I am Mr. Simple, Simple, 'cause I cannot speak Korean.
I am Mr. Simple, Simple.
It would take too long to learn it.
Hello, friends.
I was just practicing Mr. Simple, a popular and rhythmic song by the K-Pop group
Super Junior.
I haven't memorized the words yet, but I'm getting there because I am an ELF, an
ELF, an Ever Lasting Friend of Super Junior's.
And I want to know more about the story of Kyuhyun.
I think we will find out more about him in this next section, at least I hope we
will.
Let's read it now.
Super Junior's Kyuhyun.
Having won a Math Olympiad medal and known for his good student image, Kyuhyun
didn't get his father's approval to join the group at first.
It was only after Kyuhyun was admitted into a university that his father
reluctantly agreed.
However, his father's unsupportive attitude changed after a life-threatening
event.
One early morning in 2007, Kyuhyun and other band members were returning home
after a recording for a radio show.
Their van went out of control on a highway in Seoul and rolled over.
Kyuhyun suffered the most serious injuries, including multiple broken bones and
ribs and a pierced lung.
(Music).
(Chinese).
And now let's go to our teachers.
Thank you, Michelle.
Well, we are finally learning more about Kyuhyun's personal story today.
Of course he joined the band Super Junior in 2006, but his father was not
supportive right away.
Right. And why is that?
Perhaps because his father had other things in mind for his son to do.
That's a pretty common situation, right? Parents want their kids to go one
direction, but the kids have another dream.
Well, Kyuhyun could have succeeded in other areas had he chosen to go down those
roads.
He is very smart and would have perhaps become a lawyer if he didn't choose to
join Super Junior.
Really!
Well, we also learned from our lesson that he is good at math, too.
You have to be in order to join a Math Olympiad.
There are different kinds of Math Olympiads around the world, and basically they
are very big math contests.
And we read here that he won a Math Olympiad medal.
He won the bronze medal, actually, which is really good - third place.
And he is known for his good student image.
Now what is a good student image?
It's the impression that he gives other people about how good of a student he
is.
It's his reputation as a good student.
Yes. Your image is the way the public sees your personality.
It's important for celebrities to keep up or maintain a good image.
Hmm, my mom is concerned about my image.
Really?
Yeah. I don't shave every day. Sometimes I'll let my beard grow out a little
longer than she likes.
And then she says something like: Don't you worry about your image?
She is worried that people will think Studio Classroom's teacher doesn't take
care of himself.
Well, it's normal for a mother to want their kids to have a good image.
And I think Kyuhyun's father must feel the same way.
Now just before our break today, Liz explained the phrase: noted for something.
Well, that phrase "known for" is similar.
Yes. If you're known for something, that means you may be good at many things,
but there is one thing in particular that makes you famous or that everyone
knows about you.
If you're known for something, that is your reputation. And that could be good
or bad.
Ah, yes. Gabe, I can think of something that you might be known for.
Yes? Right, example... for example, I'm... I'm known for getting to places late.
Yes, although are you sure you want everyone to know about that?
Well... sure! You know, it's the truth.
I'm not happy or proud about it, but it's true.
And those who know me know that detail about me.
OK, you know, I'm also known for being outgoing and making friends easily.
So there, I've shared one negative thing and one positive thing that I'm known
for.
Well, friends, what are you known for?
Kyuhyun is known for being smart and having a good student image, so he didn't
get his father's approval to join the group right away.
Now what does it mean to have someone's approval for something?
That means they say it's OK to do it.
And that reminds me of an idiom that we learned in last month's lesson about
colors.
Do you know the one I'm thinking of?
I know. You're thinking about the idiom: to give the green light.
Yes. And that means to give approval to do something.
So we could say Kyuhyun's father didn't give him the green light right away.
He didn't give approval at first.
Yes. We read: It was only after Kyuhyun was admitted into a university that his
father reluctantly agreed.
So even then, he wasn't really supportive.
If you do something reluctantly, that means you don't do it with your full
heart.
Right. But Kyuhyun's father, his father's unsupportive attitude changed after a
life-threatening event.
Ooh. If someone is unsupportive, that means they don't support you or they don't
approve of something.
So Kyuhyun's father was unsupportive until something big happened.
There was a life-threatening event in his life.
And life-threatening is just what it sounds like - something that threatens your
life or puts you in danger.
Well, this is where our story gets exciting.
And if you are a Super Junior fan, and especially a Kyuhyun fan, you probably
know about this car accident already.
They were in a big van that went out of control on a highway in Seoul and rolled
over.
Wow, that sounds scary.
What does that mean, Gabe, to go out of control?
That means the driver couldn't control the van for some reason.
Sometimes other things can get out of control, too.
You might be in a heated discussion with someone, and you need to stop before it
gets out of control and you lose your temper.
Good example.
Well, in this car accident Kyuhyun suffered the most serious injuries, including
multiple broken bones and ribs and a pierced lung.
And that's it! That's the end of our lesson for today.
What a horrible way to end the lesson!
Well, that's not it.
We will finish the story tomorrow.
OK. Well, that's good.
Well, right now it's time for us to join Linda for the Editor's Summary.
Today we write about Super Junior and how they combine dance moves and hand
gestures with their music.
The hearts of ELF, or Ever Lasting Fans, from all over the world have been
captured since 2005 when Super Junior was formed.
Actually, when Kyuhyun joined, his father did not approve at all, that is until
he was admitted to a university.
But something changed all of that.
In 2007 a car accident left the youngest member of Super Junior with severe
injuries.
Thank you, Linda.
Well, I think we're beginning to understand why the beginning of this lesson
about Kyuhyun says: The miracle of a second life.
Yes. And I want to know how this story ends.
Will it have a happy ending?
It sounds very serious.
Although, if it's a miracle, it must be a good ending.
Yes, I think you're right about that, Carolyn.
So please do come back tomorrow and find out about the rest of the story here at
Studio Classroom.
See you then.
