Hi, everybody.
Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
My name is Steve.
Thanks for taking time out of your busy day to study English with us.
We appreciate that.
Well, two times a year movie theaters do their best business: once during the
summer holiday, and then again during the winter holiday season.
Knowing this, movie studios work extra hard to attract audiences by releasing
movies with the biggest stars,
the most exciting action, the most amazing special effects and the funniest
laughs.
So then, let's continue with this season's can't-miss holiday films.
Today we'll veer away from movies based on classic books by highlighting a film
made by the same people that brought us Kung Fu Panda and Shrek.
Let's read now about the Rise of the Guardians on page 15.
(Music).
Holiday Movies.
In Rise of the Guardians, favorite children's characters Santa Claus, the Easter
Bunny and others work together.
They must stop the evil bogeyman from bringing the world into darkness.
James Bond fans have been waiting for his 23rd adventure.
Skyfall has Agent 007's trust in M tested as events in her past become known.
Two comedies will keep people laughing.
In Parental Guidance, Billy Crystal and Bette Midler play Artie and Diane.
Their daughter asks them to care for their three grandchildren.
(Music).
Hello, friends.
Thank you so much for joining us right here in the studio.
My name is Kaylah.
My name is Ryan.
Friends, we love movies.
And for the last couple days, we've been talking about some of the popular
movies that are coming out this holiday season.
That's right.
So far we've talked about very epic, adventurous, very exciting stories all
based off of classic literature.
Now Ryan, these stories aren't really for kids.
Mainly the movies we've been talking about are for adults and older teenagers.
But we're... there are still some things coming out for families.
That's right.
Friends, maybe you don't enjoy epic tales or novels that are about drama and
romance.
Maybe you want something a little more fun.
That's right.
Maybe you're looking for something for the entire family.
Well, in Rise of the Guardians, favorite children's characters Santa Claus and
the Easter Bunny and some of their other friends are going to work together.
So this will be a great place for kids to see a movie.
OK. So even though it's the Christmas season, we're talking about many different
characters.
One of those, of course, is Santa Claus.
We know it is Christmas; but also the Easter Bunny as well as other characters.
And we're calling them the guardians.
The title of this is Rise of the Guardians.
Now a "guardian" is someone who has the legal right and responsibility to take
care of someone who cannot take care of themselves.
So if you are a child, and maybe your parents... they are parents that taking
care of you, they would be your guardian.
But even more than that, Ryan, this is not about a parent/child relationship.
What is this like?
Well, look in the word "guardian," you will also see the word "guard" in the
beginning.
That means to protect.
So these characters are going to protect the children of the world.
Now Kaylah, I don't know about you, but the title The Rise of the Guardians
sounds pretty epic.
It's surprising it has anything to do with Santa Claus.
That's right.
Uh, the "rise" means that they're coming up.
They're going to do something impressive.
And it's going to be fun.
The trailer is very... I laughed.
I thought the trailer was very funny.
Yeah, it's very cute.
And so here they need to rise in order to stop the evil bogeyman from bringing
the world into darkness.
OK. We have two words here.
We have evil and bogeyman.
Now "evil" is someone that is extremely bad, very cruel or very mean.
He's the most awful person there is.
And so of course you need a bad person, an evil person so you can have good
people to save the day.
Exactly. In most stories, there are the good people, and then there are the bad
people, so.
The bogeyman is an evil character; he's very bad.
And "bogeyman," we actually talked about this earlier this year.
A bogeyman is a made-up character.
He's imaginary.
And he's an evil person who comes and they start to harm children.
Maybe as a child, you are afraid of someone in your closet or under your bed
that might be the bogeyman.
So he's made up, but he's going to be our villain, our evil person in our story.
Exactly. And he wants to bring the world into darkness.
He wants to make it dark and scary and more evil.
So the guardians are going to help keep happiness and joy and fun in children's
lives by protecting them from this imaginary character.
And of course, this will be an interesting story to watch.
Yeah. I think it looks like a lot of fun.
Now we do have another more epic and adult film coming up next.
That's right.
We're going to look at Bond, James Bond.
Oh, yes, James Bond.
We talked about him last month, and you might be a fan.
That's right.
He is the mystery man, the man of mystery, Agent 007.
Well, his 23rd film is coming out.
And the fans, or people who love him, are excited and waiting for this
adventure.
Exactly.
We're ready for this exciting adventure.
And his character now will be once again played by Daniel Craig.
You can see a picture of him down on the bottom of page 16.
That's right.
He comes out in his new movie called Skyfall.
And Skyfall has Agent 007's trust in M tested as events in her past become
known.
Now Ryan, these are weird names for characters.
Exactly.
Now we see the one character, her name is M.
And so it's a letter.
But in British Intelligence, they use those letters as code names.
That's right.
Now M is one of his authority, one of his bosses.
She's kind of in charge of him.
And his trust will be tested.
And here we call him 007.
OK. Now if you test someone's trust, that means you give them a reason not to
trust you.
Well, we have talked about some big action adventure epic movies.
Now let's look at a comedy.
All right.
Now this is exciting because many people love comedies.
"Comedies" are films or books or plays that are meant to be funny.
They're very happy and funny.
That's right.
Either the characters or the story should make you laugh.
Well, there are two comedies that are going to keep people laughing.
All right. The first one is called Parental Guidance.
And in this movie, Billy Crystal and Bette Midler play Artie and Diane.
That's right.
Now these are two famous actors who maybe are a little older now, but they're
famous for their comedies.
Well, in it, their daughter is going to ask them to care for their three
grandchildren.
And this is sure to be an entertaining film.
We'll see why right after we visit the Chat Room.
So, what are your plans for this afternoon, Ken?
You know the matinee shows you were telling me about the other day?
Well, I'm taking my son to a matinee show.
Oh, that's wonderful.
So which show are you thinking of going to?
Hmm... I don't know.
Robot Destroyers looks pretty good.
Ken, I don't know about that one.
I don't think you should take your son to see it.
It's rated R.
Rated R?
What do you mean?
If a movie is rated R, it's restricted.
An R-rated movie may contain some adult material, violence or bad language.
It's not suitable for your son.
Wow, I'm glad you pointed that out.
So what's the rating that's suitable for my son?
G, which refers to general audiences.
I see.
What other ratings are there?
There's also PG and PG-13.
What does PG stand for?
Parental guidance.
So some material in PG-rated movies may be considered unsuitable for children.
So parents should offer guidance for their kids if they let their kids see a
movie that's rated PG?
Yes. That's the general idea.
And PG-13 means not suitable for kids under 13?
Yes, you got it.
So which one is more strict, PG or PG-13?
PG-13.
I might take elementary school kids to a movie rated PG but not one that's rated
PG-13.
Hey, here's one that looks just right for my son, Wreck-it Ralph.
Ah, yes.
I think your son will enjoy that one of a lot more.
