Hello, everyone, and welcome to Studio Classroom.
My name is Gabe.
I'm Carolyn.
And thank you for joining us once again as we continue our three-part lesson: A
Love Story.
Now the past two days have been building up to today's conclusion to answer the
questions:
What will happen to Emma's wallet?
Will Luke ask her out?
How will Emma respond?
Is there another guy who will ask Emma first?
Oh, there are so many questions to answer in this love story.
Let's not waste any more time.
So open up your magazines, and we'll listen to the first part of today's story.
(Music).
A Love Story.
Luke ran toward the wallet, but Andrew got to it first.
Andrew picked it up and started taking out some cash.
Luke's heart stood still.
Luke gulped and said, "That's Emma's. Give it back." Andrew said, "It's mine
now.".
"Give it back!" Luke repeated.
"And what are you going to do about it?" Andrew asked.
He shoved Luke and raised his fist.
Just then, Emma returned and exclaimed, "What are you doing?".
"None of your business!" Andrew snapped.
"Well, my wallet is my business. Please give it back." Emma said.
(Music).
Hi, everyone. I'm Michelle.
(Chinese).
Thank you, Michelle.
Well, Carolyn, this story is getting very exciting.
Yes, it is.
Is there going to be a fight?
What will Andrew do?
Will... will someone tell a teacher?
Well, I can tell that you are really getting into the story.
And speaking of getting, you can see in your magazine that Andrew got to the
wallet first.
Ah, yes.
And if you get to something first, that means that you either arrive at the
place faster than someone else or you achieve something before someone else.
So you could say the runner got to the finish line first.
That means he won the race.
Or you could say the salesman got to the company first.
So he was able to sign a contract with them before any of the other salesmen had
a chance.
So it can pay to get to something first.
Right. So if we go back to our story, Luke wanted to get the wallet to give to
Emma, but he wasn't the only one that saw the wallet fall.
Right. Andrew got there first, and he started to take money out of the wallet.
What?! So we learn that not only is Andrew a bully, he's also a thief.
But you know what?
Now I think Luke is very brave.
He decided to stand up to Andrew and ask him to give the wallet back to Emma.
I agree. That wasn't easy at all.
It seems like his courage is growing even though his heart... stood still when
he saw what Andrew was doing.
Well hey, let's talk a little bit about that idiom.
To say that your heart stood still means that your emotions were so strong that
it felt like your heart stopped beating.
Now sometimes this might be a good thing, and other times it might be a bad
thing.
For example, you could say that Luke's heart stood still the first time he saw
Emma.
He thought she was gorgeous, and her beauty made his heart stand still.
But Andrew made his heart stand still for another reason: surprise and fear.
So here Luke's heart stood still because he was surprised, in a bad way, by
Andrew's actions,
and was afraid of what might happen if he tried to get the wallet back.
Right.
Well, lucky for Luke, Emma came back just as Andrew was about to hit him.
Yes. And we see a great phrase used to introduce Emma's return: just then.
All right. You may remember that we learned about the word "just" earlier this
month.
If you use "just then" to introduce a sentence, you are showing that something
happened quickly, and it is surprising.
Just then.
Right. So maybe you are at a coffee shop, and you go to pay for your order.
Just then, you realized that you left your wallet at home.
Oh, no. That's not good.
I hope that doesn't happen to you.
But in our story, Emma comes back, and Andrew snaps at her.
What does that mean, Carolyn?
Well, a snap is a quick, sharp sound like what you just did with your fingers.
But if you use "snap" to describe the way someone speaks, it means that they are
angry and speak in a short, quick way.
So Andrew is not happy that Emma returned.
He is angry. And he shows it by snapping at her with his words.
Oh, my! And Emma is not happy with Andrew, either.
Andrew tried to steal money from her wallet.
Surprisingly, though, Emma still uses polite words to request that he return her
wallet.
She says please.
That is surprising.
Usually when people are upset, they forget about using their manners.
But we can see just how nice the person Emma is from this.
Even though she is upset, she is still polite.
That's right.
And I think that we could probably learn a lesson or two from people like Emma.
Remember to say please; remember to say thank you.
Remember to say I'm sorry and I forgive you.
These are all very polite words to know.
They are, and they're all very important words to use regardless of how you're
feeling.
It's important to be polite and nice to other people.
Well, Emma is a very special girl, and we will be able to find out finally how
the story endsright after this.
