Hi, everybody.
Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
Thanks for joining us today.
My name is Steve.
Well, you knew it was coming.
Yes, it's time once again to continue a Studio Classroom tradition where we give
you a taste of some of the movies you can expect to see in theaters this winter
holiday season.
Now unlike so many times in the past, none of the movies in this lesson are
sequels; nor are there any movies about comic book heroes.
That's amazing, right?
So if I had to pick a theme for the movies in this feature, for the first two
days anyway, I would say movies based on famous classic novels.
Let's find out more as we dig into the reading on page 14.
(Music).
Holiday Movies.
This season's holiday films aren't to be missed!
People will want to take plenty of breaks from their holiday preparations this
year to enjoy some great movies.
Hollywood is once again offering many films that are sure to entertain and
excite.
Several holiday films tell the stories of famous classic novels.
Anna Karenina, based on Leo Tolstoy's epic novel, stars Kiera Knightley.
When Anna (Knightley) questions her happiness, change comes to her family,
friends and community with tragic results.
(Music).
Hello, friends.
Thank you so much for joining us right here in the studio.
My name is Kaylah.
My name is Ryan.
And friends, twice a year we enjoy bringing you articles all about movies.
That's right.
Today we are looking at our December holiday movies article.
Well, this season the holiday films aren't to be missed.
Now if something is not to be missed, that means you should do it or you should
see it because it's going to be awesome.
That's right.
Now people will want to take plenty of breaks from their holiday preparations
this year to enjoy some great movies.
Now I know it is the holiday season.
It's almost time for Christmas and New Year, so you are probably doing a lot of
holiday preparation.
Now the word "preparation," you can see the word "prepare" in there.
And that's because preparation means to make plans or arrangements to get ready
for something or to prepare for something.
It's making those plans and getting everything together.
Ryan, when you have a holiday party, you definitely need to be prepared.
We're going to talk about that later this month.
Exactly. So the adjective is to be "prepared;" and the noun here is
"preparations." That is what you are doing to get ready.
Well, we're going to take a break from our preparations this year because
Hollywood is once again offering films that are sure to entertain and excite.
Now this, I think, is why everyone loves talking about these movie articles and
then going to watch these movies because they excite.
That's right.
And to excite means they bring you energy and you're ready and happy to go see
them.
Now Ryan, we say once again Hollywood does this.
Really at Christmastime in December, Hollywood puts out a lot of really great
movies.
Yes, it's true.
In fact, several holiday films here tell several different stories this year,
most of them from famous classic novels.
Now "classic" means they are older and people recognize them, and usually you
would have read them in high school or in university.
These are... these are novels or stories, books that are famous and have been
around for a long time because they're so good.
Exactly.
A novel, like you said, tells a story, usually a story that is fictitious, which
means it did not actually happen in real life.
But most of them are very well-known and are classic.
Well, the first movie we're talking about is just one of those - Anna Karenina.
Now this is based on Leo Tolstoy's epic novel, and it stars Keira Knightley.
Now I think this looks awesome, Kaylah.
I can't wait to see this because it's actually based on an epic novel here.
Yes. To be "epic" mean that's the events that are happening... happens over a
long period of time and usually is very exciting.
There's a lot of action.
There's problems and difficulty, and they overcome them.
Something that is epic would be exciting to watch, especially in a movie.
And this one is definitely epic.
Yes. And usually, Kaylah, things that are epic are not only exciting but are
very big or very grand.
And there are a lot of epic movies coming out this holiday season.
Well, Anna Karenina is one of them.
Well, this is a story of Anna.
And this is... she's played by Knightley.
Friends, in your magazine you will see Anna and then parentheses the actor's
last name, this is telling you which actor is playing which character.
OK. So her character is played by Keira Knightley here.
And her character questions her own happiness, and then change comes to her
family, friends and community with tragic results.
That's right.
So she's going to question her happiness.
That means she is wondering if she is really happy.
Is this what she wants out of life?
Is she happy in what she's doing?
I don't know.
Yeah. So if you question something, that means you are not sure if you agree
with it or if you think it's true.
That's right..
And she is actually a woman of power.
She is married to a powerful politician; he's in politics, in government.
So when she starts questioning things in her life, changes her family and her
friends, but also the community.
Exactly.
The community is a group of people that work together, usually live together and
understand and help each other.
And when you're in a position of power like the government, when something you
question changes your life, it affects the people around you.
And that's what's going to happen to her community.
And it actually ends with some pretty tragic results.
Now friends, this is sad because the word "tragic" means something that is
extremely sad.
That's right.
And the results are what ends up happening.
So it's going to be kind of a sad story, but don't let that scare you away from
seeing it.
The preview is amazing.
Make sure you take time to look at it because it's beautiful, and it's going to
really encourage you to watch this movie.
Yes, it really is a beautiful trailer.
And that way, we know the movie will be beautiful too.
That's because a movie trailer is just a short clip that shows a lot of shots
from the movie.
That's right.
It kind of teases you.
It makes you interested to go see this movie because it tells you a little bit
of the story and shows just how amazing the video work is done.
So watching this movie trailer or any movie trailer is going to give you an idea
of what the movie will be like.
And we hope that as we show you some trailers today, tomorrow and, well, the
last day of this article that you'll decide to watch some of these holiday
favorites.
Well, this is definitely a classic novel, an epic story.
And we're going to talk about another epic, classic novel movie coming up after
we visit the Chat Room.
(Music).
Hi, Ken.
Anything interesting in the newspaper today?
Oh hi, Bryan. I'm just checking what's playing in the movie theaters.
Oh. Well, I hear this holiday's movies aren't to be missed.
Yeah. There are several pretty interesting movies.
Wow! This movie theater even has martinis.
Martinis?
Really?
That's what it says: Special martinis $6.
Oh. No, Ken.
It's not martini.
It's matinee.
Matinee? So it's not a drink?
No, Ken.
Hey, why don't we go to Studio Classroom Editor-in-Chief Doris for an
explanation.
OK.
The word "matinee" is from French, meaning morning.
So a matinee is a movie or show presented at anytime of the day before the
evening.
Tickets to a matinee are often at a discount.
Oh, so it's a French word.
That's right.
And matinee shows are cheaper than evening shows.
So if you want to save money, go for a matinee.
Hmm, it sounds like a good deal even though there aren't any martinis to drink.
Sorry.
They only have soft drinks at the theater.
