OK, everybody, I hope you had a great break.
The movie Life of Pi is shot completely in 3D.
Director Ang Lee said he hopes using this technology will help take viewers "to
the sea" so they can feel for themselves the relationship between humankind and
their beliefs.
OK. Let's finish up reading about Life of Pi.
We'll pick up the reading on line 11.
(Music).
Holliday Movies.
He survives a shipwreck and ends up in a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger for a
companion.
The film's special effects promise to be amazing.
Those looking for an adventure should look no further than The Hobbit: An
Unexpected Journey.
This first of two films based on the book by JRR Tolkien tells the story of
hobbit Bilbo Baggins.
He and his companions travel to Lonely Mountain.
They plan to get back a treasure stolen by the dragon Smaug.
(Music).
Today we already looked at the story of The Great Gatsby, and it's a movie
coming out starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
Well, we've moved on into our next film called The Life of Pi.
Now Ryan, we said he goes... he travels from India across the Pacific Ocean.
But what happens?
All right.
Well, yeah, he's traveling.
He worked in a zoo.
He left a zoo, and so... as he was traveling, he survived a shipwreck and ended
up in a lifeboat.
That's right.
Now "to survive" means you live, you are still alive, you have not died.
A... he survived during a shipwreck.
That's impressive.
OK. Now friends, we've talked about what a shipwreck is before, but we'll
redefine it for you here.
Shipwreck means a ship crashes and sinks.
That's right.
Now he survives and ends up in a lifeboat.
When you "end up" in something, that means this is where you have found
yourself.
After a lot of things have happened, this is where you are now.
He's in a lifeboat, which is a small boat, and that's interesting because he's
with a Bengal tiger.
Ah, Bengal tiger.
We've talked about tigers recently, friends.
We know they are beautiful but dangerous creatures.
And you would not want to be stuck in a small boat designed to save your life in
the middle of the ocean with nothing but a tiger for a companion.
That's right.
Now friends, if you look at page 15 in your Studio Classroom magazine in the
upper right-hand corner, you can see a picture of Pi in a lifeboat with a big
tiger.
It's definitely difficult when the tiger is your only companion.
Well, yeah.
And now tiger, we know, can be dangerous.
But here we see it's his companion.
A "companion" is like a friend.
They go through things with you and spend a lot of time with you.
That's right.
Usually we use this term when we are referring to travel.
So it makes sense; companion is someone who's with you a lot.
You spend a lot of time with them.
Well, the film's special effects promise to be amazing.
All right. Now I love special effects in movies.
The word "special" means something is unique.
And the word "effect" means the way that something is produced, the way that
something looks.
So when we put those words together, what does that mean?
Well, it usually means... it refers to film or stage or some sort of
performance, and it's action using technology.
So they use technology to make something even better.
OK. So they use things like computer animation.
Or even older movies used to build models of things, and they would film it in a
way that made it look real.
Those are special effects.
That's right.
It makes the movie interesting and exciting.
You can also do it on a stage using special techniques.
Now these special effects are promising to be amazing.
Now "promise" here means we are expecting them to be - and they're going to be -
amazing.
All right.
If something is "amazing," you've probably heard this word before, friends, it
means it is incredible or fantastic.
It's very, very good.
That's right.
So this adventure is definitely going to be one you want to follow, with the
special effects, an interesting story of a man and a tiger stuck in a small
boat.
Yeah. I think we'll be surprised by this movie.
Now we're going to move on to the next and one of the biggest releases, I think,
that's coming out this holiday season.
That's right.
Now those of us looking for an adventure should look no further than The Hobbit:
An Unexpected Journey.
Ooh.
Well, we have some information about this sentence.
But first we want to go with Liz with Grammar on the Go, and we'll be right
back.
Hello, friends.
I hope you're doing well today.
My name is Liz.
And it's time for Grammar on the Go.
Our article today is on movies that people can see during this holiday season.
