Hello, everyone, and welcome to Studio Classroom.
My name is Gabe.
And I'm Carolyn.
And we're glad that you are back today because we are continuing our important
lesson about depression.
Do you or someone you know struggle with depression?
Yesterday we started to look at some of the causes of depression.
If you miss that lesson, I suggest you go back and read it in your magazine.
And today we will be talking about some of the ways thay you can treat this
illness.
There's always a lot to learn here at Studio Classroom.
So let's get started with the first reading of the day.
(Music).
Depression Part 2: Fighting the Darkness.
Treatments.
The most common treatments for depression are therapy and medicine.
When I decided I needed professional help for my depression, therapy was my
first choice.
I met regularly with a counselor to discuss my depression.
The kind of therapy I did focused mostly on thought patterns and actions.
My counselor helped me see life more positively and realistically.
She urged me to eat right, exercise and sleep enough.
Other types of therapy focus on past trauma or on relationships.
A counselor may discuss troubling emotions, what triggers them and how to handle
them productively.
(Chinese).
Thank you, Michelle.
Well, today we are talking all about treatments for depression.
A treatment of an illness is how you treat it or how you change it to help it
improve.
So of course treatment is a positive thing here.
If you're sick, you want to find the right kind of treatment.
You want to treat your illness with medicine or therapy.
But the word "treat" can also be used in a negative way, right?
Right. It could also mean the way you act toward someone.
For example, I didn't like the way you treated my classmate the other day.
You bullied her.
Or I didn't like your treatment of my classmate.
Treat is the verb, and treatment is the noun.
And we are reading about treatments for depression here in our lesson.
We read the most common treatments for depression are therapy and medicine.
Of course there are many kinds of medicines out there for different illnesses.
And just as a reminder, in English, we say we take medicine.
We eat other kinds of food, but we take medicine.
Right.
Now I want to talk about that other word: therapy.
This word means healing of some kind.
And there are many different kinds of therapies.
When I injured my knee a few years ago, the doctor suggested physical therapy.
He told me of some exercises I could do to help heal the wound.
When I went to the clinic, they would also give me electro-shock therapy.
Whoa, Gabe, how did that work?
I'm not really sure.
They would place a patch on my knee, connected to electric pulses.
This electro-shock therapy was supposed to treat my injury.
Well, if you are a sports player and get injured, you may do physical therapy
like Gabe.
There are other therapies that come to mind.
Massage therapy is one - healing through massages.
Now that doesn't sound too bad at all.
Another one I like is music therapy.
Sometimes music can bring healing.
Do you ever feel that way?
Maybe you're having a bad day, and there's a song you listen to that puts you in
a better mood.
Music is definitely a great kind of therapy.
It really is.
But there's a kind of therapy I think our lesson is talking about, and that
is... psychotherapy.
A professional therapist can help give psychotherapy by talking about the
problems and asking questions that lead to healing.
Now did you notice I used that word "therapist"?
A therapist is someone whose job is to give therapy to people.
And in our lesson, perhaps our author is meeting with a therapist.
She said she met regularly with a counselor to discuss her depression.
Well, in many cases, a professional psychologist or a licensed therapist could
also simply be called a counselor.
"I met with my counselor today" might also mean I met with my therapist.
But something important to remember is that a counselor is not necessarily a
trained professional.
Psychologist and therapists are.
Hopefully your counselor is a therapist or psychologist with the proper kind of
training.
And I believe the counselor mentioned in our lesson had proper training.
Our author met regularly with her counselor.
Now let's look at the word "regularly." If you do something regularly, you do it
on a regular basis or often.
Maybe you do something according to your calendar or schedule.
What kind of things do you do regularly, Gabe?
Well, I try to exercise regularly.
I go to the gym regularly, maybe two or three times a week.
I eat at this delicious teppanyaki restaurant regularly.
I try to eat there at least once a week.
I think I know which restaurant you are talking about, Gabe.
Now if you go to a place regularly, then there's a special word for you.
You're a regular.
We especially use this word to talk about customers who return to a restaurant.
You could say Gabe's a regular at the teppanyaki restaurant.
I certainly am a regular there.
Our friend Bill is a regular at Casa Della Pasta, a great pasta place in the
neighborhood.
All right.
Well, it's time for us now to take a little break.
But we'll be back right afterthis.
