Welcome back, everybody.
I hope you had a great break.
Now because of its name, Santa Claus, the town receives thousands of letters
from all of the world addressed to Santa Claus the person.
Every year a group of volunteers in the town, known as Santa's elves, make sure
that each letter is answered by Santa himself.
And that's a tradition that is now close to 100 years old.
OK. Let's talk about the fun that can be had in a place called Santa Claus Land
on line four.
Santa Claus, Indiana - America's Christmas Town.
The park first opened in 1946.
Then in 1984, sections representing other holidays were added, and the park
became "Holiday World." In 1993 Splashin' Safari, a 30-acre water park, was
added.
Today, TripAdvisor.com calls it "the nation's number 1 Water Park." The
admission price includes both theme parks,
free parking, free soft drinks and free all-you-need sunscreen.
That helps make it a very affordable and fun family vacation!
No wonder "The World's Friendliest and Cleanest" theme park has had over a
million first-time visitors.
(Music).
Friends, if you really like Christmas, then you can travel to Indiana where
you'll find Santa Claus - not the real Santa Claus,
a city named Santa Claus where you will find Christmas every day of the year.
Now friends, maybe you want to experience a Western Christmas tradition but
can't get there for December.
Well, visiting Santa Claus, Indiana, solves your problem.
You can visit so many Christmas-themed things.
The last of which we were talking about is a theme park.
We said it was the first theme park opened.
That's right.
It's, of course, a place.
It's called Santa Claus Land.
And it's a place where you can experience games, rides, shows and more all with
the theme of Santa Claus and Christmas.
Now this park first opened in 1946, making it the first theme park in the world.
But then in 1984, sections representing other holidays were added.
OK. So it opened in 1946, Kaylah.
That is actually right before Disneyland opened.
And then in 1984, a few years later, they added new sections.
And sections are parts.
And what... what is the word "represent" here?
"Sections," it means different areas of the park.
Right, right.
And then they "represent" other holidays, right?
That's right.
And to represent means they are kind of an example of.
And those small sections, each of them, their theme is of a different holiday.
OK. So maybe you like Christmas, you could go to Santa Claus Land.
But maybe you also like Thanksgiving, you might be able to find a Thanksgiving
section at Santa Claus Land.
But you probably won't be able to find it under the title Santa Claus Land
anymore because once those were added, the park became Holiday World.
Right. So now people realize that other people like other holidays.
So this is now Holiday World, not just a land anymore, it's a world.
Well, in 1993 Splashin' Safari, a 30-acre water park, was added.
OK. Now this is called Splashin' Safari.
The first word, "splashin" is kind of a shortened version of the word splashing.
And if something is splashing, that means that water or liquid is being thrown
up into the air.
That's right.
It means it's going up and coming back down.
To... when we say "splashing" here, it's representing how much fun you're going
to have.
And a safari is, we learned about this just last month, about it's a journey,
it's going through maybe a more adventure area.
So this is kind of a water adventure, having-fun park.
Exactly. So this is a fun name for a water park.
And so they call it a water park, which simply means it's a place you go where
you can get wet, ride water slides, play in pools and enjoy usually summer heat.
Ooh, how fun! And you've got 30 acres to do this on.
Well, it's very popular.
Today, in fact, TripAdvisor.com calls it the nation's number 1 water park.
OK. Now this is actually very true.
We know this is probably true because it comes from TripAdvisor.com, which is a
popular website.
Now "advisor," let's break these words up.
An "advisor" is someone whose job is to, well, give advice, or good information
or to give you feedback on a specific subject.
So "TripAdvisor" then gives you good feedback and information about trips or
vacations.
Exactly.
They can tell you what they think is good or bad so that you can decide what you
want to do based on that information.
And they say this is the number 1 water park!
Now it says the nation's number 1 water park.
This is definitely in the United States.
Now a... to say it's the number 1, that mean it's that best.
It's the highest quality and the one they most recommend.