According to the writer:
Those looking for an adventure should look no further than The Hobbit...
That's our Grammar Tip sentence.
Notice the phrase: looking for.
Normally when we use "looking for," we're talking about trying to find
something, like:
I'm looking for my keys; I don't know where they are.
But in today's sentence, "looking for" has a different meaning.
Here it means expecting.
In other words, today's sentence just means those who want to see an adventure
movie should look no further than The Hobbit.
So you can use "to look for" when you want to talk about how someone wants to
experience something. For example:
Sophie doesn't care if the party is fancy or casual; she is just looking for a
good time.
Or: You must be looking for trouble if you think you could just walk into a
neighborhood full of gangsters.
So friends, give this phrase a try.
And if you'd like to see some more example sentences, they're availabe in
today's Grammar Tip section in your Studio Classroom magazine.
That's it for today.
This is Liz with Grammar on the Go signing off.
Bye-bye.
Friends, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is one of the most anticipated movies
for me this holiday season.
That's right.
We see the title of it is "The Hobbit." Now this is a book.
We're going to talk about that in a second.
And we have this title "An Unexpected Journey." To be unexpected means you're
not looking for it or thinking it will happen.
Now what is a journey?
All right.
Well, a "journey" is traveling between... from one place to another.
It's usually a very long journey, a very long travel.
So both this... the movie The Life of Pi and The Hobbit are about long journeys,
about long trips.
OK. Now the hobbit, first of all, is a character from the book, just like a
person, but they're much smaller.
That's right.
Now this is actually the first of two films that are based on the book by JRR
Tolkien.
And it tells the story of the hobbit Bilbo Baggins.
OK. Now you might remember JRR Tolkien from The Lord of the Rings.
Those movies are also very famous; and they came out before.
And Bilbo Baggins is our lead character.
And he and his companions are going to travel to Lonely Mountain.
And this is set in a made-up place called Middle-earth.
Exactly.
Now there, at that mountain, they plan to get back a treasure that was stolen by
a dragon, which is a large creature that doesn't really exist.
And his name is Smaug.
Now friends, I have read this book when I was in school.
It's amazing.
And we're going to talk more about this movie later in the month when we talk
about the upcoming actor who's in it.
But we want you to see just how incredible it will be, so let's watch the
trailer for right now.
(Music).
My dear Frodo, you asked me once if I had told you everything there was to know
about my adventures.
While I can honestly say I have told you the truth, I may not have told you all
of it.
Bilbo Baggins, I'm looking for someone to share in an adventure.
I can't just go running off into the blue!
I'm a Baggins, (Wait!) of Bag End.
Bilbo, allow me to introduce Fili, Kili, Oin, Gloin, Dwalin, Balin, Bifur,
Bofur, Bombur, Dori, Nori, Ori,
and the leader of our company, Thorin Oakenshield.
Far over, the misty mountains cold.
To dungeons deep and caverns old.
The pines were roaring on the height.
The winds were moaning in the night.
The fire was red, it flaming spread.
The trees like torches blazed with light.
I cannot guarantee his safety.
Understood.
Nor will I be responsible for his fate.
(Music).
You'll have a tale or two to tell when you come back.
Can you promise that I will come back?
No.
And if you do, you will not be the same.
(Music).
My name is Bilbo Baggins.
Bagginses? What is a Bagginses?
Precious.
(Music).
(Chinese).
And that concludes our Language Tips today.
I'll see you tomorrow.
Bye-bye.
(Music).
"Why do you like watching movies?" When asked this question, a lot of people
answer:
Easy! Films are entertaining.
Going a little deeper, though, another recurring answer that I find interesting
is:
Movies allow me to escape the world around me even if it's for just an hour or
two.
Well, what about you?
Friends, visit our Studio Classroom Chat Room and tell us why you love movies so
much.
And then be sure to join us tomorrow for four more films you won't want to miss
this holiday season.
I hope the rest of your Tuesday is great.
Take care.
