Hi, everybody.
Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
I'm so happy you've joined us today.
My name is Steve.
This month's TRAVEL feature takes us to a special small town in mid-America
called Santa Claus.
Now with a name like that, you would expect it to know all about how to
celebrate Christmas in style.
And indeed it does.
And not just in December, but three 365 days a year.
Santa Claus, Indiana, is so much fun, in fact, that for the second year in a
row, it ranked among the Top 10 most fun small towns in America.
Let's find out more about what makes Santa Claus so fun as we jump into today's
reading on page 33.
Santa Claus, Indiana - America's Christmas Town.
Back in town, kids of all ages enjoy Lake Rudolph's light show from Thanksgiving
through New Year's.
The more than 300 light displays portray the story of Rudolph the Red-Nosed
Reindeer.
Though every day is Christmas Day in Santa Claus, December is the most exciting
month!
The first three weekends are packed with holiday fun.
Family-friendly games include tree decorating, a 5-kilometer holiday race and
more.
The second weekend features a delightful Christmas parade.
Hello, friends. Thank you so much for joining us.
My name is Kaylah.
My name is Ryan.
Friends, we are talking about Santa Claus.
Well, Santa Claus, Indiana, Ryan.
That's right.
We're talking about the city in Indiana that is named Santa Claus.
And there it is Christmas every day of the year.
That's right.
Now we've talked about some things you can do.
We said the whole... the whole town is themed for Christmas.
There's a special theme park called Holiday World that has all kinds of holiday
areas as well as a water park.
But we're done talking about our theme park.
It's clean, it's friendly, but let's head back into town.
That's right.
"Back in town" is a phrase that means we're going back to the center of the
city.
There, kids of all ages enjoy Lake Rudolph's light show from Thanksgiving
through New Year's.
OK. "Kids of all ages." Does this just mean anyone from ages like two to 12?
Well... almost, Kaylah.
Actually, the phrase "kids of all ages" means everyone.
It's saying that really inside, we are all kids no matter how old we are.
That's true.
You are, for sure.
Hey!
I'm just kidding.
Now all of us have a bit of a child still in us.
We get excited for the holidays.
We look forward to vacations.
We like to... we still enjoy playing.
Maybe our play is different, but we can all enjoy these holiday themes.
And everyone would enjoy the holiday-themed light show at Lake Rudolph.
Kaylah, what is a light show?
Ooh, this is fun.
A light show is a display of different lights, different colors and different
designs put on to tell a story or to just be really beautiful.
Exactly. And especially when these lights are shining over a lake like Lake
Rudolph, it's going to create a lot of beautiful designs and colors.
Now it goes from Thanksgiving through New Year's.
So that is from the end of November to the very end of December.
OK. So here there are more than 300 light displays.
And they portray the story of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.
We talked a little about Rudolph yesterday.
We mentioned him.
You might recognize his story.
But if you don't, you should go to this light show because it portrays this
story.
That's right.
And if you "portray" something, that means that you are representing or
describing something in a painting or a film or a book, or in this case, a light
show.
That's right.
It's through artistic something.
And I would definitely say a light show is artistic.
Now if you... it says there are 300 light displays.
These displays would be set up in special designs to tell you a section of this
story.
And this is the story of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.
And a "reindeer" is a type of animal.
You might actually see the word "deer" in there.
It's really a kind of deer, which is an animal with horns on its head.
And it lives in northern Europe, Asia and America.
And they're usually very nice creatures.
That's right.
They live... well, they can be kind of fears.
Sometimes.
They live farther up north.
They've got very thick fur.
The most famous reindeer, of course, is Rudolph.
And we say he's red nose because in his story, he's born with a nose that is not
black like normal reindeer.
Instead, it's shiny red and blinks.
And he gets made fun of.
But of course, we know he saves the day.
That's right.
Friends, if you don't know the story of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, then you
can look it up online for more information or ask your parents.
That's right.
And if you want to know what a reindeer looks like, picture the animals pulling
Santa's sleigh because that is who the reindeer are.
That's what... that's who Santa uses.
Exactly, so.
This is a wonderful place where you can watch the story of Rudolph the Red-Nosed
Reindeer in lights.
Now though every day is Christmas Day in Santa Claus, December is the most
exciting.
So even though we celebrate it all year, the month of December is the most
exciting.
Makes sense.
That's when Christmas is.
The first three weekends are packed with holiday fun.
Now to be "packed" with something, in this case, we're talking about time.
That means it is completely full.
It means there's something going on at all times.
Exactly.
Family-friendly games include tree decorating, a 5-kilometer holiday race and
more.
That's right.
So this is definitely within the first three weeks.
Decorating your tree can be a competition.
Well, the second weekend features a delightful Christmas parade.
Friends, we've talked about parades before.
That is when people get together in a line and show off and walk usually down a
street.
And this one is delightful.
That means it's beautiful, it's fun, it's friendly, it's something we can all
enjoy.
So maybe you would enjoy this Christmas parade the second weekend in December.
OK. Friends, Christmas is not just about parades and games, it's also about
food.
So join us after we watch this skit.
Jingle bells, jingle bells.
Christmas is just around the corner.
Yep. It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas.
Hey! I know a place where Christmas lights twinkle and Christmas music plays all
year.
Where's that?
In Santa Claus, Indiana.
Is there really such a place?
Yes. It's the only post office in the world with the name Santa Claus.
How did they get that name?
Well, first the name was Santa Fe.
But when they wanted to get a post office, there was already a Santa Fe.
So they decided to name the town Santa Claus.
Well, ho, ho, ho.
What do you know?
The town is also home to the world's first-ever theme park.
Oh. What was it called?
It was called Santa Claus Land. Yeah.
Wow! That sounds fun.
It is.
Weekends in December are packed with holiday fun: light shows, parades, candy
canes and much, much, much, much more.
Woo-ooh! What a great way to celebrate Christmas!
Yeah. And now the park has other sections representing other holidays too.
So it isn't just for Christmas anymore?
That's right.
Now it's called Holiday World.
Hooray!
Kids, and elves, of all ages will enjoy Holiday World.
Ho, ho, ho, especially me!
No, especially me!
Especially me...
