Welcome back.
What is the first thing people notice when they look at us?
Our hair.
Today we're talking about hair tips and some things that you can do to make sure
your hair stays great and that you avoid bad hair days.
Well, what are some of the tips we've talked about so far?
One is to make sure that you wash your hair, but don't overwash it because then
it could dry out.
And of course you want to make sure you use conditioner whenever you wash your
hair.
Another tip was that you want to make sure that you take out all of the tangles
and knots while your hair is still dry to prevent damaging it.
Well, we have more to learn in the next part of our reading for today.
(Music).
Hair Care.
Gently shampoo your hair so it won't break off or get tangles.
Gently dry your hair with a towel; don't rub it quickly.
When possible, allow hair to dry naturally.
NEVER use a brush on wet hair.
Don't use electric hair devices every day since regular use will cause damage.
Cut your hair every six to eight weeks.
Just cutting a small amount at the bottom will get rid of split ends.
Follow these tips to have beautiful hair.
All right.
(Chinese).
And now let's go to our teachers.
Thanks, Michelle.
Wow! There are a lot of hair care tips that I've never really considered.
Same here.
Well, let's move on to the next point in this part of the lesson: Gently shampoo
your hair.
But I like to scrub my head really hard to get rid of all the oil.
Well, it's good to clean your hair, but you don't want to damage it by
scrubbing.
You should gently wash it and gently dry it with a towel.
But using a blow dryer is so much faster, and it makes my hair look cool.
Well, this is true, but using electric devices that place a lot of heat on your
hair can damage it if you use it every day.
It's good to give your hair a break and let it air dry before your hair starts
to break off.
Well, I certainly don't want weak hair.
And you used a great phrase: to let something air dry.
That means it dries naturally without using electricity or anything else.
Right. So you can let your laundry air dry when the weather is nice.
You don't need to worry about wasting electricity by putting it in an electric
dryer.
But when the weather is cold and damp, it's nice to be able to use a dryer or a
blow dryer.
I don't want to get sick from my hair being cold and wet, Carolyn.
Well, that's a good point.
Just try to let your hair dry naturally when you can.
Well, one tip that I always follow is to never use a brush on wet hair.
No, you probably use a comb, Gabe.
Um, maybe. But combs and brushes are different.
Well, you are right about that.
So let's look at the difference between the two, a brush and a comb.
Now a brush is a wide and... is wide and long and has lots of bristles that
cover the head of the brush.
But what does a comb look like?
Well, combs are long and thin and only have one row of teeth or bristles.
Right.
Now people with longer hair usually use brushes while people with shorter hair
use combs.
But depending on the type of hair you have and the style you want, you can use
either one.
So do you use a comb or a brush?
Carolyn, what about you?
Do you use a comb or a brush?
Well, actually, I use both.
I use the brush to get rid of any tangles and make my hair shiny, and the comb
to help style my hair.
I see.
But you don't use them when your hair is wet?
Right. That can cause the hair to break.
And another thing you can do is get your hair trimmed.
That's a good word to look at: trim.
How is this different from getting your hair cut, Gabe?
Well, if you get your hair cut, then you might get rid of a lot of hair.
But if you get it trimmed, then you only cut a small portion off to keep the
ends of your hair healthy.
Ah, yes. So I like to get my hair trimmed so that it will grow longer while
staying healthy.
It's important to trim off the split ends to keep your hair looking shiny and
strong.
Wow. We've talked about a lot of great tips to have beautiful, healthy hair.
And of course now it's time to join Steve and Ken in the Information Cloud.
And then we'll watch a review skit, and of course, enjoy a summary of today's
lesson with our editor Linda.
Let's go.
A recent study revealed that one subject middle-aged men really don't like to
talk about is hair.
But since it's an important subject when it comes to English learning, Ken and I
are going to talk about hair today.
That's right.
The word hair can be either countable or uncountable depending on what you're
referring to.
If you want to refer to all the hairs on one's head, it is uncountable.
For example, Steve has blond hair - hair, no S.
Right.
However, if you want to refer to more than one hair - a few hairs, for example -
then it takes the plural form.
So while Ken's hair appears to be black, one hair I found was gray, so I think
there are probably more gray hairs on his head.
I knew I would regret talking about this subject.
Now Steve just mentioned gray hair, but we can also say white hair, can't we,
Steve?
Sure. Right. Gray hair and white hair are really the same thing.
It's just a matter of degree.
When someone's hair starts to change color due to aging, we say they're going
gray or graying at the temples.
But gray hair is really an optical illusion.
It's the product of colored hairs mixed in with white hairs.
(Chinese).
Look at your hair!
It's a big mess.
I know. I'm having a bad hair day.
I was hoping no one would notice.
Everyone will notice!
Your hair is one of the first things people see!
Why can't I have healthy, attractive hair?
You can.
May I give you some tips?
Yes. Please do.
Keep your hair clean.
Oh, OK.
But don't wash it too often.
And use conditioner.
All right.
But first, comb out the tangles.
Ouch! But that hurts.
Use a wide-toothed comb.
Oh, good idea.
Gently shampoo your hair so it won't break off or get tangles.
Gently?
Then gently dry your hair with a towel.
If possible, let it dry naturally.
Oh, naturally. Oh.
Never brush wet hair.
Never?
And don't use electric devices every day.
Yeah, but...
It can cause damage.
Oh, no.
What about the split ends?
Cut your hair every six to eight weeks.
Oh, I didn't know that.
Good idea.
And when you have a bad hair day, wear a hat!
That's a great idea.
That's what I do.
So you're having a bad hair day, too.
Today we learned that there are some tips we can pay attention to not to have
bad hair days.
For example, shampoo your hair gently so it doesn't get all tangled up, and use
conditioner afterward.
When drying it, use a wide-toothed comb to prevent breaking off your hair.
And let it dry naturally as often as possible so it doesn't get so damaged from
the heat of a hair dryer.
Try these so you don't have to be embarrassed anymore about a bad hair day.
Thank you, Linda.
Well, it's been a great day covering lots of tips about hair care.
Yes, it has.
And we learned many different tips today.
Some of them might have been new for you.
Some were certainly new for me.
I did not know that I should dry my hair with a towel gently as opposed to using
a blow dryer.
That's something I'll try to remember.
Carolyn, what was one tip that you enjoyed or benefited from today?
Well, just that it's really important not to brush or comb your hair when it's
wet.
It's something that I hadn't really thought about before.
But I have noticed that if I comb or brush my hair when it's wet, it's not quite
as strong as if I don't and I just let it dry naturally.
I see.
Yes, of course, don't do that when it's wet.
Well, we also talked about trimming our hair.
You can go and get a haircut or just get your hair trimmed.
Now what if you have a lot of hair and you need to get rid of it, um, but you
don't want... want to just waste it, what can you do, Carolyn?
Well, so a lot of times you go and get your hair cut, and the hair goes in the
trash.
But if you have beautiful long hair and you want to help people who would like
to have long hair but because of certain medical conditions they don't have any
hair,
you can get it cut and donate it.
Ah! So how does that work, you donate your hair to somebody or an organization
or... what?
Well, usually you would donate to an organization.
So many hair salons, at least in the U.S., have partnered with different charity
organizations where you can get a certain length of your hair,
a very long length of your hair cut off, and then they will send it to the
company,
and they will give it... or they will make it into a wig and give it to someone
who would like to wear that.
All right.
Well, of course it's important to do things that are helpful for others.
Thank you for joining us here today.
And we'll see you next time right here at Studio Classroom.
