Thanks for joining us here today at Studio Classroom Worldwide.
My name is Steve.
Maybe there are certain problems in your life you just don't know how to handle.
You've tried everything but nothing seems to work.
Now before you throw up your hands and surrender, there might be one solution
you haven't thought of yet - using a little salt.
I know it sounds crazy, but our TIPS feature this month is telling us that salt,
those simple, white crystals found in almost every kitchen in the world, can be
used in some pretty interesting ways.
Let's learn a few more surprising uses for salt at the bottom of page 18.
Surprising Uses for Salt.
Food problems.
Before you throw away that wrinkled-looking apple, try some salt.
Put the apple in water with a little salt, and watch the wrinkles disappear!
Milk and salad both stay fresher longer when you sprinkle in just a bit of salt.
Smells.
Sprinkle a little salt in your shoes to take care of bad smells.
You can also use salt to remove the smell of onions from your hands.
Just rub your fingers with salt and a little vinegar.
(Music).
Hi, everyone.
Thank you for joining us.
My name is Ryan.
And my name is Kaylah.
And we are looking at TIPS - how to use salt in interesting ways.
OK. Now we've already seen that you can stop a grease fire using salt.
Just pour it on top of the fire.
And you can prevent and get rid of a lot of bug problems.
That's right.
You can also clean with salt.
Who knew?
It's great for cleaning.
You can eat and then clean with it.
OK. Well, you can also help a lot of food problems we find out next.
These, friends, might actually surprise you.
Now I think that a food problem for salt would be: My food doesn't taste good. I
will put salt on it.
But there's even more things that salt can do for you.
That's right.
It can help you keep your food good for longer.
And we'll see what that means here.
Before you throw away that wrinkled-looking old apple, try putting some salt on
it.
We need to know what a wrinkle is to know what wrinkled-looking is.
A "wrinkle" is a small crease in the surface of skin.
So as you get older, you get those creases, those lines in your face around your
eyes and your mouth, those are called wrinkles.
So an apple that is getting old, if you imagine it gets all squishy and kind of
strange-looking, and the surface gets those little lines in it, those are
wrinkles.
Exactly.
Kaylah, with people, sometimes wrinkles right here make them look like they're
happier if they're next to their eye.
You know, they look like a happy person, they always smile.
But wrinkles in an apple just show that it's getting old and is not good to eat
anymore.
Well, try putting some salt on it before you throw it away.
Then put the apple in water with a little salt and watch the wrinkles disappear?
Yeah. Put the apple in salt water and all of those wrinkles that were on the
surface making it look old will disappear.
Something that disappears was there and now it's not.
Do you think that will work on my face?
Maybe. Who knows?
It's worth trying.
That'd be awesome!
Just to rub salt on your face? I don't think it'll work.
But hey, friends, it'll work for your apples.
I don't think you need it, Kaylah.
Don't worry about that.
But friends, you can try this.
Put your apple in water with salt and see what happens.
Also, milk and salad will both stay fresher longer when you sprinkle in just a
little bit of salt.
OK. Now this one surprises me too.
I never thought to put any salt in my milk, but I always have my milk go bad or
sour before I can finish it.
So maybe I'll put a little bit of salt in there.
And friends, it really won't change the flavor too much if you just sprinkle a
little bit.
I think it's interesting.
Also a salad, if you have a fresh salad, sprinkle a little bit of salt on it and
it'll stay fresher.
Now to sprinkle doesn't mean to take a spoon and dump.
A "sprinkle" is a small amount that you kind of pinch between your fingers and
just let it fall gently.
That is a sprinkle.
It's... it's very light.
Yeah. If you sprinkle something, that means you put just a small amount on top
of something else.
So you might, like Kaylah said, hold the salt between your fingers and just...
put a little bit.
It says "just a bit." That means a little bit of salt in your milk or on your
salad.
OK, so it helps with your food.
Guess what?
It'll also help with smells, strange smells.
You know, if, you know, something smells strange, we don't like it.
It "stinks" is another word for it.
Yeah. Now Kaylah, I could really use help with this one.
We've seen how it can help with food, it can help with bugs.
Now it helps get rid of bad smells.
Now start by "sprinkling," we know what that is, that's small amount.
Sprinkle a little salt in your shoes to make... to take care of them and take
care of those bad smells.
Now this is fantastic.
I don't know about you, but sometimes, friends, my shoes smell terrible, and
I've never really found a good way to get rid of it.
Well, this is an easy and very effective way.
That sounds great.
You should use it, Ryan.
And this is a great sentence, to take care of something.
That's our Grammar on the Go.
So let's visit Liz.
Hi there, friends.
Greetings from the Spanish island of Lanzarote.
My name is Liz.
And it's time for Grammar on the Go.
I'm here at their famous salt refinery.
And speaking of salt, what can you do with salt besides putting it in your food?
Well, that's what our article is about today.
And the writer suggests:
Sprinkle a little salt in your shoes to take care of bad smells.
That's our Grammar Tip sentence.
Now our focus is on the phrase, to take care of.
Normally when we take care of something, it is our responsibility to be careful
with it.
But in the case of today's sentence, "to take care of" has a different meaning.
We're not talking about being careful with bad smells.
Instead, here it means to get rid of.
In other words, the writer is saying putting some salt in your shoes can help to
get rid of bad smells.
This use of "take care of" is most often used in informal situations.
And here are some examples.
Dory took an aspirin and it stopped her headache.
So we can say:
Dory took an aspirin and that took care of her headache.
Or let's say you're going to... let's say you're going to be late for a meeting,
for example.
And because you suddenly have to deal with a few problems, you can say:
I'll be late because I have a few problems I have to take care of right now.
So give this idiom a try, and think of something you need to get rid of and try
using this idiom to describe your situation.
And that's it for today.
This is Liz with Grammar on the Go, signing off, in Lanzarote. Bye-bye.
OK. Here's another one, friends.
You can also use salt to remove the smell of onions off of your hands.
Just rub your fingers with a little bit of salt and a little bit of vinegar.
Now "vinegar" is a liquid that is very sharp or strong smelling and tasting.
And it comes from a soured wine or malt or cider.
And we usually use it to flavor as well.
It's another seasoning.
That's a liquid that mixes well with salt.
All right, friends.
We have two more surprising salt tips coming up right after this.
Pass the salt, please.
Oh. How many times have I heard that?
Many times, I'm sure.
Salt is so common, you know, we take it for granted.
Yes, we do.
Salt was the very first spice.
It makes our food taste better.
That's right.
Pass the salt, please.
But salt has surprising other uses.
Did you know salt can stop ants?
Stop ants?
I had no idea.
And salt can relieve, oh, the pain of an insect bite or a bee sting.
I'll remember that.
Pour salt over a grease fire to put the fire out.
OK, will do.
Use salt to wipe a greasy pan.
It will be so easy to clean.
Great idea.
You can put a wrinkled apple in saltwater and watch those wrinkles disappear.
I can't wait.
Sprinkle salt in milk or salad to keep it fresh longer.
Nice, nice.
Stinky shoes? Eww!
A little salt will take care of that.
Well, who knew?
And salt and vinegar remove onion smells from your hands.
OK.
Rinse with salt water and baking soda for fresh breath.
Wow! Salt has so many surprising uses.
It sure does.
Now will you please pass the salt?
Oh. Of course, here it is.
OK.
Hey, there is no more salt!
Oops! How did that happen?
