OK, everybody.
Welcome back from break.
We're looking at five smartphone apps that could change your life.
OK, maybe we're exaggerating just a little bit.
But at the very least, they will improve your productivity.
And after you've used them for a while, you may wonder how you ever lived
without them.
Now onto app number three, Office work, starting on line 13.
Five Apps That Could Change Your Life.
Office work.
Now that you've moved all of your files to your phone, you'll need a way to work
on them.
Apps like iWork and Quickoffice let you create and edit Microsoft Office files
on your phone.
MindMeister.
Are you a visual thinker?
MindMeister gives you a great way to organize your ideas by creating useful mind
maps.
Timesheeter.
Are you self-employed or just in need of a better way to manage your time?
Timesheeter allows you to schedule projects, record the time and money spent on
them, and analyze the results.
(Music).
Friends, we're giving you some tips on how you can be more productive using your
smartphone or tablet computer with these five useful apps.
Now we've already told you about the first two: Evernote and Box.
Now both of these offered you ways to share and between your different devices -
your phone, your computer - and with other people using the Internet.
Now we're going to talk more about some of these files - how you can work on
your files using your smartphone.
Right.
What if you are in an office and you need to be writing documents and sharing
files even with other people in the office?
You want to be able to do office work.
OK. So you've used one of these apps to get files onto your phone.
But now you need to work on them.
And your phone is actually not made to do work on these kinds of documents.
So what are you going to do?
You need an app like iWork and Quickoffice that will let you create and edit
these... these files on your phone.
Yeah. You can create and edit Microsoft Office files on your phone.
Now Microsoft Office is the application on computers that most employees around
the world use when they're creating documents.
That's right.
That includes Microsoft Documents, and that's Outlook and all these different
programs we use daily on our work computers.
Now you can do them on your smartphone by adding one of these... these different
programs like Apple's iWork.
Exactly.
So Apple's iWork works on things like an iPhone or an iPad.
And also on iPhones you can have Quickoffice.
And it works on Android and Windows phone and all those other smartphones as
well.
OK, so, great.
Now we have our files, we can work on our files.
Now what if we want something that will help change our lives and help creating,
getting basic ideas?
Well, start with the MindMeister.
That's right.
MindMeister helps you in your thinking and brainstorming, which is how you come
up with creative ideas.
Well, are you a visual thinker?
Now "visual" means you are using your eyes.
"Visual" means anything to do with seeing.
Just like "audio" is with your ears, "visual" is with your eyes.
So what does it mean to think with your eyes?
Well, exactly.
If you are a usual thinker, that means that you see pictures in your head,
and you remember things by the way they look easier than other facts or things
like that.
That's right.
Sometimes, if you're a visual thinker, you might be... in a test, and you can
picture the page with the answer on it in your head.
That means you're a visual thinker.
I know I'm a visual thinker.
I think in pictures, so MindMeister might be able to help me.
It would give you a great way to organize your ideas by creating useful mind
maps.
That's right.
So it helps you organize or keep things in the right place by helping you use
creative ideas and creating new things by using a mind map.
OK. Now a "mind map" is called a diagram.
And that simply means it organizes information visually. See that?
So you have some information with circles and lines connecting it to other
pieces of information.
Now we've talked about brainstorming before.
This is kind of your own little private way to brainstorm.
You get your ideas out on a piece of paper, you draw them in circles.
I don't think an app like this would be so much good for me because my lines are
never straight when I'm thinking.
My lines are all cricked and all over the place.
But maybe something like this could help you keep everything organized.
Yeah, especially as a visual thinker because it's visual.
You can see the circles and lines and how they all connect.
OK. Our last recommendation, our number five app to change your life is
Timesheeter.
Timesheeter.
Now are you self-employed or just in need of a better way to manage your time?
"Self-employed" means you work for yourself.
And managing your time means you use your time well.
Well, do you?
OK. Well, if you don't, maybe you have trouble with this,
Timesheeter will allow you to schedule projects, record the time and money spent
on them, and analyze the results.
That's right.
It basically helps you keep track of your own issues, keep track of your own
projects so that you know when they're due,
how much it's costing and how to improve so you can get through it better, have
it done on time.
And then when you're done, you can analyze the results.
And when you analyze something, that means you look and research what happened
in order to make better decisions in the future.
And the results are what happened in the end.
So it'll help you stay organized.
Now friends, I hope these five apps are apps you can use to help improve your
life, to make yourself more efficient and to do things wisely.
Yes.
Take a look in your smartphone's app store and try these out for yourself.
Friends, that's all the time we have for now.
But let's go visit the Information Station.
(Music).
Bryan, it's incredible how helpful smartphones can be with the right apps.
That's right, Bill.
Smartphones can save a lot of time and trouble.
So to look at a couple more useful apps, let's head over to...
Information Station.
Have you ever gotten lost?
Well, download MapQuest 4 Mobile and you can get maps, directions and even
spoken instructions with this app to help you find what you're looking for.
Speaking of getting lost, it's easy to get lost when visiting another city or
country.
And I know many of our viewers travel overseas.
To learn about the new city or country that you are visiting, the Relief Central
app puts the entire CIA Factbook into your phone.
That way, you can find out important information about foreign places.
It's very helpful when traveling abroad.
Another app that is helpful when traveling abroad is the XE Currency Converter.
You can find out money exchange rates in 180 countries.
That way, you'll know if you are paying too much for something in a strange
land.
How about if you meet lots of new people, and they ask for your business card?
There are a couple of apps that eliminate the need to carry business cards.
The Bump app allows you to touch phones with another person and exchange contact
information automatically.
And finally, what if I lose my smartphone?
If you have the SmrtGuard app, you can track your phone to find where it is.
And it allows you to lock your phone so nobody can use it or access your
information.
Well, that's useful information, Bill.
And that's our job here at...
Information Station.
(Chinese).
And we're running out of time again.
I'll see you soon.
Bye-bye.
Thank you, Michelle.
Now just two years ago, the little three-letter word "app" was voted Word of the
Year.
So if you study English, you have to know this important word.
Yes, with the right apps, smartphones can be a powerful tool to organize your
life.
And I really don't think it's a stretch to say that an app can change a person's
life.
I actually know a few people whose lives were changed by an app.
Not in a huge way, but changed nonetheless.
What about you?
Friends, if your life was changed by an app, log on to our Studio Classroom
website or visit us on Facebook and tell us about it.
We'd love to hear from you.
Well, have a great Thursday, and we'll see you all tomorrow.
Take care.
