Hello, everyone, and welcome to Studio Classroom.
My name is Gabe.
And I'm Carolyn.
Today we are continuing our lesson: A Love Story.
And this is the perfect day to read a love story that is filled with idioms.
It sure is.
It's Valentine's Day.
Now yesterday we met Luke, a guy head over heels in love, Emma, who has a heart
of gold...
And Andrew, a bully.
And there is no love lost between Luke and Andrew.
They don't like each other at all.
Well, I'm very eager to find out what happens in our story.
So let's open up our magazines and begin.
(Music).
A Love Story.
"Luke, are you OK?" asked Luke's older brother, Henry.
Gazing out the window, Luke answered, "Yeah, I'm just thinking about a girl."
Henry laughed softly,
"Ah, puppy love." Luke glared at his brother.
They had a love-hate relationship.
Henry didn't always take Luke seriously, but Luke knew Henry's heart was in the
right place.
Henry stopped laughing, "Well, why don't you ask her out?
"She wouldn't want to go out with me," Luke groaned.
(Music).
(Chinese).
Thank you, Michelle.
Well, I have been wondering about something.
I noticed that Carolyn has a flower in her hands.
Carolyn, where did you get that nice flower?
Um, I... I don't have a flower, Gabe.
I don't know what you're talking about.
You don't have a flower?
No. No.
You're sure... you're sure you're not head over heels in love with somebody?
Or... or someone has a heart of gold and maybe they gave you a flower or
something?
Well, I mean, you know, it is Valentine's Day, everyone wants to have a flower
on Valentine's Day.
Yeah. Well, I'm very curious about that.
It's very nice, a very nice-looking flower indeed.
Well, friends, back to the story...
Luke is very unfortunate here.
Everyone seems to enjoy making fun of him.
Oh, yes. Poor Luke.
Yesterday he was bullied by Andrew.
And now what is happening, Gabe?
Well, he is being bullied by his brother.
Actually, he's not being bullied by his brother.
His brother Henry is just teasing him.
Well, if someone is just sitting there, gazing out the window, thinking about a
person, it can be very tempting to tease them about it.
Usually this would just be for fun.
But it seems like Luke and Henry don't always get along.
Well, they are brothers after all.
Love-hate relationships can be pretty common among family members.
Of course you love your family, but sometimes you can really hate their
behavior.
That's true.
And what Luke can't stand is that Henry doesn't always take him seriously.
Hey, that's a great phrase: to take someone seriously.
If you take someone seriously, then you think it's important to pay attention to
them.
It's important to take your teacher, your parents or your boss seriously.
You can also take a situation seriously.
Yeah, like maybe you do poorly on a test, you should take it seriously and work
to improve for next time.
But that doesn't mean you should treat yourself badly.
Good point.
So you should still have a positive attitude while caring about things that are
important.
Now back to the story.
Henry doesn't take Luke seriously, but he does finally stop laughing.
Yes, and we can get a pretty good understanding of the relationship between
these two brothers: a love-hate relationship.
And what question does he ask?
Why don't you ask her out?
A good question.
And it's one that we should look at a little closer - to ask someone out.
What does it mean to ask someone out, Gabe?
I'm glad you asked me, Carolyn, yes.
It means that you ask a person to go on a date with you.
So you are asking them to go out to a place with you.
Right. So someone could ask a person out to dinner, to a movie or another event.
OK. So Henry is suggesting that Luke ask Emma out on a date.
He is.
Unfortunately, Luke doesn't think Emma would say yes.
He is not very confident.
And asking someone out for the first time can be very difficult and scary.
Especially if you really like the person.
If they say no, you might start to feel really uncomfortable when you are in the
same place.
Oh, Luke.
Well, we will have to wait just a moment to find out what happens in the next
part of our story.