Exactly. Now the admission price here includes both theme parks, free parking,
free soft drinks and free all-you-need sunscreen.
OK, sign me up!
I want to go.
OK. Well, here's the reason why Kaylah is so excited is because of the price of
the admission and what you get for the admission.
Now usually admission is a... only... is the one fee involved.
"Admission" is what you... how much you pay.
Admission is being allowed to go into a place, you're admitted into something.
Now the admission fee is how much you pay then to go into the park.
Exactly, so.
If you want to enter into a theme park, such as Holiday World, you need to pay a
certain amount of money.
And that is your admission fee.
Once you pay the money, you are then given admission into the park.
Now usually admission covers just going into the park.
You have to pay for everything else once you're there.
This, though, is a great deal.
You get both parks, free parking for your vehicle, free soft drinks, which will
be great, you have free drinks all day, and all-you-can-use sunscreen.
I like this.
"Sunscreen" is a liquid that you put on your body to protect your skin from the
sun.
We all should use sunscreen all summer long and whenever you're outdoors.
So especially at the water park where you're wearing a bathing suit, you can
make your skin is covered in sunscreen so you do not get burned.
OK, so the price here is great.
And that helps make it a very affordable and fun family vacation.
That's right.
"Affordable" means families can pay the money to go, and it's... it'd be a fun
vacation.
Now they also call this "The World's Friendliest and Cleanest" theme park.
And it has had over a million first-time visitors.
That's incredible.
But that also means a lot of people like going back to visit it for sure.
It is definitely clean, it's fun, and hey, it's a great place to get out with
the family.
Exactly.
Friends, there is plenty more to learn about Santa Claus, Indiana.
But for now, let's go visit the Chat Room.
Hey, Ken.
You don't look so well.
Are you OK?
Not really.
I'm actually feeling a little sick.
Oh. Did you catch a cold?
No. I ate lunch at an eat-till-you're-full sushi buffet.
And man, do I regret it!
Oh. So you really did try to eat till you were full, huh?
Yep, I'm sure tried.
I kept telling myself that if I ate just a little more, I would really get my
money's worth.
I'm familiar with that challenge.
I used to enjoy eating all-you-can-eat buffets when I was single.
Wait a minute. I was sure those were called eat-till-you're-full buffets.
I'm afraid not.
But let's have Doris explain those restaurants to us.
OK.
At an all-you-can-eat buffet, you can eat as much of the food on the buffet as
you want, and you only pay one fixed price.
Well, these buffets may seem like a good way to try a variety of foods.
You want to be careful not to overeat and hurt your stomach.
Oh. It's "all you can eat." I guess you were right and I was wrong.
Don't worry about it, Ken.
I should also add that now many restaurants use the term "all you care to eat"
instead.
Really? Why did they change the name?
Well, when all-you-can-eat buffets first opened, some people challenged
themselves to eat as much as they could.
And some people got really sick.
Yeah, like what's happening to me right now.
I guess changing the name was a smart move.
Yep. Saying "all you care to eat" reminds people to watch how much they're
eating and stop when they feel full.
Well, I feel like sitting down and enjoying an all-I-care-to-read buffet.
By all means, Ken.
Go ahead.
(Chinese).
(Music).
Hi, everyone. I'm Michelle.
(Chinese).
And that's it for today.
I'll see you tomorrow. Bye-bye.
So just how did Santa Claus get its name?
Well, way back in the 1850s, so the story goes, the residents were trying to
think of a new name for their town.
Many meetings were held and many names were proposed, but no one could agree.
Then one Christmas Eve, during yet another town meeting, the sound of bells was
heard, causing a little boy to shout: It's Santa Claus.
Immediately, a town elder shouted: Hey, that's a great name for our town.
And the residents agreed.
And that's how the town of Santa Claus was born.
The end.
Friends, until we meet again tomorrow, I hope all of you have a fantastic day.
Bye-bye.
