Hi, everybody.
Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
Thanks for taking time out of your busy day to study English with us.
My name is Steve.
What's it like having your social network account hacked into?
Well, maybe the word "nightmare" is a good description.
All your private messages are no longer private.
Your friends' contact information and all your personal information is at the
mercy of a stranger who, with just one click of a button, could delete it all.
Now if you ever get hacked, don't spend time feeling sorry for yourself.
You've got to go and act quickly.
Let's kick off today's lesson with our third tip for dealing with a hacked
account: Work on your password, on page 23.
(Music).
Hacked!
Work on your password.
Once you've regained control of your account and cleaned up your computer, it's
time to improve your passwords.
Choosing a robust password means avoiding words that are in the dictionary.
It's also wise to test your new password using an online password strength
checker.
Check your other accounts.
If you use the same user name and password for all your accounts, they may all
be at risk.
Check your other accounts and change your passwords.
Send an apology.
If your account has been bombarding people with messages asking for money, send
an email to your contacts warning them not to send money.
Hi, friends.
Thank you for joining us.
My name is Ryan.
And my name is Kaylah.
Friends, have you been hacked?
Has your computer information been sent to another person?
Is someone trying to access your online accounts?
Well, I hope not.
But this does happen.
So here at Studio Classroom, we're giving you tips to stop them.
That's right.
If this does happen to you, first we've seen, you need to get access to your
account again.
And you can also clean up your computer to make sure that those people can't get
access again from you.
Now friends, even if you've not been hacked, I do recommend that you go in and
update your anti-virus systems now before you do get hacked.
It's a good thing to keep up-to-date.
Yeah, you might think it's annoying because you're always updating them, but
it's for your protection.
So keep doing it.
That's right.
Better to stop them before they can get in because you don't want to have to go
through these steps.
Well, we're going through these steps right now to help you, so let's move on to
our third piece of advice.
OK. Once you've gotten control of your account again and updated your anti-virus
software, then you need to work on your password.
Work on your password.
Does that mean I need to... like make it better, make it fancy, make it look
pretty?
Well, no.
You need to make sure your password is the right combination of letters and
numbers so that it's harder to hack.
OK. So once you've regained control, once you have control of your account, and
you've cleaned up your computer, friends, it's important to do it in this order:
Get the control, clean up the computer, now it's time to improve your password.
That's right.
Remember, if you improve your password or make it better before you update
anti-virus software,
then those malicious programs will just steal your new password.
So friends, if you ever do get hacked, get your Studio Classroom magazine out
and look at it again.
Following the steps is important.
Clean up, then improve or make your password better.
But that's kind of confusing, Ryan.
I like my password the way it is.
What makes it better?
Ah. Well, you need to choose a robust password.
And that means avoiding words that are in the dictionary.
Oh, robust.
First, we need to know what that means before we move into... how to do this to
your password.
"Robust" means it is strong.
If we refer to a robust person, they're strong and healthy, and they're not very
likely to fall or break.
So if your password is robust, it's a good one.
It won't fall or break or be figured out very easily.
That's right.
Something that is robust probably won't fail.
And so in order to choose a good password that won't fail, avoid, or do not use,
words that are in the dictionary.
So don't use a real word.
It's also wise to test your new password using an online password strength
checker.
OK. An online password strength checker is a website that is designed for you to
type in your new password, and then it tells you how strong it is.
Now friends, be careful with this because sometimes you can go to a website that
says they're an online password strength checker,
and it'll just give you more malware and steal your password.
So be careful.
A lot of trusted websites will actually gauge or give you how strong your
password is when you're creating the account.
Follow it.
Make sure you follow that.
That's true.
Friends, it's easy to remember.
Use numbers and letters, lower case and capital, in your password, that'll make
it pretty strong.
And also, just like I do in my password, Kaylah, it can look like a set of
numbers and letters to someone else,
but to you, it needs to mean something so it's easy to remember.
That's right.
Then go in and... you need... you've got your new password, you can... you need
to go back and check your other accounts now.
We've cleaned up the one that's been hacked, we need to check the other ones.
OK, yes. This is our next step.
Now that you have one account get hacked, it's possible that your other accounts
could get hacked.
If you use the same user name and password for all your accounts, then they
might all be at risk.
Oh, I think I'm a little bit guilty of this.
I am... I have a terrible memory so I think, oh, I would just use the same name
and password for my accounts.
But that sets me up to get hacked.
Yes, it does.
In fact, you've got to same user name, like you said; and a user name just means
the little name that you use on a website.
Friends, if you are using a computer or using a website, you are called a user.
OK. So you use, you are a user.
And then your user name is what you call yourself.
OK. Now this is a good idea.
What I do is I have the same password, and then I only change one or two letters
at the end of it for each website.
OK. So then go in, check your other accounts, change those passwords.
Then be polite, send an apology.
That's right.
You need to be apologetic and send an apology say you're sorry if your account
has been bombarding people with messages asking for money.
OK, bombarding.
To "bombard" means to attack a place or a person continuously.
So if you're thinking about a battle, to bombard is they continue to fire, send
bombs.
And if you're bombarded with email, that means it never stops.
Yeah. They're getting many and many of these email messages asking for money.
And of course, make sure they don't try and send you money because it'll never
actually get to you.
It'll go to someone else.
So send an email to your contacts warning them not to send that money.
And to apologize for bombarding their account.
Be polite even though you were the one that was hacked.
We have a few more tips to look at after we visit the Chat Room.
Bryan, look what I found.
Hey, Ken. What is it?
I found an English mistake in this magazine.
Here, take a look.
Oh, wow! That is funny.
The word "America" has become "Amercia." Oh.
You'd think most spell checkers would catch that kind of mistake.
Uh, spell checkers?
Who are they?
No, not who, but what.
A spell checker is a program built in the most word processing programs that
automatically checks for spelling errors, and even some grammar errors.
Oh, I use those.
But I didn't know they were called spell checkers.
So spell checkers have nothing to do with the game "checkers"?
No, not at all.
Are you pretty good at checkers?
No, I'm terrible.
I'm better at chess.
That's funny.
Checkers is a lot easier to play than chess.
Yeah, well, thanks for showing me this mistake.
It goes to prove that we can't rely on the spell checkers to catch all of our
mistakes.
That's for sure.
Hey, are there any other kinds of "checkers" I should be aware of?
Yes. You should know that checker is often used to describe a pattern that
features squares.
Shirts made with this pattern are called checkered shirts, or simply checked
shirts.
Checkered shirts.
Hey, come to think of it, I did have a few of those back in high school.
Me too.
The adjective "checkered" can also refer to something that's gone through a lot
of big changes or shifts.
You might hear people talk about someone with a checkered past or a checkered
career.
So would that be a good thing or a bad thing?
Usually a bad thing.
A person with a checkered past might be seen as very unstable or not
predictable.
I see.
Well, speaking of checkers, do we have any books about how to win at checkers?
I'd like to improve my game.
We sure do.
I'll do a quick check.
Thanks.
