Welcome back, everybody.
December might be the most festive month to visit Santa Claus,
but it's not the best time to put on your bathing suit and take a ride on the
world's longest water coaster at Splashin' Safari.
So the best time to go to Santa Claus, Indiana, really depends on whether you
like cold weather or hot weather.
OK. Time to wrap up the lesson with a little something for people with a sweet
tooth on line 12.
Santa Claus, Indiana - America's Christmas Town.
For those with a sweet tooth, a trip to Santa's Candy Castle is a requirement.
The castle-shaped building was first built in the mid-1930s.
Today it houses many treats and the world's largest selection of candy canes.
America's Hometown Christmas Tree is a must-see with decorations from all 50
states.
And what's the holiday season without gifts?
At the enormous Santa Claus Christmas Store, there are Christmas-themed gifts
for everyone.
Make plans to visit Santa Claus, Indiana, where you can celebrate Christmas 365
days a year!
(Music).
Do you love Christmas?
Well, maybe you should take a trip to Santa Claus, Indiana.
We've talked a lot about things you can do there where it's Christmas every day.
But in December, it's especially a fun trip.
That's right.
You can go there and see every weekend is packed with tons of activities.
There is so much for you to do, but there's also a lot of good food around
Christmastime.
Yes. Right right before the break, Ryan, you said that Christmas is not just
about parades and excitement.
But at this time of year, we have special food as well.
Now for those of you with a sweet tooth... Ryan, that's definitely you.
I do have a very big sweet tooth.
Now that doesn't mean my teeth are really nasty and long.
That actually means that... a "sweet tooth" means that you enjoy eating sweet
foods.
Especially candies and cakes.
And Ryan, that's something you're definitely guilty of!
Ryan loves eating sweets.
I prefer salty foods, so I do not have a sweet tooth.
But someone who loves sweet food like Ryan definitely does.
Yes. And friends, you, just like me, should be careful if you have a sweet tooth
because eventually it'll catch up to you.
Well, be careful this time of year.
There's lots of sweets.
Well, if you're in Santa Claus, your sweet tooth will pay off.
That's right.
A trip to Santa's Candy Castle, which we talked about yesterday, is a
requirement.
Now a castle is a very large home usually associated with a royal or king's
family.
But here it means a very large and beautiful place.
Now Kaylah, what is a requirement?
Oh. A requirement means you have to, something you must do.
So if you are going to, uh, maybe you want to be... you want to take a certain
ride, a theme park ride,
a requirement would be how tall you have to be or how old you have to be.
And if you do not reach that, then you are not allowed to.
Now here we're using this word to describe something that we're suggesting to
you, but we mean it very strongly.
It's like saying don't miss it.
That's right.
You definitely want to go.
Well, this caslte-shaped building was first built in the mid-1930s.
It's quite old.
In fact, this dates back even before Holiday World, or as it was once called
Santa Claus Land.
That's right.
We said that building is a castle shape.
That's why it's called Santa's Candy Castle.
Now a castle shape... we talked about castles earlier this year and about all
the different kinds of castles.
So you can use your imagination and picture one of those big beautiful
buildings.
And this... this candy place is designed like one of those.
OK. So it looks like a castle, or usually a home for someone who is royalty, a
king or queen perhaps.
But today it houses many treats and the world's largest selection of candy
canes.
Now we say it houses them.
That does not mean it's a bunch of different houses.
When we use this, we mean it is where they are, or houses where you stay.
So when you say something is housed there, that is where it is or where it is
staying.
Right. That's where you can find it.
And they have the largest selection, which means a group of something, and that
selection is of candy canes.
That's right.
Now "candy canes" are candy you would recognize.
They are shaped like a cane, or a walking stick.
They're made entirely of candy, and most commonly have a red and white stripe on
them.
Yeah, little red and white stripes going down the middle of the candy, and
they're very sweet.
That's right.
And you usually hang them on things.
Well, America's Hometown Christmas Tree is a must-see with decorations from all
50 states.
OK. So this Christmas tree is one of the biggest trees around.
And it has decorations on it.
"Decorations" are referring to little things that you put usually around your
house, or in this case, on a tree that look pretty.
Now a declaration is something you use to make another thing look more
attractive.
So definitely putting different little ornaments on the tree will make it
beautiful.
And there's one from all states.
From every of the 50 states in America.
And this is a must-see!
It's another requirement.
And what's the holiday season without gifts?
We'll find out after we visit Liz with Grammar on the Go.
Hi there, friends.
How are you doing today?
My name is Liz.
And it's time for Grammar on the Go.
We're talking about Santa Claus, Indiana - America's Christmas Town in today's
article.
And the writer asks: And what's the holiday season without gifts?
That's our Grammar Tip sentence.
It just means you can't go through the holiday season with no gifts.
In other words, gifts are an important part of the holiday season.
Our Grammar Tip focus today is on the sentence pattern:
What is a [situation]... without [something]?
Use this sentence pattern when you want to talk about how something is a very
important part of a situation.
For example, the turkey is an important part of the American Thanksgiving
dinner.
So we can say:
What's a Thanksgiving dinner without a turkey?
Or, many people like to eat popcorn when they watch a movie.
So some people might say:
What is a movie without popcorn?
So give this sentence pattern a try.
Think of something that is an important part of a situation and try practicing
using the sentence pattern.
If you'd like to see some more example sentences, they're available in today's
Grammar Tip section in your magazine.
That's it for today.
This is Liz with Grammar on the Go siging off.
Bye-bye.
Thank you, Liz.
Well friends, at the enornous, or huge, Santa Claus Christmas Store, there are
Christmas-themed gifts for everyone.
That's right.
You can get a gift all year long that has a Christmas feel to it.
Now you should make plans to visit Santa Claus, Indiana, where you can celebrate
Christmas 365 days a year.
OK. "Celebrate" means to enjoy and have a party for something.
And usually we only celebrate Christmas once a year; now you can celebrate it
365 days a year.
In other words, all year long.
Take time to visit Santa Claus, Indiana, to experience Christmas.
Now let's go experience the Chat Room.
(Music).
Hey, Bryan.
Hi, Ken.
Hey, Ken, what are you doing next Wednesday afternoon?
Um, nothing that I know of. Why?
Well, my colleagues and I are taking a day trip to the New York Public Library,
and I thought you might like to come along.
A day trip to the New York Public Library?
That sounds interesting.
Yes. It will be a great trip and an opportunity to see a world-class library.
Man, that library is huge, and it houses several rare books.
I'm definitely interested, especially in seeing the rare books.
But I think you pronounced "houses" wrong.
No, Ken.
When you use the verb form, you use a "Z" sound instead of an "S" sound.
The Library "houses" rare books.
Oh. I didn't know that.
So if the library houses books, that means it stores them, right?
That's right.
To house something means to store it.
Many people house tools and equipment in their garages.
Yes. And some people simply house junk in their garages, like me.
Come on, Ken.
Your garage is much more clean and organized than mine is.
Thanks.
I also remember hearing about people housing guests.
But that doesn't mean storing guests, does it?
No. In that case, "house" means to offer lodging to people.
Say, have you ever housed guests before, Ken?
Sure, but only family members, and then only for a few days at a time.
How about you?
Well, I'm like you.
I don't enjoy having guests stay for long periods of time.
So I can never run a bed-and-breakfast out of my house.
Me neither.
Well, let me check my calendar and see if I'm free next Wednesday.
OK. Hope you can join us.
(Chinese).
(Chinese).
And time really flies.
Don't forget to come back next time.
Bye-bye.
