(Music).
Hello, and welcome to Studio Classroom.
My name is Gabe.
I'm Carolyn.
And we are continuing a great lesson on how to shop for bargains.
We all need to go out and buy things, whether it's clothes, food, electronics,
things like this, so it's good to know how to be a smart shopper.
You are right.
And yesterday we learned about some of the tricks shopkeepers use to make
customers feel like they're saving money even though they aren't.
And today we have a few tricks that customers can use to make sure that they are
getting a good deal.
Good... good idea.
So open up your magazines and let's learn about these tips for shoppers.
(Music).
Shopping for Bargains.
Tips for shoppers.
Check for sales ads in the newspaper or online.
Always compare prices before buying anything.
If ordering from the States, watch for holiday sales.
Some of the best sales usually occur just before Christmas.
Shop after the season ends when seasonal items are usually greatly discounted.
Go to street markets where you can bargain with most sellers.
When shopping online, look for sites with free shipping.
Avoid shopping with friends.
Friends can persuade you to buy something you don't really need.
Hi, everyone. I'm Michelle.
(Chinese).
Thank you, Michelle.
These are some really great tips for people to try, aren't they, Gabe?
They really are, Carolyn.
And most of them are actually quite simple.
I think that most people already compare prices of things while they shop, but
doing some research before you go can also be very helpful.
Right.
You can look for sales online or in newspapers or ads that you get from the
store.
Then you can compare the prices between stores and decide which items to buy at
which store.
Maybe you go to many different stores.
And there are also certain times of the year when items are cheaper.
Yes, there are.
And there are even lists online that let you know which foods are cheaper at
which times throughout the year as well as household products and electronics.
So if you don't need something right away, it might be better to wait for a
sale.
It might be worth your time.
If you wait until the end of a season to buy clothes, you can usually get some
really good deals.
That's right.
The stores want to get rid of last season's clothes so they will have room for
all of the new clothes.
For example, the best time to buy summer clothes is when the season is changing
from summer to fall.
The stores have lots of warmer clothes that they need to put in the store racks
and shelves,
but they don't have any space unless they get rid of the summer clothes first.
So they have great sales to try to get rid of all of their extra clothing.
And another time of year for sales in the U.S. is around the holidays.
Lots of stores are trying to sell as much as they can for the Christmas season,
so they have lots of good deals.
And if you want to stock up on holiday-themed items, you should wait until the
holiday is over.
So the best time to buy Christmas decorations is... you guessed it! After
Christmas.
And the best time to buy chocolate is after Valentine's Day.
Ah. So everyone in the U.S. is buying lots of candy right now.
Right. Well, I'm sure they are.
Another place you could go is a street market.
These are more popular in Asia than in the United States, but they are outside
areas where people can buy and sell things.
And a great thing about street markets is that you can bargain with the
shopkeepers to get an even lower price, especially if you want to buy several
items.
Right. But you should be careful if you are at a street market also, because the
prices might be very different for each person.
So you should already have an idea of how much each item should cost before you
go.
Ah. This is very true.
You want to make sure that the shopkeeper doesn't trick you by giving you a
higher price than what other people might pay.
That's right.
So be careful when you go shopping, especially out in the markets.
Do your research first.
Figure out how much something should cost.
And then you can go and maybe strike up a good deal and bargain with the
shopkeeper.
That's right.
Well, we still have several more tips to learn about in our lesson right after
this.
So don't goaway.
