be sure to remove any tangles or knots in our hair
while it is still dry.
Now that is an interesting point.
Isn't it easy to do that when your hair is wet?
Well, not really.
And actually, combing or brushing wet hair can cause a lot of damage.
Whoa! Really? I had no idea that hair could be damaged.
So you should be gentle when you brush your hair and try to get out any knots
and tangles before you wash it.
Right. Well, we still have many more tips to talk about in our lesson, so we
will continue right afterthis.
