Hello, everyone, and welcome to Studio Classroom.
My name is Gabe.
And my name is Carolyn.
And your English will improve today.
And here at Studio Classroom, we not only teach English but we also try to write
and teach lessons that are helpful in many areas of life.
That's right.
And last month we started a lesson about depression called Naming the Darkness.
In our lesson today and tomorrow we'll continue learning about depression and
how we can fight it.
So open your magazine and let's get started.
(Music).
Depression Part to: Fighting the Darkness.
Where does depression come from, and how is it conquered?
Depression affects people all over the world, replacing happiness with despair
and emptiness.
But there is hope!
Understanding this disease's causes and treatments can put people on the road to
healing.
Why me?
I struggled with depression for many years without knowing what triggered it.
It was terrifying to be so miserable for no apparent reason.
Many elements can contribute to depression, and several of them affected me.
Here are just a few:
Physical problems: Some illnesses and problems with hormones can cause
depression.
Hi, everyone. I'm Michelle.
(Chinese).
Thank you, Michelle.
Well, we will learn more about the physical problems related to depression
later.
But for now, let's talk about something English here at the top.
We see the question: Where does depression come from, and how is it conquered?
Already we see two struggle words in our lesson: fight and conquer.
You're right about that, Gabe.
And they do indicate some kind of struggle, and depression is a struggle.
If you are struggling with depression, you may need to admit it first.
But after that, you don't want to do nothing about it, you want to fight it.
And when you fight something, you try not to let it win.
That's right.
Now what other things do you fight?
Sometimes I fight an illness if I am sick.
I know friends who have fought cancer before.
You could fight diseases.
Or sometimes people talk about fighting feelings.
For example, my friend said he didn't want to be in a relationship.
But then he started to have feelings for someone.
He fought his feelings for a while.
But after a while, he asked the girl out.
Ah. So his feelings won in that situation.
Well, you can fight many things.
But when it comes to fighting depression, you want to come out on top.
You want to conquer depression.
And when you conquer something, that means you won, like when enemies are
fighting in a battle, each side hopes to conquer the other side.
Or maybe you want to accomplish something really challenging like hiking to the
top of a tall mountain.
When you do, you tell your friends:
You see that mountain? I conquered that mountain.
And you know, there's a very common phrase that uses the word conquer.
It's all about love.
Oh, I know! Love conquers all.
Bingo! Love conquers all.
That means no matter how bad a situation is or how awful the world is, love will
win in the end because love conquers all.
Well, if you are struggling with depression, we hope that you believe love
conquers all.
Love can conquer your depression.
Well, let's move on here.
We read that depression affects people all over the world, replacing happiness
with despair and emptiness.
Let's take a look at that phrase: to replace something with something else.
What does that mean?
Well, it means you had one thing, but now you change it and get something else
instead.
So in our lesson, it means that at one time people were happy, but now they feel
despair and they feel empty.
But let's use this phrase in another way.
We replaced the old printer in our office with a new one.
Yeah. We really needed a new printer.
Or you could say since she wasn't a very good teacher, she was replaced with
someone else.
You usually try to replace things with better things.
But as we see in our lesson, sometimes happiness, which is good, is replaced
with despair and emptiness.
And despair is when you have completely lost hope.
The adjective form of this word is desperate.
When people feel desperate, they try or do things that they normally would not
do.
For example, do you know anyone who is desperate to have a girlfriend or
boyfriend?
If they're desperate, maybe they will date anyone.
And that's not a good thing.
You're right about that.
You shouldn't start dating because you feel desperate for a boyfriend or
girlfriend, then you might make poor decisions and regret it later.
But back to despair, it's a feeling that many people have sometimes; but there
is hope.
Understanding this disease's causes and treatments can put people on the road to
healing.
Ooh, the road to healing.
I like that phrase.
Life is often compared to a journey, right?
