Welcome back, everybody.
Why do workers prefer using their own mobile devices over devices issued by
their company?
Because personal laptops and mobile devices generally have more cutting-edge
software,
and hardware upgrades can be done quickly without having to wait for an office
IT manager to give the go-ahead.
OK. Let's look at a few cons to BYOD down on line 12.
(Music).
BYOD.
Unfortunately, BYOD also has some very significant drawbacks.
In some cases, employees feel put out and having to pay for devices that were
once supplied by employers.
BYOD also means that company files are stored on personal devices,
leaving many companies scrambling to create policies to safeguard their
information.
Regardless of the position companies take on BYOD, it is becoming difficult to
control.
The trend toward mobile technology is making people increasingly dependent on
devices like smartphones.
As such, workers are becoming inclined to use their personal devices for work -
with or without the company's approval.
(Music).
Hi, friends.
Do you BYOD, bring your own device to work?
Well, if you do, you could be saving your company a lot of money and being able
to work more efficiently because you're using your own device.
That's right.
So these are benefits: You can work very well, and you save the company money.
But we have our first word here, it says "unfortunately." That means something
bad is going to happen.
Exactly.
And bringing your own device, it might be good in some ways, but it also has
some very significant drawbacks.
Now to be significant means big and important.
And you don't want significant drawbacks in anything.
That's right.
A "drawback" is a disadvantage.
It's a bad thing instead of something good.
That's right.
It's the negative part of a situation.
So we've looked at the good things, now we're going to look at the bad things,
the drawbacks.
Exactly.
In some cases, employees feel put out at having to pay for devices that the
company once supplied for them.
Now I can understand this.
To be put out means they don't agree with or they have a bad feeling about it.
Exactly.
And so they're put out, they feel bad about needing to pay for this, especially
since the company used to pay for it.
My company is not making me bring my own devices.
I chose to do it.
But you remember I told you, things like a computer and a camera, those are not
cheap.
They're very expensive.
So maybe if your company is making you, is requiring you to bring your own
device, you feel put out because usually, in the past, Ryan,
I've never heard of someone requiring you to provide your own computer for work.
And that's... that's an expensive purchase.
And I... I think if I was required to, I would be upset that I have to spend the
money to work.
OK. So that is a major drawback that people need to consider.
Now I know for me, I chose to bring my own device.
And that means that I can keep the device for myself, so I was a little bit more
OK with it.
But I did face some other problems like this next one coming up.
That's right.
BYOD also means that company files are going to be stored on your personal
device,
which can leave many companies scrambling to create policies to safeguard their
information.
OK. Now we're talking about files, company files.
A file is a bit of information, such as a document or even pictures or videos,
that the company owns.
So if you're using your own personal device, that means it belongs to you, then
you have their files on your device.
That's right.
Now to store something means it is saved and protected on it.
So you have their information.
This can leave companies scrambling to create a policy that safeguards to
protect their personal information.
If you're "scrambling," that means you are running around and trying to do
things as fast as you can.
And they want to protect their information.
That's right.
Scrambling can also mean it's competing with other people for something, for
something that is very little of.
So there's really not good information or good policies or rules to help protect
company's private information, so they're trying to do this quickly.
Exactly. That can be a problem.
Well, friends, regardless of the position that companies take on BYOD, it's
still becoming difficult to control.
So "regardless" means no matter what they're choosing, it's hard to be in
control of it,
because the trend toward mobile technology is making people increasingly
dependent on their devices like their smartphones.
Exactly.
So this is, of course, a new trend.
And it's mobile technology such as tablets and smartphones.
And people are increasingly, or even more becoming, dependent.
They need those devices, and like Kaylah said, such as smartphones.
That's right.
Now you can answer emails, and that puts personal... puts the company
information on your personal device.
Now as such, or because of this, workers are becoming inclined to use their
personal devices for work with or without company's approval.
At first, friends, I was inclined to use my device without the company's
approval.
If you're inclined to do something, that means you tend to want to do something.
So to be "inclined" means it's what you're going to do.
Now we have this phrase "with or without company approval." Now approval means
permission.
So if you're inclined to do it, make sure you check with the company so you get
their permission.
And no, don't break the rules.
Exactly, friends.
Now you should think about that before you bring your own device.
Now we hope you've learned a lot about this.
But now let's watch the skit.
Welcome to our company.
Here is your desk.
Great!
But where's my computer... and my phone?
Sorry. The company doesn't provide those devices anymore.
Employees are required to bring their own.
You're not giving me a computer?
That's right.
BYOD - bring your own devices.
Why do employees have to bring their own?
Oh, simple!
Employees assume the cost, and the company saves a fortune.
Yes. I see the potential for savings.
It also leads to greater efficiency.
How's that?
You're familiar with your devices.
You already know how to use them.
I see.
That is more efficient.
Yes. BYOD is an excellent plan.
It's an excellent plan with significant drawbacks.
Significant drawbacks?
Yes!
I have to pay for my own devices.
I feel put out.
You'll get over it.
All right.
I'll bring my own devices to work tomorrow.
Good for you.
And I'll store all your company files on my personal computer.
Hmm. Our files, your computer.
Yes. Do you have policies that safeguard your information?
Well, um... no.
Well, then you'd better scramble to create some.
Oh, dear.
Uh, excuse me.
I... have some scrambling to do.
Hi, everyone. I'm Michelle.
(Chinese).
And I guess that's it for today.
I'll see you next time.
Bye-bye.
Thank you, Michelle.
BYOD, or bring your own device, describes the trend of employees using their own
personal mobile devices for work purposes.
For employees, the pro of BYOD is that it makes work more efficient.
The con is that they have to pay for the devices themselves.
Now the pro for employers is that BYOD saves the company a lot of money.
But the con - and it's a big con - is that it creates huge security problems.
Friends, this high-level lesson has some great vocabulary.
So take some time to review it and use it.
Then we'll see you alltomorrow. Take care.
