Welcome back from the break, everyone.
Well, James Greenwood has a little secret he'd like to share with us.
He says it doesn't matter how thin you are, how much healthy foods you eat or
how often you exercise,
all the benefits of those things are cancelled out when you spend the majority
of your time sitting on your keester.
OK. Let's hear more from James Greenwood and see what he says about being active
at the office over at the top of page 20.
(Music).
Can Your Desk Help You Lose Weight?
He said he's tried everything from sitting on an exercise ball at his desk to
biking and walking on his lunch breaks to stay active and alert in the office.
"I think any time you get a chance to do something to break up your day or do
something at work, it's wonderful," he said.
Greenwood transferred to Caldrea five months ago,
and he said he's already seen how working for a company that "invests in his
health" - Caldrea offers catered organic lunches and group-fitness outings - can
improve office life.
"Employees are definitely engaged," he said.
(Music).
Friends, we're looking at studies to help you lose weight and live a healthier
lifestyle even if you sit at the office a lot.
Now we've been discussing James Greenwood and his health and how he's been
working to improve it: by using treadmills and taking walking breaks instead of
lunch.
But he said he's tried just about everything, and he's going to list some
options here.
That's right.
He's tried sitting on an exercise ball at his desk.
He's also tried biking and walking during lunch breaks.
OK. Well, and we see first he tried sitting on an exercise ball.
Friends, Ryan and I are both sitting on exercise balls right now.
They are very large, inflatable balls.
They're made of rubber, and you put air in them.
But they're very tall.
So when you sit on them, you can actually sit at your desk height and still type
on your computer.
But it's better for your health.
It helps your back, and your stomach muscles stay strong.
Exactly, so.
They are called exercise balls because they help you, well, exercise.
You can sit at your desk, and they still use all of your muscles.
That's right.
They're also used for different kinds of exercise like yoga and different
stretching activities.
You can use them for many different purposes.
Well, he's tried this as well as biking and taking walks on his lunch break
instead of just eating.
OK. Yeah. Lunch break is the time that you have during work to take a break and
go eat lunch.
And so he would walk or ride bikes during that break to stay active and alert
while he was in the office.
Now active means you're up and you're moving around instead of just spending all
of your time sitting down.
And he wanted to stay alert as well.
"Alert" means you're not just sitting there and working.
It means you're very much awake.
Yes. You're paying attention to what is happening around you.
Now what does James say here, Kaylah?
Well, he said that I think any time to get a chance to do something to break up
your day or do something at work, it's wonderful.
Now what does it mean to break up your day?
All right.
Now I remember talking about this phrase when we were referring to
relationships.
But this is a different use.
If you break up your day, that means you cut it into sections, so you're doing
different things throughout the day not just one big thing.
That's right.
You need to do something different at work, to help you have... another word
would be a variety of things.
You have many different things you can do.
Well, sitting on these exercise balls is different than standing, and it's
different than sitting.
It helps you have different varieties.
And that's good.
It helps you stay awake, alert and active at the office.
Exactly.
And like Greenwood says, "it's wonderful." He transferred to Caldrea five months
ago.
You remember Caldrea is the company where this study is taking place.
That's right.
So he transferred there.
That means he got... he got hired to that company or to that branch of Caldrea.
And he says he's already seen some... how... how working at a company that
invests in your health is really good for you.
Yeah, exactly.
And so here we see that the company is investing in their health.
What does that mean?
Well, usually to invest means we put money in towards something.
Well, that's kind of what it means here as well.
You're putting in money but you're also putting in effort.
You are interested in.
You are working towards helping something - and that's helping your employees
have good health.
Well, Caldrea offers different things to help with that.
Exactly. We see that this company invests in health... in people's health, and
that can improve office life.
But how do they do it?
Well, first of all, they offer catered organic lunches, and they have
group-fitness outings.
Well, a cater... what does it mean to have catered food?
Ah. Well, anything that is "catered" means it is provided, is given to you,
usually served from an outside place.
That's right.
Now usually you think, well, you go to the office and you either take your own
lunch or you go out and you buy a lunch while you're there.
Well, this company caters.
They bring in people who actually serve food that you can buy right there.
And they're organic lunches, which means it's extremely healthy.
Right. This is what makes it healthy.
If food is catered, it's not necessarily healthy.
But organic food is pretty healthy for you.
Organic means it is grown without using any kind of chemical that all of the...
all of the minerals and stuff put into the soil,
all the water, all the treatments are... or are healthy.
They're all made from something in nature.
So it's actually pretty good for you.
Right. They don't use any chemicals.
And Kaylah, they also do group-fitness outings.
That's right.
Now and a group outing is when somebody... a group of people get together and go
somewhere.
Now a fitness outing would mean probably they're going on runs or hikes, or
they're going biking.
It gets them out of the office with people from their office, so building
community while encouraging healthy lifestyle.
OK.
So we've seen how this company in just five months since Greenwood has worked
there has really improved office life through using these things.
That's right.
It can improve and help people enjoy working in the office and be healthier.
He said employees are definitely engaged at his office.
All right.
Now in this use of the word "engaged," it means you are participating, and
you're very interested in what is happening.
Which is great; you want your employees interested and engaged because that
means they're doing their work well and they're enjoying it.
Well, maybe enjoying your work and being engaged can improve your office if you
choose these things to bring a healthy variety to your work environment.
All right. So try these things out.
But for now, friends, let's watch the skit.
James, James.
Where are you?
Excuse me, desk.
Have you seen James?
Hey! What are you doing?
I'm looking for you, James.
Why aren't you at your desk?
Oh. Well, I don't spend much time at my desk anymore.
But you used to always be at your desk.
Yeah. I used to spend 35 hours a week sitting here, but not know.
Why the change?
I'm participating in a study.
You joined a study?
Yes. I jumped at the opportunity.
And now I'm staying active.
I'm biking and walking.
Well, good for you.
Yeah! Any time I get a chance to break up my day, I take it.
So you don't sit much anymore.
No.
And when I do sit, I use an exercise ball.
Has your health improved?
Oh, yes.
Now I'm considered healthy, and I plan to get even healthier.
Great.
I'm replacing this desk with an adjustable work-fit station.
You're replacing your desk?
Yes.
Oops! Time for my group-fitness outing.
Gotta go.
See you.
Bye, James.
Bye, desk. I'm so sorry.
(Chinese).
And time really flies.
See you next time.
Bye-bye.
Here's a question for you, friends.
How much time do you spend sitting every day?
Studies suggest that by replacing sitting at your desk with standing two hours a
day either at home, at work, or at school,
you can reduce your risk of getting a disease.
You can reduce your health care costs.
You could be more efficient and productive.
And you know, you can stand when you're not working too.
Have you ever stood while watching a movie?
Hey, why not?
OK, everyone, have a great weekend.
Make some healthy choices, and then join us on Monday for another lesson.
Until then, take care.
