Welcome back.
Today we're in the final part of our story about Super Junior's youngest member
Kyuhyun.
He was in a serious car accident that resulted in a pierced lung.
The doctor recommended opening a hole in Kyuhyun's throat to help his breathing,
but his father objected.
If Kyuhyun lives, how could he sing with a hole in his throat?
There must be another way to heal him.
But how?
Let's find out now.
(Music).
Super Junior's Kyuhyun.
"To protect my son's dream ..., I chose the operation through the stomach
instead," he recalls.
Upon hearing the news of Kyuhyun's car accident, Kyuhyun's church started
praying for him.
His speedy recovery amazed the doctors.
Going back on stage after just five months, Kyuhyun knew his recovery was a
miracle.
Now Kyuhyun always prays before any performance and attends Sunday church
services whenever he has the chance.
"I thank God for giving me a second life," Kyuhyun expressed after the accident.
(Music).
(Chinese).
And now let's go to our teachers.
Thank you, Michelle.
Wow, this was quite a dramatic story.
Yeah, I agree, and an encouraging one, too.
Now I understand why it's called the miracle of a second life.
Well, I think Kyuhyun not only thanks God but also his dad for his second life.
After all, his dad insisted that the doctor not open a hole in his throat.
There was another way in the end.
Yeah, the other end - through the stomach.
Kyuhyun had a dream to sing, and his father wanted to protect that dream, so he
chose the operation through the stomach.
Now if you look closely at that sentence in your magazine,
you see a couple of the dots in the middle of that sentence between "protect my
son's dream" and "I chose the operation." What does that mean?
Well, our author could not include the whole quote for some reason, and the dots
is how you separate two parts of a quote by adding three dots or periods.
Remember, this is... remember this the next time you are writing and need to do
something similar.
Good point.
Now let's review some of the characters we've seen.
First, of course, is Kyuhyun.
On the first day we met his father, too.
Then we learned about his band Super Junior a little.
And today we met the doctor in the hospital.
All of these people are significant in Kyuhyun's life.
And here we find out about another group of people who are included in this
story: Kyuhyun's church.
Yes. Now when I think of church, I think of family.
The church is family, or it should be, anyway.
So it's not surprising that his church started praying for him.
Right. Now before we continue, let's join Liz in the Grammar Gym to talk about
something from this sentence.
Hello, friends.
How are you doing today?
My name is Liz.
And thanks for joining me here at the Grammar Gym.
In today's lesson, we see this sentence:
Upon hearing the news of Kyuhyun's car accident, Kyuhyun's church started
praying for him.
That's our Grammar Tip sentence.
Notice the sentence pattern in today's sentence:
Upon [verb1-ing], [subject] started [verb2-ing].
This is a great sentence pattern to use when you want to talk about what someone
does the moment something happens.
So today's sentence means that when Kyuhyun's church heard the news of Kyuhyun's
car accident, the church started praying for him.
OK, let's have a look at some other example sentences.
Upon receiving his report card, the student shoved it into his book bag.
Or: Upon seeing the news on TV, Jim picked up his phone to tell his friend about
it.
If you have a copy of this month's magazine with you, be sure to check out
today's Grammar Tip section for more example sentences.
That's it for today, friends.
This is Liz from the Grammar Gym.
I'll see you next time.
Thanks, Liz.
So Kyuhyun's church began to pray for him.
And we read next: His speeding recovery amazed the doctors.
You know, I've heard of things like this happening before.
Oh. What do you mean?
Well, I mean someone might be suffering from a disease or be in the hospital
with a life-threatening injury.
The doctors say there's not much of a chance for recovery, but somehow still,
they recover.
I think a lot of that has to do with prayer.
Hmm, I think you're right.
Kyuhyun had a speedy recovery.
That means he recovered quickly.
And this amazed or surprised the doctors.
When experienced doctors are surprised at how fast someone is able to heal and
recover, we should stop and think maybe someone else was helping him.
And we read that Kyuhyun went back on stage after just five months.
So he knew this had to be a miracle.
Well, let's look at something in that sentence: on stage.
Now this is a special phrase that means more than just walking onto a stage.
Right. If it only meant that, our author would have written going back onto a
stage.
But the phrase "on stage" carries with it the idea of performing.
If you say you're going on stage, I don't have to ask, I know you will be
performing in some way.
Now if there is something on a stage that you need to get, but you won't perform
there, you need to say:
I'm going on the stage to get it or I'm going to the stage.
Again, if you tell us you're going on stage, without the word "the," we will
think you are performing.
And since our lesson says he went back on stage after five months, we know that
includes performing of some kind.
Well, now Kyuhyun always prays before any performance, before he goes on stage.
You know, he's not the only one who does this.
Many people stop to thank God every time they have a performance.
You're right.
And not just singers and actors, Jeremy Lin and many other athletes do the same
thing.
In fact, we do it as well at Studio Classroom.
Why? Because we want God to encourage you through our lessons.
And like Kyuhyun, we want to thank God for every chance to perform, or in our
case, teach.
And Kyuhyun also thanks God for giving him a second life.
And I think you know what he means by this.
He doesn't have two lives.
He now has a second chance at life.
Well, don't go away.
We don't want you to miss this opportunity to enjoy a review skit.
And then we'll see Linda for the Editor's Summary.
Doctor... my son was in an accident.
Is he OK?
And what is your son's name?
Junior! Super Junior!
Super Junior? Are you Super Senior?
Sorry. No. That's his band's name.
Oh, uh, band's name?
Yeah, you know, K-Pop.
K-Pop, you know, trademark gestures?
Sorry, Sorry, Sorry.
I'm sorry.
My son is noted for his penetrating voice.
He's a lead singer.
Sorry. Sorry, sorry. I don't know him.
He's received wide acclaim for his performances.
What's his name?
Kyuhyun, or Kyu, that's his nickname.
Let's see.
I'm sorry to tell you this, sir, but your son is dying.
Dying?
Yes. We need to open a hole in his throat to let him breathe.
No!
Yes. Even so, he only has a 20 percent chance of survival.
No!
Sign these papers, sir, and we'll begin the surgery.
My child has to sing.
He's a singer. That's his dream!
He needs this surgery.
But, then he can't sing, it would take his dream away. I refuse.
OK. But his recovery will take a miracle.
A miracle... that's it!
I'll ask our friends at church to pray.
When the doctor told Kyuhyun's father that his son would die without a certain
surgery, the father refused and asked him to find another way.
That is because his son would have lost his ability to sing.
The father instead chose an operation that would go through his stomach and save
Kyuhyun's voice.
His church also began to pray for him when they found out.
He recovered quickly to every one's great surprise.
And now Kyuhyun goes to Sunday church services regularly and prays before every
performance.
He is thankful for the second chance God has given him.
Thank you, Linda.
Well, this is really cool.
This story about the miracle of Kyuhyun's recovery makes me appreciate him more.
Me, too.
You know, it's always good to learn more about the personal lives of
celebrities.
They're not just idols on stage.
We can learn from their experiences and their attitudes.
Don't you agree, Carolyn?
I think that's very true.
And it's wonderful to see good role models, celebrities who are acting in
appropriate ways and getting good media attention.
That is very true.
Well, thank you for joining us today.
And we'll see you next time right here at Studio Classroom.
See you.
