Hi, everybody.
Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
Thanks for taking time out of your day to study with us.
My name is Steve.
You might think that Christmas comes just once a year.
Wrong!
According to this month's TRAVEL article, Christmas Day happens 365 days a year
- but only if you're in a town called Santa Claus.
Tucked away in the rolling hills of southern Indiana, Santa Claus is a small
town with big appeal, big enough to attract thousands of visitors every year.
OK.
Let's learn why people get excited about going to this small, rural community by
opening our magazines to page 32 and reading Santa Claus, Indiana - America's
Christmas Town.
Santa Claus, Indiana - America's Christmas Town.
Welcome to the town where every day is Christmas Day.
"It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!" People don't usually hear this
popular holiday song until the Christmas season arrives.
But in Santa Claus, Indiana, Christmas lights twinkle, and Christmas music plays
all year.
Holiday excitement can be felt all throughout the town, from Santa's Candy
Castle to Lake Rudolph.
The town is famous for having the world's only post office with the name "Santa
Claus." The area is also home to the world's first theme park, Santa Claus Land.
(Music).
Hi, friends.
Thank you for joining us.
My name is Ryan.
And I'm here with Kaylah.
Hello, friends.
Today we're in my favorite article of the month, which, of course, is our TRAVEL
article.
Today we're going to go visit a very special place - we're going to see Santa
Claus.
Santa Claus! We're going to the North Pole!
Oh, no, Ryan.
We're not going to the North Pole.
We're going to Indiana.
Santa Claus lives in Indiana?
No. Ryan, the place is called Santa Claus.
It's not the man, it's the town.
It's a small town in Indiana, which is kind of in the middle of the United
States.
OK, so we're talking about a town that is named Santa Claus.
This is America's Christmas town.
Yes, that's right.
Welcome to the town where every day is Christmas Day?
Well, wow! Every day for them is Christmas Day.
If you thought you loved having Christmas once a year, wait till you see what
it's like to have Christmas every day of the year.
Oh! Can you imagine getting presents every day of the year?
I think that'd be my favorite part.
But there's a lot more than just presents going on in this town.
Let's take a look at what's happening in Santa Claus.
That's right.
Our opening sentence is: "It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas," which,
Ryan, didn't you sing this a couple days ago?
That's right.
This is a popular Christmas carol, which are types of songs that are sung during
Christmastime.
That's right.
You may have heard it before.
Ryan, you want to sing it again?
Sure.
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas.
Very nice.
Oh, thank you.
OK. Today we're talking about this town of Santa Claus where always looks like
Christmas.
That's right.
People don't usually hear that song, that popular holiday song, until the
Christmas season arrives.
Which would be now, so we do hear it these days.
But throughout the year, you don't usually hear Christmas music.
It seems a little strange to hear it.
Yes. But in Santa Claus, Indiana, Christmas lights twinkle, and Christmas music
plays all year.
Wow! Wow, I wonder if they get sick of Christmas music.
Yeah. I think I might get a little tired of Christmas every day.
But hey, it would be beautiful with all those twinkling Christmas lights.
We do love twinkling lights at Christmas.
To "twinkle" means to shine repeatedly very strong and then weak, and strong and
then weak.
So you can imagine stars at night in the sky, you see them they kind of...
there's a... like a bit of a flicker.
It's like you can see them really well then not.
And that's called twinkling lights.
Yes, exactly.
Sometimes we might use a similar word, which is blink.
Your eyes blink; they open and close.
Well, lights can twinkle.
That means they're doing the same thing, turning on and off.
Friends, you might recognize "twinkle" from a very popular song, Twinkle,
Twinkle, Little Star.
Now you know what twinkle is.
Exactly.
So here this is a town where you can listen to Christmas music, see Christmas
lights twinkling no matter what time of year it is.
Now holiday excitement can be felt all throughout the town.
So "all throughout something" means all over.
Everyone is included in this Christmas spirit.
OK. You can always feel the atmosphere of Christmas.
That is the spirit of Christmas.
And throughout this town, you can see Santa's Candy Castle all the way over to
Lake Rudolph.
All those are very Santa... very Christmasly-named things - Lake Rudolph.
We know Rudolph is a very famous little man, isn't he?
Well, Rudolph is the name of a reindeer in Christmas stories who has a red nose.
Maybe you've heard of him before.
That's right.
We'll talk a little bit more about him tomorrow.
But let's get a look at what this town looks like.
OK.
The town is famous for having the world's only post office with the name Santa
Claus.
OK. So if you look at page 32 in your Studio Classroom magazine, you will see a
picture of the Santa Claus post office.
Ryan, did you write letters to Santa as a kid?
You know what, I never wrote letters to Santa, but it is popular for children to
write letters to Santa Claus asking for a gift.
Now why would they do that?
Well, they hope that the letters will end up with the real Santa Claus in the
North Pole.
That's right.
So it's kind of a tradition for kids to write a wish list of things that they
want for Christmas and send it to Santa Claus.
Really their parents just look at the list to know what they want.
But it's fun for kids to write a letter to Santa.
It's a secret! Don't tell the kids that.
Well, if you send the letter to Santa Claus, it just might end up in Indiana.
That's right.
Now this area, Kaylah, is also home to the world's first theme park, Santa Claus
Land.
Wait a second. First?
That's right.
This is called the world's first theme park.
Now what is a theme park?
Ooh, a "theme park" is a very large, permanent area for public entertainment
with rides, games, food, show all in one place.
So maybe the most famous theme park I can think of is, of course, Disneyland.
Disneyland. Right, Disneyland is a theme park.
Now we see two words here is we know park is usually a place like that, but what
about the word theme?
Well, the theme means it has a common area... it's the common point of what it
is.
It's a subject that it kind of all follows.
So of course Disneyland's theme is, well, Disney - Disney characters, Disney
movies, Disney shows.
So that's the theme throughout it.
Well, what would this theme be?
Well, a theme of Santa Claus Land is, you guessed it, Santa Claus!
Everything has to do with Christmas.
That's right.
It has something to do with the holiday season.
But this theme park is not just open for Christmas time, right?
Exactly.
It's obviously in Santa Claus, Indiana, it's Christmas throughout the entire
year.
So you can go to Santa Claus Land even in the middle of the summer.
Now it's kind of funny to think this is the first theme park ever opened because
theme parks are so popular today.
But we'll talk about where it got started, when it got started and what it's
like to visit this park after we watch this video.
