Hi, everybody.
Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
Thanks for joining us today.
My name is Steve.
Well, this month's TECHNOLOGY feature highlights software, software designed for
your smartphone or tablet.
And it's more commonly known as the app, APP.
Now it is estimated that over 11.2 billion apps have already been downloaded and
installed,
which means chances are good you've probably got a few apps yourself.
Now with hundreds of thousands of apps to choose from, you might feel a little
overwhelmed when you're trying to figure out which ones are good.
Well, fear not.
We've sifted through a bunch and handpicked five that we think are pretty good.
So let's turn to page 17 and begin reading about Five Apps That Could Change
Your Life.
Five Apps That Could Change Your Life.
Improve your productivity with these five smartphone apps.
A smartphone can be a powerful tool to organize your life - if it contains the
right applications.
Whether you're a student or a professional, these five apps have demonstrated an
ability to help you work productively and efficiently.
Evernote.
A powerful note-taking application, Evernote lets you integrate documents,
pictures and audio files into your notes.
The app also lets you access your notes just about anywhere - through your
phone, tablet, computer or a web service.
Box.
Box gives you a fantastic way to storage large files online and to access them
anywhere.
Box gives you control over who can access and edit your files, making it great
for online cooperation.
(Music).
Hello, friends. Thank you so much for joining us here in the studio.
My name is Kaylah.
My name is Ryan.
Friends, we have some technological advice for you today.
Most of you have some kind of smartphone or maybe a tablet computer like an
iPad, and you use apps on that computer.
That's right.
But did you know that apps are not just for fun?
Today we're talking about five specific apps, or applications, that could change
your life.
That's right.
Even though smartphones can have games, and they can be a lot of fun,
you can actually improve your productivity with just these five simple
smartphone apps.
OK. So productivity is how well you are working.
Are you getting your work done?
Or do the apps on your smartphone or tablet take up too much fun time and you're
not being productive?
So let's increase it by adding the right apps.
Exactly. Now we know that a smartphone can be a really powerful tool to organize
your life.
I don't know, Ryan. Can it?
Actually, well yeah. I use a smartphone all the time.
I think it's not just for fun and talking with other people.
Of course, you can communicate with people at work like your boss.
But you can also, well, write documents, you can help send things in e-mails.
It can be very powerful.
That's right.
You know, it can be a powerful tool, but it needs to contain the right
applications to do that.
If you're doing just games and fun activities, maybe different readings and
games and music and videos and all the fun things we like other smartphones,
then you're not going to be productive.
Instead, you will be wasting your time.
So add these apps to help you out.
Exactly.
And we're using words like apps and applications.
Those, of course, if you remember from a few months ago, are just small programs
on a computer, or in this case, a smartphone.
So whether you're a student or a professional, these five apps can help
demonstrate...
have demonstrated the ability to help you work productively and efficiently.
OK, so.
These are some powerful apps that we're going to show you because they have
demonstrated a strong effect in helping you stay productive.
Now to "demonstrate" means to show or to make clear.
So they have shown their ability to help.
Exactly, so.
And they've shown how they can help improve productivity and efficiency.
Efficiency is how well and how quickly you're able to do something.
"Productive" means you're doing the work, you're getting it done.
"Efficiently" means you're doing it in a good time.
You're doing it timely and correctly.
OK. So let's start showing you these five popular apps that can help you do your
work faster and better.
Number one: Evernote.
Now Evernote is a powerful note-taking application.
Evernote lets you integrate documents, pictures and audio files into your notes.
All right.
So this is an note application.
It helps you, well, create and remember things through notes.
And the way it does that is to integrate things like documents and pictures and
audio.
Now I think Evernote actually is good for doing presentations as well.
So it's important that you have these other pieces integrated into documents.
Now to "integrate" something means to combine two or more things.
So you're putting them all together.
And our different things here are documents, pictures, audio files.
And we're adding those, integrating them, putting them into notes.
Exactly. And things that are integrated are more efficient because they are
combined.
So this makes it better.
And of course, documents, which is... things that are written.
It's usually a written document like a piece of paper.
Those are integrated as well as pictures and audio files.
Well, "audio" means having to do with sound.
Anything audio can be heard.
So these are the hearing files, music or recordings.
Well, we have more information on this.
So let's visit Liz with Grammar on the Go.
Hi there, friends.
Welcome to Grammar on the Go.
My name is Liz.
Our article today talks about apps that can make a difference in your life.
And we read:
A powerful note-taking application, Evernote lets you integrate documents,
pictures and audio files into your notes.
That's our Grammar Tip sentence.
There are two parts to this sentence.
Part one: Evernote is a powerful note-taking application.
Part two: Evernote lets you integrate documents, pictures and audio files into
your notes.
Since both parts share the same subject - Evernote - we don't have to repeat the
subject when we combine the two parts together.
And that's how we have the sentence for today.
Let's practice a bit.
Part one: Toby is an ambitious businessman.
Part two: Toby is always working long hours and doing more than his coworkers.
Put the two together and what do you get?
An ambitious businessman, Toby is always working long hours and doing more than
his coworkers.
Or how about this:
Part one: Hank's new gadget is always breaking down.
Part two: Hank's new gadget has proven to be unreliable.
Put the two together and we have:
Always breaking down, Hank's new gadget has proven to be unreliable.
So friends, give this a try.
Think of a subject and come up with two descriptions about it.
Then try combining the two together.
One more reminder, this sentence pattern is best used in formal situations.
And that's it for today.
This is Liz with Grammar on the Go signing off.
Bye-bye.
All right.
Now Evernote also lets you access your notes just about anywhere - through your
phone, tablet, computer or a web service.
Well, Evernote is not the only one that does that.
Our next one does it as well - Box.
Box gives you a fantastic way to store large files online and access them
anywhere.
All right. It is "fantastic." That means it's extremely good or extremely
useful.
That's right.
Box gives you control over who can access and edit your files, making it great
for online cooperation.
OK. So this is a way for you to see all your files between your phone, your
computer, anything, any device that you have.
And you can share them even with other people.
That's right.
It's a great way to communicate online using large files.
It's fantastic.
Well, we have three more apps to look at after we visit the Chat Room.
So Ken, what did you think of the lecture last night?
Oh, I thought it was great.
You know, I think the library should hold more lectures in the future.
Well, we've got a whole bunch of lectures lined up for next year.
Well, next time I'll be sure to bring a notebook and take note.
Notes. You take "notes," plural.
Take notes?
But I heard somebody telling someone to take note the other day.
Oh. Well, that's a different expression.
"To take note" means to remember something or take notice of something.
I might tell you to take note that there's road construction going on somewhere,
so you might want to avoid driving there.
I see.
What about mental note?
What's that?
That is similar.
If you want to remember something that requires special attention, you make a
mental note.
OK, make a mental note.
So if my wife tells me to pick up some milk on the way home, I should make a
mental note?
Yes. That's a great example.
Taking notes, on the other hand, is to write down important things in a
notebook.
I see.
So next time when the library holds a lecture, I'll be sure to bring a notebook
and take notes.
There you go.
